There are several laws and legal principles in the UK that protect public debate: Defamation Act 2013: This act reformed libel laws to better protect freedom of expression. It introduced a “serious harm” threshold to discourage trivial claims and provided protections for those publishing material on matters of public interest. Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation (SLAPP) Bill: This bill aims to prevent the misuse of legal action to silence individuals or organizations engaging in public debate. It seeks to protect and promote the ability to participate in public debate and speak out on matters of public interest. Parliamentary Privilege: Article 9 of the Bill of Rights 1689 ensures that members of Parliament can debate issues freely without fear of legal repercussions. This principle is fundamental to the UK’s constitutional framework. These laws and principles collectively help ensure that public debate can occur freely and robustly, while balancing the need to protect individuals from unjust attacks on their reputation.
