In this episode we fished the Big Sur coast line with bass fishing gear. we tried jigs, drop shot, swimbaits, wacky rigs and all sorts of things but punching the kelp is what worked best! Sit back and enjoy this fun adventure, thanks guys!

This is exactly what I was looking for! I am going to the west coast trail in BC Canada in 2018 and this is exactly the kind of fishing I was thinking of doing. Thanks so much!

I spent time out at DLI in Monterey several years ago when I first joined the Army. It was a tough year being surrounded by all that water and not having any idea where/how to catch fish out there. If I ever go back I'll give this a try!

Nice catch. I would say the first is a Black and yellow rockfish or a grassy rockfish. Gophers are usually more pink and brown.

Where in morro do you fish from.
@willwailes9298
@willwailes9298 7 жыл бұрын
North T Pier, South T Pier, the pier by Giovanni's Fish Market, the dock between The Galley and Hofbrau, and Spooner's Cove in Montana de Oro.

Thanks, appreciate it brother. I go to morro quite often and want to learn to fish the ocean. What kind of rig and bait do you recommend.
@willwailes9298
@willwailes9298 7 жыл бұрын
No problem. I use shrimp on a high/low rig. Medium light rod. The shrimp comes off super easy, so I use size 12 treble hooks. North T Pier, by the forklift, you'll get bites immediately, but those fish are better at stealing bait. South T Pier has bigger fish when the bite is on, but can be incredibly slow at times. During the night, the pier just south of Giovani's is the best rockfish spot a boatless angler could dream of. Aside from the spot, the bait, and the rig, tide and water quality affect fishing too. High tide is good for pier fishing, because bigger fish come inshore to feed on bait, but the incoming tide can kick up a lot of plankton and other stuff that mucks up the water. Last tip would be to buy the shrimp at Albertsons, because the shrimp at Morro Bay Landing is $6/package. If you want to learn how to catch sharks, rays and other big game, look up Fisherman's Life and ask him. He's the expert on Bay area shark fishing. I don't have the right gear for that, so I know nothing about it, aside from that the big perch and smelt I catch are perfect bait for monster fish. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXO6mJWadreImpI

That first fish you brought up was indeed a gopher, they are black and yellow with some pink on them that can be seen towards the head. The other rockfish you brought up were a mix between mostly grass and kelp rockfish with the occasional olive or yellowtail rockfish because of the white spots along the dorsal. I wouldn't be surprised if you lost a lingcod or cabezon. I have seen huge 8-15 lb Socal grade calicos cruising the pier once in a while too! AND there are largemouth in the community pond, the bass in my profile picture is actually from El Estero...I was throwing a 5" big hammer and noticed how steep the bank was and started figure 8'ing along the entire section until I found a submerged tree and got nailed after the first figure 8 in that spot. I feel like smaller presentations or craws would work there because of the size of the bait I always see jumping around. They also plant trout there from time to time.

I used to fish off of the pier there at fisherman's wharf biggist Man-o-war I ever saw was there. that was back when cannery row was just a bunch of closed building with all the machines covered in pigeon droppings. we sat in school over at Fitch junior high on the former Fort Ord and watched them burn.. Steinbeck Theater burned down too.

You can also surf fish on Marina beach which is north a couple of miles basically half way around the bay. though i don't know if it is legal. used to be. but when the state took over, you couldn't camp or build bon fires anymore or fireworks on the the fourth, the whole town went down there to do that, you can't even take your dog to the beach. you should have seen Ca before 1986 when it became the people's democratic republic of california. glad I don't live there anymore
