I do karting, local tracks nothing special but, it's very important to understand grip, the limits of it and the overall feel of the car. The right line and knowing where you are in relation to the track and your opponents, it develops to a sixth sense.

It’s the same in a car, even though you can’t see exactly how your car is moving from the outside or exactly how wide you are you just know because you can feel it through every movement, you know your exact position in space and how much distance you have between you and the other drivers around you even though you can’t fully see how close you are to them. It’s as of the vehicle becomes an extension of yourself.

Every standard/official type of automotive racing requires you to understand either the track or your car better than your opponent to win (and most require both), speed comes into play obviously, but even in drag racing, if you don't know your car and the way it handles under extreme acceleration you either mess up and lose speed, or slam into a wall, so speed means not much unless you can handle it.
