Today we're playing a game with Tohaa vs Spiral Corps as an excuse to look into the idea that impetuous activations are effectively free orders. I may have slightly too strong opinions on this matter. Big thanks to Rob from Brisbane for the prompt that led to this game.

The Spirel list is pretty similar in configuration, that I have come to run (started Spiral late, so never had Tri-core be a good skill), and naturally gravittated towards two krigels with smoke, because they are really good. Three harises is my norm.

While I 100% agree Impetuous activations arent real orders, there's a useful discussion about how to best leverage Impetuous activations so that they're a net postive. For instance, I try to run Impetuous pairs of Smoke Waebands as - particularly in the early game - that allows me to reliably and meaningfully use Impetuous orders.

I'm a newer player, and I was thinking about branching out from MO. I was thinking about something with more hacking or smoke/camo stuff, but my LGS got a bunch of Tohaa and Spiral Corps stuff before they left the catalogue. Thoughts?

Tohaa are an awesome but complex faction. I'd say, go take a look at my Faction Focus for them and see if they appeal to you. They don't have hacking much per se but Pheroware is effectively their version of it and very powerful.

your "you could do it with ten impetuous activations but it's too much" inspired me. It's so silly and yet so terrifying, you're getting potentially 25 orders on a turn, with a bunch of pieces that really want to rush up. Ok so I have two responses to this: 1. "twenty five *orders*, aghh have you learned nothing from my rant" 2. "actually it's more like twenty-seven once you add the tactical awareness and lieutenant order. Also nice gorgos."

@@R0bertShepherd potentially 25! Because if you deploy correctly and are pretty lucky, you use impetuous orders for the same kind of move you would a regular so it's effectively an identical order. Realistically, even with the perfect table and the perfect deployment, it'll be pretty impossible to leverage all 10 impetuous orders to the max. You're lucky if you don't have to suppress any of the 10, let alone use them effectively. In my opinion it gets more valuable later in the game, when you're short on orders and suicide runs with a flamethrower are more desirable.
