He’s one of my favourite ever pianists to come out of the Chopin competition, but the first movt was just very underprepared. Full of wrong notes and memory issues, tbh dunno how he got through with the amount of inaccuracies but I’m glad he did his concerto was amazing

Everyone agrees. I think she slept with 2 of the judges, she had too many errors in first 2 stages, judges suddenly changed how to evaluate them, then suddenly changed again in last stage.

I hate to say it, but I suspect the judges got turned off by the non-musical aspects, like the tails and the facial expressions; the pianist is expected to be emotionally involved, but not emotionally ostentatious. When "let themselves go" emotionally, looking like they're in rapturous spiritual communion with the composer, it can seem impressive to less sophisticated audience members, but experienced pianists know that can be easily turned on and off, particularly the facial expressions and the "staring into the heavens" look, combining joy and sorrow, then nodding etc. Judges probably automatically deduct points for nodding, which pianists pretend is spontaneous, automatic, un-selfconscious. But it's a gesture asserting some kind of moral claim or status to yourself: signaling agreement and approval of the music's sentiment. In any case, all that projected seriousness, authority, and moral and spiritual sensitivity, coming off as a kind of priestly-aristocratic affectation--- an impression heightened by the suit making one think of Rubinstein or Paderewski. Nowadays most pianists lean toward unpretentious attire. I think an unwritten rule of competitions is that any communication not strictly through the piano itself is going to be docked (outfit, rhapsodic or entranced facial expressions, and worst of all, nodding and head shakes). Although Pollini takes things extremely far in terms of austerity in these matters, seeming almost soulless and machine-like, I think he is responding to over-romanticization of piano performance and concert pianists. He plays sort of like a surgeon performing an operation. I don't know if one need go that far, but that austerity in that direction is certainly appreciated by competition juries that will hate extra-musical histrionics, and any sign of pretension. Between the tails, the nodding and dreamy "communing with the spirits" (worst of all when you look like you can't control it, as if to advertise how caught up you are; everybody knows it *can* be controlled), they probably got turned off.

I don't feel that Mr. Wunder is purposely trying to put on some "facial theater" in order to "amplify" the music here. For me he is simply deeply involved in the music. I do know what you mean about over-the-top "facializing" and also "peacocking theatrics" which some pianists (who shall not be named) indulge in. As someone watching a pianist, I prefer that their physical presentation not get in the way of the music. But I don't feel that Mr. Wunder is doing anything other than playing the music with total sincerity. I don't find anything in his manner at the piano or in his facial expressions while playing to be objectionable. To the contrary, I feel his sincerity and his passion for the music. But no doubt responses to pianists differ from person to person, but I must admit that I'm impressed by Mr. Wunder's passionate performances of Chopin's music. It is certainly true, though, that some pianists are better heard than seen. Of course, camera closeups aren't always flattering to pianists--or anyone else. But I actually enjoy watching Mr. Wunder play. In fact, I just got done with watching his performance of the Chopin Bolero and loved it once again! In any case, as my cousin likes to say, "That's what makes horse races." Wishing you well and lots of musical enjoyment to come as time moves along.
