Reflecting back on the injury I received in my barn this time last year with my dairy cow and all that came with it. I hope it drives home the point that safety is key in all of your homesteading activities. Thank you so much for watching and be safe! xo

You are so so right. My husband grew up with his three brothers and dad working cows. They had a cow calf operation. And I can't tell you the stories of each of them getting hurt running cows in the chute. It's no joke. You must respect those animals at all times and even then sometimes things happen.

This is many years later .... but I've had my 100 lb dog hit me in the face with his head... knocked me literally on my butt and I saw STARS and blacked both my eyes!!! I can't imagine with a horse or cow at their size and strength.... Thank goodness you weren't "seriously" injured....

I had my horse swing his head unexpectedly on a ride and hit me in the jaw...broke a molar clean off...it wasn't his fault but being around the big animals can be scary at times! So glad it wasn't worse and that you are doing better!

Agreed! I was letting two horses out to pasture, and in their giddy excitement, the young Belgian slipped in the mud and flipped his head toward me, knocking me three feet backwards into the wood fence pole. it was so fast and so shocking. It could have been so much worse!

Thank you for sharing your injury. I was so embarrassed that I was injured by our 1200 pond horse that reared up behind me. One hoof came down on each shoulder, knocking me to the ground. I was just so embarrassed that when I came to and people came to see if I was okay, of course I said I was just fine! I didn't want to say my back was killing me or my neck and shoulders hurt so very much. 15 years later and my back is really screwed up. Then PTSD is bad. I can't have anyone come up behind me without screaming or slugging at them. Yah, I feel stupid and embarrassed that I am surprised by someone coming up behind me. It just scares me to death. 25 years ago I was a cashier and was robbed in the store by a rifle totting guy. I had PTSD from that, too. PTSD from the horse injury was SO much worse!! I can't explain it, but hearing you were embarrassed by your animal mishap made me feel "normal". Patara, thank you and you will be in my prayers. I need to go look for your video. Patty

I'm glad you went back to that event and investigated in your own head the why's and wherefore's and the what if's. It's important to realise, as you did, the implications of your actions. I hate that some might say, "It happened, nobody got killed, you're fine now, get over it, move on". I wonder if those with that type of attitude are more likely to injure or harm others unintentionally because they don't take the time to get over or move on from incidents either they or others around them have faced. The time to let it go and move on is for you to decide when you've learned all the lessons from the incident and don't let anybody tell you when that time is (unless it's seriously affecting your health, mental well-being and attitude, then I think it's time for therapy). All the best, Poo

About four years ago I was bottle feeding a baby calf, which I have done a lot of for years. When I was feeding him my husband was talking to me and I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. The calf hit the bottle like they do when nursing from their mom, well he hit the bottle it came up and hit me in the nose. All it did was give me a bloody nose ( Thank God), it will wake you up, and make you pay attention to what your doing. I even had a milk cow fall on me when I was milking her, so I understand what your talking about. I'm so glad your ok.

It is funny that after you get hurt on a homestead, you hear all the war stories from the old timers. Sad to say many times you hear the story second hand because it was fatal for the farmer. Glad to hear that you are keeping yourself and family as safe as possible. This lifestyle is truly a blessing, but also very dangerous. On a lighter note, the video of you milking the cow while singing Rocky Top had to be the best thing I have ever seen on KZbin. Keeping beat to the song with the squirts in the bucket was priceless. So stay safe so you can keep sharing what you do.

Your videos are so important to those who are thinking about homesteading (this includes myself) and those already in the swing of it. Its not just farm animals that can cause injury - I had a dog run full pelt into my shin bone and how I didn't sustain a broken leg is beyond me. The pain took my breath away and I couldn't speak. I was almost too scared to move in case my leg collapsed. The dog just wandered off as If nothing happened. I had a bruise that last for almost a year. I am so pleased you did not have a more serious injury and that you are alive!!!!!!

I'm glad you are ok. We have pigs and luckily none of us have been seriously injured but have had a couple of bruises. Not mean pigs, but like you said, they are heavy & solid animals. We do not go in the area with them unless someone is out there. Even my husband who is a really big guy. We also won't let friends do it either. You can pet them and they act like big dogs but they are still animals. Even a rooster at times can do damage to a child so as much as I love homesteading you absolutely have to keep your guard up. (Mine are nice but if someone starts chasing or swatting at them you can't expect them to just sit there) Thanks for sharing & keeping it real!

