Thulin has always been my favorite Bergman actress. Especially for her haunting performances in The Magician, Winter LIght and Cries and Whispers.

Ingrid Thulin, hell of a gifted actress. This reminded me and almost made me cry.

They don't make faces like that anymore. And she was fearless: think of "Winter Light", "The Silence", "Cries and Whispers", Bolognini's "Agostino" and Visconti's "The Damned". Before Isabelle Huppert, there was Ingrid Thulin (genital mutilation scene included).

Yes, never thought of that before; the similarities of Ingrid and Isabelle. Appreciate them both as one the very best.

Sin duda mi actriz favorita del universo Bergman. Esa manera de transmitir solo con la mirada y los gestos es alucinante. Y su semblante, serio y recto pero bañado con una distante calidez me encanta, así como su sutil masculinidad. Genial actriz!

Thulin is by far the best of Bergman's leading actresses. Such intensity. Such an ominous sense of danger in her performances. Bibi Andersson and Gunnel Lindblom were both superb at what they did, but neither could match Thulin's ferocity. And I hate to badmouth anyone while complimenting others, but you can see that Liv Ullmann is rather weak tea compared to these other three. Bergman was clearly drawn to her quivering vulnerability, which does not age well (see, for example, Hour of the Wolf: Ullmann has no character to play, just panicked/forlorn expressions to display). The reason that Persona works is that Bibi Andersson does all the talking while Ullmann looks stricken. That's a good division of labor.

See, to me she looks frozen. Unsensual. However, I'm not drawn to mannish women, however glacially beautiful they are.
@giovanna722 Жыл бұрын
Wow, I don't know how you can miss Ullmann's smoldering depth in Persona. I hardly think a film director of Bergman's stature would create a two dimensional character in a central role of one of his most esteemed movies.
@someguy957 Жыл бұрын
@@giovanna722 No, I only meant that Bibi Andersson is really doing all the heavy lifting in Persona because she can. It's in Hour of the Wolf you can see the limits (relatively speaking) of Ullman's abilities compared to Andersson's. However, since I wrote the original comment, I've re-watched Scenes From a Marriage in which Ullman's (again, relative) passivity is put to devastatingly good use.
@lucretiaweil757 ай бұрын
@@giovanna722 Those were stereotypes mostly created by male directors (Garbo, Dietrich, Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Thulin, Tippi Hedren). Even if some of these women were lesbians or bisexuals, Thulin, in person, was very feminine, funny, down to earth, not tortured at all, with a great number of friends. In "Winter Light" she portrays wonderfully the drama of an ugly woman, uncorresponded in her love, with moving fragility.

I sometimes wonder if she was secretly the inspiration for Disney's Elsa (emotionally frigid, expressive hands, paired always with a flightier younger woman onscreen). Lol. Her character's younger sister in The Silence was also named Anna.
