@timmyisme2215 күн бұрын
One good trip of essentials that you can store and partition into smaller containers makes it worth it. Soaps for both hand and dish/laundry, various paper products, and hygiene products are some of the easiest to see the use for and make up for the cost of the membership. Add on top of that the non-essentials such as occasional chickens or hot dog runs for a meal, or just a larger purchase that goes on sale. i live close so weekly hot dog and banana runs are a thing for me. Low cost meal and I get more bananas for cheap. That and the cheap gas that's good. Also not tied to single locations so if you're visiting somewhere that has one and decide to hit it up before heading back, you can.

I am single and have had a Costco membership for many years and never regretted it. Their gas prices are great and you can't beat the toilet paper and paper towel prices. They have a lot of great items and it's such a good membership. Take some time to walk around and discover all of the different things they offer. Plus make sure to review their monthly specials. You can save a ton of money. Hope it works out well for you!

My favorite bulk Costco prep is the big bag of peeled garlic. I pulse it up in the food processor with a little avocado oil and freeze the diced garlic in little portion sized cubes.
@lindatoews526511 күн бұрын
I do a similar idea, I pulse them down and add 3/4 of it to butter, mix thoroughly and place a heaping teaspoon on parchment paper, another parchment paper on top and freeze on a cookies sheet then I cut them up and place in a sealed container. Then it’s so easy to make garlic bread, just thaw slightly add more butter or for sauces. Then it’s so rest I put in a jar fill with a quality olive oil. Give it a stir and store in the fridge. So easy to add to soups & sauces.

I buy a couple of their cooked chickens ($7.99 CAD) and break them down into shredded chicken, drumsticks and wings. I was buying shredded chicken at the grocery store and price comparison by weight, for the same amount of shredded meat at the grocery store would have cost me $34CAD. I put the shredded chicken in a bag flat, and can break off what I need for meals since I use chicken a lot, and it’s already cooked. I can snack on it, add it to all sorts of other meals, make sandwiches, etc. Edit: forgot to say, I take the bones from everything and have a bone bag in the freezer that I throw in the crock pot to make my own bone broth from! =)

Crockpot for broth, why have I never thought about it, thank you stranger ❤
@Anggea13 күн бұрын
@ no prob!! Spreading the joy. If you Google or search in YT for crock pot bone broth, you’ll find recipes to have you set. I leave my bones in for a good 24hrs, but if you’re also going to throw in any veggie or herbs from a freezer off cut bag, add them later so the herbs don’t burn. And I do taste it during the process, to add any other spices or salt I may think it needs. If you let it reduce you’ll end up with more jelly like concentrate, if you don’t, more liquid. Oh, and I also let the fat solidify on top of it in the fridge before I freeze the final stuff, and then I have the fat to use in other cooking recipes to replace the butter. =) happy cooking!!!

I still use all the same things…they will just last longer. I cut 🍋 in 3 different ways…in half, in slices, & in wedges then freeze them on cookie sheets for an hour before putting them into freezer ziplocks. Then I can use for juicing, squeezing onto food, or in water/tea. ALSO…I discovered that zesting frozen lemon is SO fast and smooth compared to the resistance you get from fresh!

Cooked bacon lasts in the freezer for months! I love to cook bacon when I buy it on sale, so it's ready for me whenever I need it!
@tamb75878 күн бұрын
A couple years ago instead of just cooking the amount of bacon I wanted for one meal I started cooking a whole package whether it is a 1 lb pkg or a 2 lb pkg. I put it on a light weight aluminum cookie sheet with sides and bake all of it on 425 or 450 in the oven. When done I have another cookie sheet lined with paper towels. I drain the pans into my bacon grease saver , place the bacon on paper towels and blot excess grease. We eat what we want then put the rest into a zip lock baggie and keep in the fridge and take out what we want and either heat on the stove top in a pan or microwave for a few seconds. This saves on the mess and time of having to cook bacon every time we want it, and yes it crisps right up when heated. Won’t cook bacon any other way now, also it’s always ready for other recipes that call for it so I don’t have to make that mess every time. My in-laws came and I had to feed 13 people . Started cooking bacon weeks ahead of the visit, 7 lbs to be exact. Broke out my vacuum sealer and sealed up and froze the bacon along with 24 pieces of French toast for the visit. When the time came I just heated everything up in the oven only took about 6 minutes to heat and served.

One main thing I love using for bulk food prep is portion and freeze trays. There are some easy to handle ones out there, where you just spoon out the ingredient(s) into the parts of the tray, and some trays actually have those parts made specifically to match measurements. So you can freeze, say homemade chicken broth, into 1 cup portions. The ones I use have a little indention at the bottom of where you freeze them, so when the ingredient freezes, it embeds into it what the measurement is. Makes it easy to grab exactly what you need for recipes.
@IngaLam15 күн бұрын
this is a brilliant idea!! for garlic puree, lemon juice… lots of possibilities 👀
@BlackTigr15 күн бұрын
@IngaLam Yeah I use it for a *ton* of stuff. Mashed avocado, grated zucchini, leftover wine, fruit purees, sauces, excess homemade jams, etc. It's so great bcuz everything's already prepped, measured, and portioned out. So there's no annoying guesswork with figuring out how much to thaw, or trying to thaw a huge block of something when you only need a little. Just dump the blocks in and you've got a meal. Easy-peasy. Also great for those that buy quicksale stuff (stuff being sold at a discount bcuz it's about to go bad). Then you just freeze it, and it'll keep for way longer.

