First in my new series of air tool repair videos is this Ingersoll-Rand 2235TiMAX 1/2" impact wrench that has low power. Come along to learn how to tear it all down, diagnose the problem, order new parts and discover a whole new problem my customer didn't know about.

I have been rebuilding air impacts for 9 yrs. Always blows my mind how many never oil their impacts. Cylinders have to be honed, rotors rusted. Really sad after how much they pay for the tool

@CoyleTools
@CoyleTools Жыл бұрын
There aren't any "repair kits." If something is wrong with your impact, it needs to be diagnosed and the proper parts need to be replaced. Some companies sell tune up kits to replace some of the common parts that wear down over time. A Google search will list a long list of retailers you can buy the tune up kits from.

Hi, Martin. I have not worked on that model. My parts supplier doesn't have a listing for the part number you provided, but you can try contacting them to see if they can be any help. They are Power Tool Repair: powertoolrepair.com/. Good luck!

I have endplay on my inlet assembly, is that normal? I assumed if I the tightened nut should keep it in place with the clips, but the only thing keeping it in place is the clips on the side of the handle, I was told that this could lead to a leak in the future in the assembly
@CoyleTools
@CoyleTools 2 жыл бұрын
The nut doesn't hold the assembly in the body, the clips do. There's going to be some play in that because it floats in the handle. But it's not like it's a wear point, so I don't see how it could cause a leak. I could be wrong, but I've never seen it.

Great video. What's your set up? Where did you learn about air tools?
@CoyleTools
@CoyleTools 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Daniel! I'm still learning about air tools, and I still get confused. Just wait until you watch the upcoming video when I tried to fix an Ingersoll 231G impact. It wasn't pretty. And air hammers confuse me because the mehanism is mysterious. Most impacts and ratchets, however, are fairly simple and it's easy to see how they function. So when they break, finding the cause usually isn't too difficult. In the case of this particular video, a missing screw is so easy even I can fix it, but it was an excellent chance to do routine maintenance and discover the rusty motor. I found the most difficult part of any repair is figuring out how things come apart and go back together, and in the proper order. Before I was shooting repair videos, I had to replace the head on a Matco air ratchet. What could be complicated about that? Well, what I found after a few hours of scratching my head and swearing a lot, was the head assembly they shipped was for the heavy duty version of the ratchet, which contained an additional washer than the model I had. I put the washer where the schematic said it went, but nothing fit and I was losing my mind. When I realized this and looked at the correct schematic, it fell together perfectly. The easy jobs are sometimes the toughest. But I started by being curious and taking things apart while believing I'd be smart enough to figure it out as I went. There are surprisingly few resources for this stuff online, so hopefully these videos will help other people when they're banging their head against a wall.

I worked on construction tools for 8 years. I managed tool repair facilities for 30 years. You have a good basic knowledge of what you're doing, but you lost me when you cleaned the vanes. Never re-use vanes. Always replace bearings. For someone repairing their own tools, what you're doing is okay. In a professional shop, shortcuts are unacceptable. Parts should be submerged in solvent to ensure dirt and debris in the airports is flushed out.
@CoyleTools
@CoyleTools 14 күн бұрын
This is a pretty old video. And none of my repairs have ever come back. This particular impact is still in service in a professional environment. While I don't deny your points, saying "never" and "always" eliminates your ability to accommodate a job which may need a fast turn-around in the face of backordered parts or keeping costs down for parts that aren't worn or don't require replacement. You shouldn't always charge the customer for parts he may not need. If something is broken, it must be replaced. If it is too worn to work properly, it must be replaced. But replacing parts that still work fine and don't degrade the function of the tool isn't the most ethical way of conducting business. When you take your car to your mechanic for new brakes, do you want to pay for getting new lines and a master cylinder if they're not required when all you wanted was new pads and rotors?
