Like you, I’ve never owned an SKX. I opted for an Orient Ray 2 a couple of years ago and absolutely zero regrets with that decision. I don’t mind the 5KX models and I can appreciate that you can choose whatever floats your boat right out of the box, no modding required. However, I just have too many low- to mid-level watches in my box, so I’m not jumping on the bandwagon. It always cracks me up about how people talk about dive watches. I'll bet 95% of them have never even been in a swimming pool, let alone the ocean. Friends of mine wear 100 meter watches and use digital equipment when they go diving. And let's talk about the watch band fitting over the dive suit wrist!

Yah. The real divers all have dive computers. So at best a watch is a backup, but more often it's wrist candy if they are even wearing one. Amateur divers like myself will wear one diving, but it's more just to have it. I only really dive on vacation, usually somewhere nice and warm. So then it's on a professionally guided trip with a divemaster, and usually 40-60 feet. So I've always been more focused on my air pressure then on how long I've been down.

I have 2 SKX's (007/009) and really do not see this as the successor. A successor to me would have been a SKX in the color range as this 5 Sports but with hacking & handwinding and for the love of God: sapphire. Today my Heimdallr 6105 homage arrived and it has all that at half the price! And - surprise- no QC issues: solid bezel and perfectly aligned (in fact a running gag is that you can tell a real SKX from a homage one by the misaligned bezel on the real one). I am a huge Seiko junkie but even I can't close my eyes at some of the apparent cash grabs Seiko does. This feels more like a lateral move to me. It is no surprise that most of my new watches are all micro brands or Seiko homages! In fact the aforementioned Heimdallr sells a SKX homage that has all the specs the real SKX should have and that most modders upgrade their SKX to: hacking, sapphire and lumed bezel (and bonus: solid end looks + milled clasp!) I really think that people that already own a SKX, are not going to get this watered down 5 given the price and lack of heritage... My 2 cents anyway...

When this movement is kept above 50% wound, it will lose some seconds, it starts to gain when the mainspring tension falls below 50% wound. When worn a lot, the movement gains again. Seems the amplitude getting lower makes it tick faster, keeping it wound up well increases the amplitude and slows it down. At least on my bottlecap that's what I found after loggin the performance over months with keeping notes about when wound, position when not worn, when worn, etc. using the WatchCheck app.

I think the problem a lot of people have with these is more the idea of it as the replacement for the SKX rather then anything to do with the watch itself. Seiko has made plenty "dive style" seiko 5s before, and I don't remember as much of an outcry. That and the price they were debuting at was a bit high, but closer to $200 and under, and it's a great watch for what you are getting. As 100m is perfectly fine for your average person. Heck, I've gone diving with a 100m watch and it was fine. That said, there are still some who don't trust anything that isn't a "true" diver with an iso diver's rating. I don't agree with that, but I've talked to plenty.

This is something that I’ve looked around online for quite a bit, and you will find no shortage of people with SKXs with “half click” bezel problems. Apparently it is not too difficult a fix for people with some watch maintenance and modding experience, but I’m not brave enough to pry off the bezel myself and take a look. To anyone wondering if a Japan-made Seiko is worth it, unless you really want a kanji day wheel (which I think is actually really cool), you should save a few bucks and buy the overseas-made version instead, because the Japanese ones definitely do not have any superior quality control.

These watches have already been available for less than $170 in some cases. Soon they will settle under $200, on a more consistent basis, just as most Seiko 5s have traditionally. A very fair review. Definitely not an SKX Replacement. As you said, this falls inline with other modern Seiko 5 Sport Models. All the 5 Sport Models have pull-out crowns so no surprise here. Seiko needs t get there QC issues resolved. I have a SKX007 with a very misaligned chapter ring. Even worse, there are higher end Seikos with the same problem. I have been lucky with most of my Seiko’s. I can sure understand why so many have become cautious of purchasing them. Right now, it’s not worth the going price. So many better options for the $300-$350 range including Real Seiko Divers. The Made in Japan Models unfortunately have the same issues as the K1 Models. It’s total personal option if it’s worth the extra money. The only true replacement for the SKX is going to be another Seiko ISO Diver with 4:00 crown and Day/Date. The classic, iconic SKXs still widely available, cheaper than these Seiko 5 fashion watches by some margin. What has always been the great allure of the SKXs was being able to own a little bit of horological history at a very affordable price. The only possible appeal of these watches over the SKX is their 4r36 engine. However, the 7s26 is a very reliable, robust and comparatively accurate movement that will last for many years. If worn regularly, the lack of hand winding and hacking is not an issue. And for the average or smaller-wristed, the wonderful SKX013 just cannot be beaten!

But I've said in the past it's great if it's your primary watch. I actually have the same issue with the Kinetics. I wore one for the longest time, and still have it. But it's perpetually dead. Even if I wear it for a day (and put up with the double tick all day) it only builds charge for a few days. So again kinetics are great if it's your primary watch.

Hello, great video as usual sir, regarding the bezel problem, it really just sounds like one of the two bezel springs is probably flattened for a reason or another. So you get a full click for the spring that is bent as it should, and a half click for the spring that is flatter and as such can not really reach the bezel grooves. In other words, it is a very easy fix and it just requires poping the bezel off and bending the spring, or replacing it. The watch looks great, but i cant get over the lack of a screwdown crown on this case shape.
@RelativeTime5 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking, that one of them wasn't tall enough to stop the backplay let alone get the same tactile feel. So if I keep it, that will be my first fix. And If I'm taking the bezel off, I might as well mod it to a lumed one as well.

I love Seiko they are my favourite brand but i cant help but think they have shot them selves in the foot here. The QC at this price should be loads better in my opinion. Nice one Shane. The big problem I have with these, is I want a Grand Seiko. They are amazing watches. However the only way I can justify owning one, is if I don't lose thousands when I am ready to sell. I was hoping the whole point of discontinuing the SKX, and releasing this watch, was to bump the quality up a bit, and start shifting into a higher quality brand. Nope. How can I have any confidence that people will ever look at Grand Seiko for the incredible watches they are, when Seiko keeps putting their name on junk like this?

The only Seiko I ever had, was Seiko 5 about three decades ago, which was a cheap, low(er) quality nice looking watch. And nothing really changed. Except price, which is based on "old days" hype, when fiver was the only affordable automatic. On the other hand, are there considerably better alternatives in 350$ range? Not really, I think. As I don't like "pretending diver" design in general, I'll leave at that. There is Seiko, and there is Grand Seiko... and the gap is huge in every aspect! Good review -as always :-)

It's pretty clear this is Seiko making an attempt to capture some of the Fashion brand crowd. Despite what that watch community thinks of brands like DW, they are massive and they sell. I know sometimes it's hard for a watch enthusiast to accept something hasn't been brought out specifically for them, but I think Seiko should be applauded for taking on the fashion brands with these releases 👍

After all life is a gamble. The pot is set at high stakes, the cards remained revealed, the Dealer (Life) places the River (Last card) on the table, flips it and the sounds of sighs and chuckles fill the atmosphere. My hand beats them all with a pair of Duces (a par with 2's). I Reach for the chips and walk out immediately to cash in. Checked prices elsewhere and they are cheaper than most, a little higher then others, but don''t have to wait 10 days to 2 weeks for product. I have no inclination on buying the new 5's.
