Thank you for all this wonderful information! I just have a question about the pt's right to leave, if the pt has dementia and it is getting worse and trying to leave the hospital immediately, we already explained the risk of leaving to pt's decision maker or when pt oriented and had clear mind, should we let the pt leave, and not call the security, or should we keep the patient because pt does not have the ability to sign the leaving form, and notify pt's decision-maker?

Ethically speaking should people be ostracized for refusing a specific treatment (surgery, medications, vaccines) of their own free will? Please someone explain this to me. 😊

This is a topic that equips patients with a valuable skill in life. When you respect a person enough to let them know what they are involved in, they remember you and it. Telling others about risks, assessing their level of cognition, all of what is being said is on point. Good job, colleague. #NurseLove

I had a question, is it informed consent if I was coerced into having a medical procedure that I didn’t need but felt like I had to do because people close to me were telling me to get it and even taking me to the building to get it? I was even bribed with the promise of a material thing if I went through with the procedure, by the people that were pressuring me into this. So even though I signed for the procedure, is that still informed consent? And what next steps can I take if it isn’t informed consent?
@dimplemabingnay30052 жыл бұрын
Informed consent is voluntarily and not without any pressure or any outside influence.

Here’s a scenario which I think may be a grey area. I’m waiting to have a transurethral cystolitholapaxy and suspect that when I wake up a urinary catheter may have been put in place. Do I still have the right to remove consent for the catheter as it will be argued that I’m still under the affect of general anesthesia and therefore not necessary of clear mind?
@JayRoofingInc Жыл бұрын
Does informed consent apply also to medications that carry potentially high risks ?

So the one who is giving informed concent about operation is always doctor? Nurse can't?
@LevelUpRN Жыл бұрын
Correct--the provider is the one to explain the risks, benefits, and alternatives to the patient and answer any questions. The nurse may witness the informed consent, but cannot provide this information. --Meris

How can I refuse psychiatric treatment?
@LevelUpRN Жыл бұрын
As long as you have the capacity to consent and revoke consent, you would simply tell your nurse or provider that you do not wish to proceed with a given treatment or medication. The only exception to this would be when a patient does not have the ability to consent, such as being on a medical hold, psychiatric hold, court ordered treatment, etc. --Meris

Even if after a patient has signed agreeing to undergo a procedure, the patient can still refuse at the last minute, and we, as a nurse must uphold the patient’s decision.(patient’s autonomy)