@@eemilee91 It keeps removing my comment. The portion and freeze trays I use are by S/T/A/R/F/R/I/T (but without the slashes). I use the 2tbsp and 1cup trays. The snap-on lid isn't airtight though. So don't try to freeze any liquids while the tray is on its side. Hopefully this comment actually stays.

Additional tip for bacon. We found we mostly used bacon chopped up. Now we throw bacon straight in the freezer in the original packaging. When we need it we pull it out of the freezer and cut off thin slices from the end (perpendicular to how it’s already sliced) and start browning it from frozen. No effort whatsoever. During hatch chili season we buy 5-6 packs of hatch bacon because they are soooo good.

BACON TIP: I cook the package in my air fryer (or: cookie sheet with wire rack in oven). Cook it through but not crisp, allow to cool and then freeze. Will crisp up in a hot pan or the microwave in 30 - 60 seconds. Costco Bacon Bits are shelf stable until open, but keep for quite a while in the fridge once opened. It's great to add a quick hit to any dishes (box mac and cheese, soup, egg bites) but note that its raw (or smoked, can't remember now) so you need to cook it through.

Thanks for your tips! I usually cook bacon in the oven, and can fit about 2 lb on 2 cookie sheets. Once cooked, I place slices on layers of paper towels to drain. After it is all cooled, I place in a ziploc bag ( loosely filled), then squeeze all the air out once they are frozen. I can just pull out a few slices for a salad or sandwich whenever I want it. Also, for English muffins, they are traditionally divided with a fork (rather than cutting with a knife or just pulling them apart with your fingers). To freeze meat, I use waxed paper as it freezes as well as parchment paper but is a bit cheaper.

Hi! I have been making my own honey lemon for years and I simply leave them in the fridge. The honey keeps the lemons preserved and you can even just keep refilling it with honey if the lemon taste is still there and if not, make a new batch. I keep mine though on multiple smaller jars so I can have varying degrees of fermentation. I add ginger slices as well for the spice. Reminder though to open them once in a while if you plan on storing them for long to release the gas produced in the fermentation.

If you have a slow cooker, cheaper meats work out best. The slow cooking breaks down the courser fibres. Thighs and wings seem to be cheaper per £$, but you are paying for the bones. A whole chicken is a good buy, if you know how to joint one (plenty of video's on how to do that). Generally though, I buy breast or boned thighs. A lot of people think thighs are tastier, but for me, the eveness of the breast (fussy eaters) make more financial sense. One tip I was given decades ago, was to throw all the leftover veg, after a meal, into a container in the freezer. Then once a week, month, whatever, turn it into a big pan of soup.

Don't choose the bulk option by default! Great storage tips! There are just two of us at our house and only one eats meat so getting creative with storage is a must! I also adore those mini cukes!Yum

Love these! I'm going to try the beef slices soon. I am in a single-person household that buys in bulk from Costco, too! Having vacuum freezer bags really helps. I buy the whole salmon fillet and portion them, vacuum seal them, and I have cost-effective, perfect salmon for a while. It works when you have the freezer space.

Costco has a frozen bag of Kirkland wild caught Alaska sockeye salmon portion size about 8 pieces .

I like getting the big logs of ground beef (10 lbs) it’s usually a bit leaner and a lot cheaper than the other options. I then divide it out into 1 lb portions and freeze it flat in ziplock bags. Super convenient and because it’s relatively thin it defrosts pretty quickly.

Great share, Inga! I’ve been going to Costco and contemplating the same issues as you. Sorry to hear about the setbacks you faced in putting this video together. Here’s to bigger and better things in 2025! 🥂 Happy New Year!

i don't live in the us and therefor don't have a costco anywhere near me, but this is still such a useful video. i can still use all the tips and tricks and apply it to any other store whenever i bulk-buy. thank you so much, inga! this is so helpful (and i would love more videos like this; of tips and tricks with grocery shopping and/or food in general)

This is actually so useful as I have a smaller appetite than a normal person would due to bad digestion so even when I buy a normal size vegetables or meat, it takes me a longer time to finish them. Will definitely try some of them out!

Insread of the brioche or the English muffins, we usually get this "artisan bread", which is ciabatta, I believe. So good and freezes really well, too.

You can vacuum a bag, by mostly closing it, then sucking the air out with a straw. It's not as effective as a vacuum machine, but it does get as more bacteria ladened out than just sealing. Use the same end of the straw for each bag.

You can also cook the bacon in a big batch then freeze the cooked bacon, it makes it easier to make quick meals when everything is already cooked and you just need to microwave it

I appreciated this video so much. Thanks for the links and the link to your favorites. I am trying to use the resealable bag link but only the 24ct ships to my location. I’ll find something else so you get the commission!

I'm just about to get a Costco membership. Just me here.. My main objective is protein powder, meats, vitamins and minerals, and some frozen foods.. Of course there's the food court rotisserie chicken..!! Then there are the snacks..!! Love the mixed nuts, peanuts, beef jerky, trail mix.. Great video though. I would love to see what other tips you have surrounding Costco hauls.. hehe These tips will definitely help with my stocking up on meat..! I'm about to try the carnivore diet soon.. (as best as I can..)
