Thank you for this helpful demonstration. The internal temperature of pressure cookers tops out at 250° F. Since I do not have a pressure cooker, I tried heating one end of a sheet over the gas burner of my stove (I'm sure it got much hotter than 250° F). That did the trick, and it wouldn't take more than a few minutes to heat an entire sheet that way, holding it with tongs to be safe. Next, I slid a flattened sheet into the oven at 350° F and let it cook with our dinner for an hour. It probably would take far less time for the ink to wipe easily off.

Sandpaper worked, but dulled the shine of the metal. Acetone and a scotch brite did not work. Boiling in a covered saucepan did not work. Bought a scratch and dent sale 4 quart pressure cooker just to try this idea. Happy! Happy! Happy! High heat boiled one Pepsi can and 5 pre-cut aluminum sheets of Coke, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, Sunkist and Fanta with 3 cups of water for 20 minutes. Used a $1 bottle of 100% acetone nail polish remover and a paper towel. Ink came right off with a gentle wipe for the most part, but a little more scrubbing was needed around the white stamped areas, especially on the Coke label. As easy as removing fingernail polish. Thanks a bunch for this tip!!

if you wanted to make large amounts of blank aluminium sheets at once, combining multiple sheets that need flattening in the pressure cooker in a stack under something heavy to flatten them as they pre-treat, then washing them all with acetone in a dish would work quite well

Does it have to be a pressure cooker, or can you use a regular covered pot?
@LeFreak3 жыл бұрын
Yes - it has to be a pressure cooker - the point is that the steam has to penetrated to first layer of lacquer that is sprayed on the soda can. As soon as there is some vapor in this layer the lacquer becomes susceptible for the solvent. The importance of steam can be seen sometimes when you try to remove the ink on the bottom of the soda can. This part of the soda can is standing in the pressure cooker in the water residue. Often the ink there is harder to remove than on the parts that are in the vapor phase.

Thank you for this video I want to ask, does acetone also remove the protective surface on the inner side of the aluminum, like where the drink touches? When I cut some piece of a can and make its very thin line touch on a circuit, it transfers the electric. But the cans’ inner wide surface doesn't do it. Should I just scratch them off? (I want to connect wires to their holes for a school project, and thin lines are hard to keep wires connected on. Does anybody know?)

Since my neighbor doesn't have a pressure cooker for me to use, I can tell you what DOES NOT WORK. Cooking in an oven at 450F for half an hour, then scrubbing with acetone, paint thinner, or muriatic acid. At this point, getting mad helps a little bit because I took out the blow torch, and that does work. However, (big however), the ink must be thoroughly blackened, but not whitened, which can happen in an instant. If it whitens, you've ruined it and can even set the aluminum on fire, à la Hindenburg so I don't recommend it. I gotta get a new neighbor, one who owns anything I might need to borrow.

FYI. Instant Pot is brand of an electric pressure cooker. It is very popular in many countries now because stovetop pressure cookers are inherently more dangerous. They have been known to explode or cause serious burn when not properly vented before opening. Newer devices, like the instant pot prevent accidental opening and has timer to turn off the unit. The stove top pressure cooker left on accidentally have caused major issues when left unattended.

As far as I know it's about heat. Pressure cookers can get up to 120 C so if you don't have access to one I'd say either an oven at that temp or a soak in boiling water for a few minutes. The acetone in nail polish remover is the cheapest option but if you can't heat the can at all you could try some other solvent like a toluene based paint thinner.

Does it have to be a steam cooker and is there a type of nail polish brands that may only work with this type of procedure cuz I’ve tried it and it’s not taking off
@LeFreak3 жыл бұрын
Yes - it has to be a pressure cooker - the point is that the steam has to penetrated to first layer of lacquer that is sprayed on the soda can. As soon as there is some vapor in this layer the lacquer becomes susceptible for the solvent. Concerning nail polish brand: This is not really a point but if available you can buy Acetone directly. You can try other things first with more success e.g. choose carefully the soda can, meaning that you take one where the surface of the can is not covered with to much color, a can where you think there is only ink and the ink is not covered with a separated transparent lacquer. Another option is to try also with a little bit of steel wool with acetone in the beginning. As soon as you have a little clean edge you can go on with only nail polish remover.

