Thank you very much for bringing Ingrid Jonker's work into such sympathetic focus Michael, for honouring her and for exploring the complexity of segments of the Afrikaner history that stood against the rigours being imposed by the state at that time. Ingrid's work mining the rich beauty of the relatively young Afrikaans language stands strongly alongside the genius of the likes of Langenhoven, Louis Leipoldt, Jan F. E. Celliers et al. Simone must be very proud of her Mum, her courage and her spirit which lives on in her words for all of us. Your story brings to mind the struggles of conscience of my father, a deeply religious man and a 'diaken' in his church, in lengthy discourse ("redewisseling") with the likes of Profs. Albert Geyser, Beyers Naudé, Adrianus van Selms, Cas Labuschagne, Berend Gemser, leading to my father taking the momentous decision (for him) to leave the Hervormde Kerk. Prof Geyser is so often forgotten having been pretty much airbrushed out of history by the National Party in those 'sestiger' years, his courage and conviction unsung. Andries G. van Aarde, Pieter G.R. de Villiers and Johan Buitendag wrote an excellent paper here www.scielo.org.za/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0259-94222014000100077 - maybe a topic for a future Friday? Keep up the good work Michael - greatly appreciated by your audience!

Thanks Stef, Even as an Englishmen, it is easy to discover the beauty of the Afrikaans language in her words. I will have a look. Much appreciated, I am always looking for untold stories.

I do not see the story as a sad one... as perhaps one should.... but rather a happiness for freedom from hardships which I can understand. Thank you