+Appalachia's Homestead --- We are home and adjusting to our new schedule and chore shift. His infection wasn't caused by anything on our farm (our animals are treated just like pets and their pens are very clean), but a sinus infection that didn't drain. He can't be to the barn or in public for 2 weeks so all his jobs have been shuffled around to the family. He is healing, we are doing what we can, but it's caused us to rethink our plan for this year.

I collided with one of my horses a few years ago . Her head ran into my face while she was trotting away from a hungry dominate mare that had a Colt. It happened while I throwing hay and had my mind else where. Always, always be alert around these animals and no day dreaming. That was my lesson. I had a black eye and cracked, swollen cheek bone. So yea, accidents happen with large animals on the farm. So my lesson was learned and the feeding method was changed. Thanks for sharing your accident, sadly these things happen. Love you Patara

I agree completely about how something, especially medically or injury related, can change the way you view or deal with things in the future. Over the last few years Its definitely happened within our family due to my sons health issues. I think the hardest part of those close calls is replaying it in your mind and knowing what could have happened. My dad & grandpa have shared several close call stories with us about the time in the past when their was multiple animals on their property (including a time that a horse took off with my toddler aged daddy on the back and was headed dead run into traffic!). My grandfather actually mentioned yesterday how at one point he had to get rid of a bull because of how it reacted to the kids. Things like that can happen anytime you work with animals and its easy to let your guard down when you get into a routine or a hurry with animals you are familiar with. The black eyes the day after (or even shortly after) a broken nose are such a shock when you look in the mirror for the first time post injury.

great video... most people don't think about this aspect of homesteading. I was injured by one of my goats when she got a little curious when i was working on a fence. She stuck her head through to get a better look and got spooked. She took off running and got me tangled up in the mess with the wheel barrow. A 150+ pound goat can do a lot of damage. Glad you are ok. Stay light on your feet and be aware of your surroundings!

When anyone begins to homestead lessons are always learned and many times the hard way. I had a cousin whose horse kicked her about 6 foot into a folding chair at the 4H barn after she slapped it on the rump for stealing another horses grain. Stuff happens but the important thing is when it does to look back on it and use it as a learning experience.

There were two serious injuries at my horse's boarding stable last week. A mare reared and came down on her owner's foot, and a half-Percheron gelding kicked his owner in the upper thigh (just missed the naughty bits). All it takes is a moment of inattention. great video seeing how your getting through this ordeal. and your definitely right about the knowledge and respect you need to have for any large animals. reminds me of a time when I was a kid. we had horses and I was walking one on a lead, out of know where he got spooked and took off running,, dragging me from one end of the pasture to the other. for some reason I had it in my mind that letting go of the lead was not the right thing to do. maybe a pride thing. after that I realized because of that one dumb thought I could have got hurt pretty bad.

