Injured Wildebeest 2

This wildebeest injured itself during the Masai Mara crossing and limped straight into the pride of lions resting under the tree (you can barely see their heads). They tried to bring it down, lost interest and went back to rest under the tree but not before destroying it's hind legs. We came back an hour or so later and it was still next to the road and would no doubt become a meal soon.

They jump on top of each other whenever they are crossing the river during the great migration meanwhile zebras always cross in an orderly way even though they're all in the mix. My guess is this injury is self inflicted otherwise if it was a victim of a predator it would've been eaten it by now.

actually he'd die quicker if wild dogs caught him than if lions did. asphyxiation can take up to 20 mins to fully kill a big animal... wild dogs disembowel which looks a lot harsher but kills very quickly

Many of the comments here insinuate that I put this video up because I get some perverse pleasure in seeing animals suffer. On the contrary, I put it up only because it was the most dramatic thing that I witnessed on a week long safari. We knew that this guy was toast because he was limping heavily even before the lions attacked him and again, this is how nature works whether one likes it or not and we didn't fancy spending time in custody in a far-away land by breaking safari rules to put an end to it's misery. For me the more heart-rending scene was of a mother that had lost track of it's calf during the Mara crossing that was instinctively running back to the river trying to find it and then turning back to join it's herd again and again.

For those of you that think this wildebeest could have been treated by a vet then released in the wild. The wildebeest's right hind leg had a compound fracture and there is no way an injury that bad can be treated. If a vet were to "treat" it, it would have been humanely euthanized. Then because of the drugs used to euthanize it, the meat could not have been given to any predator, nor could the meat been used for human consumption. The best thing to do is to let nature take it's course and hopefully the wildebeest would be killed quickly by a predator.

You are right, but the best thing to do is to grab a boulder and smash its head, in order to put an end to its needless suffering. The lions would eat him anyway and he wouldn't suffer. Being weak there is a risk that they have not suffocated it before eating it. This could be done
