Oh yeah, always save those Arbys sauces. Or if you can go in to say taco bell, buy a drink and just hang out for awhile - many of them keep the sauce packets out in the open. Obviously don't abuse it, but grab a few of them to take with you along with a couple napkins. The soda has sugar and calories and most are free refills, so if you're SUPER strapped it can at least give you something in your stomach technically.

This is one of my most favorite meals on earth when made correctly. My Dad, a retired Master Sergeant in the Marine Corps made this for breakfast on Sunday mornings when my Mom and Sisters went to Church. He would make it after we shoveled the driveway of snow so my Mom ahd Sisters could go to church. When they left, he made it and it was like a meal from heaven. Now that I'm 71 years old I don't eat it so much because of the sodium content but, that does not mean that I don't crave it. What a great vid. It really does take me back to the pleasant times when "if you love it, eat it".

Yeah when I was a kid should beef was a dollar for giant can that's 60 years ago. Now 8:00 to $12 for a tiny can that doesn't even enough for one person. So this was amazing. And for those who don't know how to make biscuits it's really easy and you can make a dozen biscuits which is flour water salt and lard (or butter if you want to be fancy) For about a dollar if you using latd. If you use and butter it's going to be more like $3 for 12 biscuits. You very much and I also love spam and I am positive that I would love this with really finely chopped spam. Great job brother.

When milk prices are too high, I often would use 1 can of evaporated milk and then refill that can 2-3 times with water and add that instead of the pricy gallon milk. The only issue is more recently evaporated milk also rose heavily in price, but once it settles down again it's cheaper and shelf stable. Plus if you have kids in the house that you would rather give your gallon milk to, this saves on you making a store trip.

SOS really is a classic! It's a guilty pleasure of mine, and I make it with hamburger. If I have it on hand I'll enrich it with a bit of heavy cream.

My dad was one of 9 kids. We had this for dinner often. The only difference in preparation was my mom would fry the chip d beef in shortening until it started to brown a bit. Then she made the roux in the pan with the dried beef. Delicious!!

Like you this is one of my favorite meals, Creamed Chipped beef on toast. We have been using Budig chipped beef for ever. Sometimes I get real adventurous and add about a half can of green peas just for some color. I do like the other versions also but since Chipped beef is my favorite I make it most of the time.It is also just as good left over if it was refrigerated and reheated. Thanks for you videos I always enjoy them and often get new ideas from them.

one of my poverty meals is a packet of instant mashed potatos, a packet of gravy and a can of mixed veggies. basically just mix it all together and it's like $3 or less for like 6 meals

I’m not even poor, but my father was a sailor, and he made this quite frequently as my mother was a busy inner-city teacher. Apparently very common dish that was served in the navy. So good!

We were poor growing up, and even though the dried beef was MUCH cheaper 20 years ago, my mom would still buy the buddig beef, bc she could get a pack for each person and still have saved enough to buy a dozen eggs (also much cheaper back then) to fry and put on top! SOS with a fried egg on top is still my favorite lazy dinner. My husband and I have it at least once a month.

My mother used to make this all the time when I was younger especially when my father's work was slow. She would also make something similar with canned Irish potatoes, carrots, and peas. Her stewed chicken was similar as well with peas and carrots.

I splurged a while back and bought the box of powdered white gravy mix. We hadn't tried it before but, it's pretty good, always needs more pepper. I haven't had to buy milk, since the prices are outrageous right now. Thanks for the video.

The dried beef for the original version always kept me from trying it. For a long while I made biscuits and gravy regularly, using a pound roll of cheap pork sausage. Real butter for the biscuits. I wasn’t REALLY trying for economy… Usually I dumped in all the milk at once.

I find that when there's chunks in the roux already (I usually start by frying some onions and maybe peppers in the fat before I add the flour) the lumps stick to the onion bits so I can dump all the milk in at once.

Not sure if Americans have this, but I've been purchasing 200g cans of PEK Chopped Pork for £1 a can and tastes really nice. Their main claim to fame is they don't use MSM (Mechanically Separated Meat)and is made of at lerast 90% pork. I gotta say, that stuff tastes amazing and I might try to use it with a more scaled down "cream chipped beep" recipe. Also. Does anyone know what an American Gallon and a Quart is in Metric measurements (ml/L)? I keep hearing these measurements and my European brain cannot compute this. Thanks.

Using the Buddig beef is genius. Not only is it less expensive but you don’t have to do any sort of soaking to get some of the salt out.