I'm actually really glad that this video popped up because it's so crazy how many people talk about oh yeah I'll go out I'm just going to homestead and everything's going to be fine you know it's so easy and then like you said they go to milk a cow they get a hoof to the forehead or they get up 1600 lb of cow stepping on their foot or you know they end up there in the pasture during breeding season and bull catches them with a horn and throws them over the fence and impales their leg or something like that yeah they don't think farm animals can be as dangerous as they are. Because I had an incident this year 2022 from a goat and people are like a goat they should be easy to handle they are but when you get one or two that decide to get into a ruckus and you're in the middle well that changes the game a little bit I happen to be carrying hay and the submissive goat that is at the bottom of the pecking order was standing there patiently waiting the dominant doe decided she didn't like her standing there and came from around behind me where I did not realize she was.see right there what I just said I did not see her because Guess what that particular morning I was moving kind of quick I was trying to get the hay and I was not paying attention to where that lead doe was. So a little bit of info of how an animal's instincts are the dominant goat came flying around from behind me I mean she was in full stride come around mind you were in a 14 ft by 14 ft Barn or shelter that they stay in 14 ft is not that far to have to clear by the time the submissive goat saw her it was too late the dominant Doe hit her and her hindquarter which caused her to immediately alert forward going backwards is not a normal movement for horses goats cattle or pigs their initial instinct is to flee and bust forward with a burst of speed to get away guess who's knee was right in front of the goat that decided to flee my knee she hit me with that hard head mind you goats can ram the fire out of each other because they have a extra thick skull believe it or not most people highly recommend not using a gun on their skull because some of the calibers can't penetrate it when they try to process them. So she took off straight forward I happen to be standing there closing the gate to the barn she hit my right knee full speed all I heard was a really loud snap and had I not been holding on to the gate I'd have probably been on the ground now I'm not small by no means I'm a big girl I've got some weight on me I'm also about 5'6 and yeah I'm a big old girl but because that one little mishap I'm thankful that the way she hit me she deflected off and turned because had it been full course I'd probably be in a cast right now because she probably would have snapped my knee completely out of the joint working farms is a very very dangerous job there's no OSHA for that. When you take up livestock caring for livestock you're going to get hurt I don't care if you've been in the business 100 years you go talk to anybody who's run cattle for 20-30 years everyone's got a story to tell you of all the injuries you talk to even just the people who just ride horses for fun asking how many times they have been tossed off into a fence asking how many times have been thrown on the ground the horse freaked out spun their head around and cracked them in the head and left them laying on the ground even chickens they'll claw you they'll bite I've seen kids who mommy and daddy wouldn't watch them well enough and guess what they stuck their face down there at the chicken what most people don't realize is a chicken's eyesight is very good they can actually see their own reflection in your eye and sometimes they think it's an opponent and guess what there have been many children who got their eye pecked because they got too close to a chicken dumb yes but children will be children so can you imagine being in an shtf situation your kid just got packed in the eye with a dirty beak or hey you were just outside about to milk that cow and she's got a sore teat you latched onto it and she turned around and stuck a damn hoof right through your head and be mindful if she kicks hard enough she can break your neck well you're dead now. you can never ever exercising enough caution working a homestead I mean even gardening it can be something as mindless as somebody left a tool laying there go back and ask your grandparents how many kids they knew got impaled on a pitchfork because somebody left the Pitchfork in a bad area and they came around the corner and it jabbed them in the shoulder when I was working with horses I had that happen one of the kids took the Pitchfork left it in a corner and when I came around it yeah I got jabbed in the neck and in the shoulder luckily it didn't penetrate the skin had I been a little shorter it would have been my eye. Homesteads are dangerous but it's up to us to be wise enough to exercise that precaution nowhere the dominant doe is.does she seem irritated today and seem like she may just be in one of her modes that to heck with everybody are all the garden tools put away properly you know hey do I need to build a station that has you know a bar behind it to where I don't get kicked.

Although we don't have any animals, the content of your video was/is invaluable - accidents can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone and not maintaining a "safety first" attitude (not always easy to remember) at all times is dangerous, and ultimately disastrous to your family, those who depend on you, and the homestead's overall well-being as well. Thank you for making this video.

Almost got trampled by a bull about a year and a half ago while interning at a vet clinic. You really have to expect the unexpected or always keep your guard with animals. This is doubly important for animals that you don't know. I've also been kicked by quite a few cows and calves. It's a bit of an inherent danger of having animals, but you can take steps to mitigate it to an extent.

+Diane Broaddrick If I may ask, what triggered your asthma attack...do you know? My doctor describes me as a "brittle asthmatic"; so thankful that I've never had to go to the ER or be hospitalized for it. People do not understand how serious of a condition this is and they can judge a person based on appearances only. Yes, it does change how you look at things. I am sorry that you went through your ordeal and hope I never end up in that situation. Sounds like you are a pretty amazing person yourself!

+Kris Gangwer I had a respiratory infection ( I'm an RN, which makes me the worst patient!) had been at work all night ( in a hospital)!! When I got home it just happened so fast...I stayed conscious long enough to call my Mom! You want to something crazy...I had a hysterectomy 11 years ago & have near had asthma since!! No inhalers...nothing!! My Doctor could not believe it....

