Realy nice project. Thank you for shareing this video. My project is a infinity cube by 30cm. I use 4mm acryl glas, cause the 2mm bent while aplying the mirror foil. I use a ws2801 led stripe with 32 led per meter controlled by a raspberry pi 3. I split the signal for every side (6) and make sure every opposite side gets the same signal at the same direction and same start point. For my next one i think about your ground and power solution, thank you. That would make it a little easier for me. Cause i want it to look great and not too much wires to see.

well done man! looking to give this a go myself later on in the year, some questions if you dont mind. if you were to build this again what would you do different? the 3d printed plastic strips, how are the angles worked out dimensions etc? maybe you could point me in the right direction? Also how much did it cost to get those 3d printed(if you didn't use your own 3d printer). would there be any point making this out of glass or would that be an overkill?

hi. I dont think glass would be that much better, now it is pretty light. But if you have it and know how to shape it, why not :]. 3d print cost me around 5$ just for material, I have printer at work. I redesigned strips for more connecting surface, to make it stronger. I will make video soon. I would like to see version vith 144led /meter, but strips are soo expensive and power consumtion can be huge, maybe after I make and sell some regular dodecahedrons and make money :]

Led signal pads are directional. Signal is going 1,2,3,4... so I am splitting signal from end of one edge to start of two edges. For example led 8 is going to 9a, 10a, 11a... and 9b, 10b, 11b.... 9a and 9b have the same signal. So I just connect signal out pad from led 8 to signal in pad on leds 9a and 9b.

Hey, first of all a big thanks for documenting your process so we can try and do the same! I'm a little bit unsure about the wiring for the LED strips, I've read the other comments and looked at the schematic on google drive but I'm still not sure. My understanding is that for each vertex you split the data signal to both outgoing edges? Or is there something I'm missing? Thanks again!
@quadsquad3087
@quadsquad3087 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly, signal from controller data out it is going to 5 main strips data in pin and each strip is split in the middle to 2 ends. You can connect it many ways, this is symetric (all 5 strips are showing the same) and easy. For more control (for example 5 bar wide graphic equaliser) each main strip can be connected to the data out of the last one (all of them will be in series), then set up controller for example to matrix 5x80 leds and you can show different patterns

How did you decide on which wires continue in certain directions? Does it matter? This is the only part I am stuck on. I am building a similar device except mine is a rectangular prism. In some corners I have 3 strips meeting, but at the top I have 4 meeting. I am trying to figure out the configuration of wire connections. Love the video by the way! Very inspiring.

I don't understand (draw a picture). Led strips have data in and data out. You can split data from controller out to 5main strips data-in and you have 5strips in parallel showing the same pattern (my solution). Or you can connect main strips in series so it will be: controler data out -> in strip 1......out strip 1 -> in strip 2 .... out strip 2 -> in strip 3..... and select on controller that you have 5 segments with for example 80 leds, then each led has unique adress so you can do more complex animations

I have 252 leds (60led/m * 4,2m) and it consumes about 5A on solid color, at max brightness, I did not try all leds on white and at max brightness, that would be probably even more, I don't have power supply for that. Animations consume usually less (3A, not all leds are running at the same time). It is probably wise not to run 144led/m strip at full brightnes because of cooling, I think original from deeplightlabs had something like 3 battery packs capable of 15A each. Soldering is visible in video I left last panel open, soldered the cables and pop the panel shut :]

@@stevenragen4157 yes exactly, I wanted to use arduino, but it is easier to use premade controller if you want it to react to music. Controller = quick and easy. Arduino = more control, but more work.

Yours is looking rather milky compared to the other ones which are clearer. I think it's because of the material used. I found this thread on reddit: www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments/eguck8/dodecahedron_infinity_mirror/ He used premade mirrored acrylic and he also has clear mirrors so anyone wanting to do this better use that one. www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/cut_to_size_plastic/two_way_mirrored_acrylic/558

Thank you! It turns out the two-way mirror is the dirty little secret no one wants to talk about when building these. After trying to make my own, I know why they are always filmed so dark.
