We basically did pay to see it! $9.99 i believe it was, for the first ever VHS video single. Famously banned by MTV, which led to her appearing on Nightline, a very serious ABC news show, to defend herself and explain her motivations...which she handled very well. She stood her ground, and unlike lesser artists of today, she never caved under the pressure and apologized for expressing herself.

This video came out in 1990! Banned on TV so she sold it as a VHS single and sold millions- she said in an interview she wanted to show that all kinds of sexual fantasies are okay, not just heterosexual sexuality. She really pissed a lot people off with this one, but she was all about pushing boundaries, and not caring what the establishment thought. This was ahead of its time….. the reason female singers( Britney, Christina, Lady Gaga, etc) can be openly sexual in their videos is because of Madonna. She paved the way for people to express themselves the way they want!

The video: In short, she went to a hotel room ☆rgy/👀 show, the other man is actually another woman, she didn't do s3x with the man, it was the camera angle and I believe that the dark dancing figure is to represent sin as she was very much labelled a sinner by the church back in those days for being too sexy and pushing boundaries. Looking back, while the song was played on radio, I don't feel it was played as much as her past hits. I think this charted the way it did, due to the sales of the single and video single. She just came off the huge hit Vogue and JML was part of her very first "Greatest Hits" Immaculate Collection. Lenny Kravitz was starting to get a lot of attention as well, so I'm sure it played part in it's commercial success. The song wasn't so much the problem as much as the video was though. But if anything, she helped Hip Hop become more mainstream.

Haha, this was fun :D This was an earth quake when it came out. MTV banned it, we ran out to buy the single on VHS (first time that happened to a single), after a while you could see it between 2 AM and 3 AM, haha :P It was different, it was fun and over the top sexy, nobody could do it but her. Then came Erotica... Books sold in silver packing and kept under the counter in the music store, music and video for Erotica too hot to handle for press and MTV. Again. Fun times! Then there was a Madonna backlash and she got SO much sh**, but she kept going like she always does. Human Nature from Bedtime Stories is a great one to see and listen to after Erotica (it had a lot of great songs on it, but was very underrated at the time).

The beat is from an early My Bloody Valentine song, later sampled by Public Enemy (1988), then Lenny Kravitz, who was dating Madonna at the time, got permission to use the beat and that male voice you hear in the background of the whole song? Yea, That's Lenny, he's got a producer credit. The song and the video are about sexual freedom. MTV banned the video back in 1990, it is tame by todays standards.