Diane Broaddrick Wow. I was a nurse aid for several years, but my asthma has ended that...In fact, due to some doctor negligence regarding my thyroid condition, my immune system has been severely crippled. I get everything now... can't hold a full or part time job, so I take things per diem. Usually last about 2 weeks to a month at a job before a bad respiratory infection puts me on medical leave. I am glad that your Mom was there for you that night. Like you, I was working 3-11 at the nursing home...There were 9 residents on quarantine. Even taking the precautions, I started having trouble. Within three days, I had an infection so bad it was disrupting my heart rhythms!

A foot note to my previous comment... 1 1/2 yrs after the pig attacked my leg I still get horrible burning pain in the area. Also when I put weight on that section of my leg it causes pain.

Ms. Patara...that is so strange as I just watched that video last night! Was so happy that you weren't injured further. Love your videos. I'm a city girl, but a country girl at heart. Need a permanently disabled Nurse to come help? lol My hubby's Aunt has the family homestead in upper state NY. Tons of cattle & she's in her late 70's & does 98% of the work herself.

+Appalachia's Homestead I reside in NJ but her daughter's & their family live just a bit off the land. Her son, who is a very BIG ,Tall man who is very strong does the heavy lifting but she's Very independent (runs in the family) & still does a majority of the work. I am binge watching your videos. What a great learning experience. Love when our family gets the chance to visit Lancaster,Pa. Found out somewhere in my ancestry, we Did have a homestead in Pa. (Where I'm originally from) Plenty of farms etc here in NJ. Visit them frequently since our children were little. The same farming community that 4 generations of my Hubby's side have visited. My dream is to visit around your area. Our children are older, one still a teen. Wherever we visit we always find a local farm & visit. Following you on all social media. Take care of yourself and your beautiful family. God Bless.

I’m getting this late so forgive me for being behind the eight ball! So where do I go to see your earlier posts regarding this accident? Have had several incidences with my horses that were totally up preventable but I wasn’t being stupid, just freaky accidents. So glad you’re OK. Nose looks pert, cute and normal!!!!!

Paying attention is definitely a biggie. Even smaller animals can cause you to injure yourself if you aren't paying attention to what is going on around you. I broke 2 toes when an unexpected strong storm blew in and I took off running to close up the chickens. I knew the dog was on the lead and that it was across the path, but I wasn't thinking that she might bolt to the house at the same time I was crossing over it. I would have regained my balance without falling had I not hit the cinder block with my foot.

Yep! Unless folks have been around animals they just don't know what can happen. Cows look cute and cuddly that is until a 850 lb cow steps on your foot. Cute and cuddly just don't work. Glad your ok now.

The tip of a 100 lb. hogs nose can life a steer panel gate in a second. The craziest things can happen so fast. You do have to think safety first.

1 1/2 yrs ago a 500 lb sow (a female pig, for those new to homesteading) out of the blue when I was bringing new straw for her barn up and attacked me (with my teen daughter looking from outside the pen) and grabbed my inner thigh in her mouth biting down. The pig was never aggresive in the prior months. This incident has changed how I do farm chores, especially "in" the pig pens. I now will not go into a pig pen unless somebody else is near, just in case. Also I take something like a hoe or pitchfork in to defend myself so I can get out as quickly as possible. Even excited livestock can cause severe injury that's forsure! Before somebody starts saying I some how deserved it, you need to be aware how gentle and caring we treat our hogs, even giving them back scratches and tummy rubs. They even have names lol

+Tracy Good That is exactly right! It can just come out of nowhere and having someone with you is so important! NO one here now is allowed to deal with personal contact or rotation without someone present. If you get hurt... who would help you otherwise? That's also why I carry my phone with me also. Thank you so much for your input! xoxo

My husband's grandfather died from the tractor turning over on him even though he was very experienced, muddy spot or something. Just like you a freak accident so to speak or something you hadn't expected. Strangely enough my husband told me his grandfather used a mule and plow to plow up the family garden. So animals aren't the only thing that can get you.

You got that traumatized by just getting a broken nose!! Jeez don't ever get a horse. I had my shoulder dislocated and reset it myself on the trail. You get hurt easily when dealing with half ton animals if you don't stay alert.