Do you think one of those steam cleaners would work? The ones for cleaning floors, tiles and grout e.t.c. Or are they not hot enough? Thanks
@LeFreak7 жыл бұрын
Hey Allan - nice fishThe theory is that the hot vapor penetrates the ink and then the ink gets susceptible for the solvent. Within a pressure cooker you do have a nice over pressure (1bar) that facilitates this process. I doubt that you can achieve an over pressure with a steam cleaner (but I have no experience with this device). I had also poor results by just cooking soda cans swimming in hot water. I don’t want to discourage you - just try - it takes 15 minutes (smile)

She's justified I suppose after I was melting lead in the kitchen a few years ago and water was inside a bit of scrap lead I put in the pot, couple of seconds later and a loud pop, the water turned to steam very quickly causing a minor explosion, luckily none of the lead hit me but the kitchen took a major hit lol, Thankyou

1) Make sure the setting on your pressure cooker is around 1 atmosphere (bar) (15 psi). Some pressure cookers have a 1/2 bar setting, which is not hot enough. 2) Try a different can. The Pepsi Max might have a different type of ink. 3) Try a different brand of nail polish remover. It should have a high concentration of acetone.

about the pressure cooker: read the instructions! If you don't, you will just be boiling the cans at 212 °F, 100°C. After you have put on and tightened the lid, boil for 20 minutes. Then you have to do a special procedure to prevent egress of any steam for awhile; now the water is boiling at a considerably higher temperature. Re: acetone vs nail polish remover, agree with above comments about dismal quality of nail polish remover. I live in the USA; buy acetone at hardware store or pharmacy/drug store. If the latter, just check the label.

Green Scotch Brite pad will take off the paint, but leave scratches. Successively finer sandpaper gits (up to 3000) will polish those scratches, then use a buffing pad on a drill with polishing compound to restore the shine. Takes about 10-15 minutes per can.

You are not allowed to place any closed Container in a Pressure cooker ( See Manual of pressure cooker)
@mike_van_in6 жыл бұрын
An unopened soda can will rupture inside the pressure cooker. The can will rupture when the internal pressure reaches around 90 psi - which will happen very rapidly when the steam inside the pot is at 15 psi. Cans are so accurately manufactured that the can wall and the engraved tab will fail at around the same pressure. The cooker pot is typically built with a safety factor of around 20. This means that a pot with a relief valve designed to vent at a max of 15 psi will safely contain a pressure of up to around 300 psi before it deforms catastrophically - but the safety plug *will* blow out some time before then - and your kitchen will literally be instantly spray-painted with super-heated, liquid sugar. The increased pressure inside the pot raises the boiling point by 20% - so the contents are much hotter than conventional boiling.

..... hey you made me reading the entire instruction manual of my pressure cooker (smile). It is an ordinary pressure cooker called Duromatic from Kuhn Rikon (a Swiss Brand). So you cannot adjust or measure pressure. Since I always use this pressure cooker also for autoclaving my media to cultivate mushroom mycelia I thought that I am applying 1bar for 21minutes (sterilizing conditions as per USP). But when reading the instruction manual I learned that the first ring is indicating 0.4 bar and the second ring 0.8bar. In case the safety valve is releasing vapor the pressure is around 1.2bars. Since I usually use the second ring and I never heard that the safety valve opened I think I can say that the pressure is between 0.8 and 1.2bar for 20 minutes - hope this helps - and please share your own results

Not because I cook for the family (I guess that is what you expected) - but I do sterilize a lot grain spawn for my mushroom culture in the pressure cooker. However, today I do also cook (smile)

What about using a very hot dishwasher mode?. In Europe many households don't have one.
@xenaguy014 жыл бұрын
No good. Temperature must reach about 120 C (or 250 F) to weaken the ink bond.

great info.. don't have a pressure cooker. I like the idea cause you can not rub it completely off, it looks like you can have a tint of color to can. :) thanks for video showing it.

You know as a former scientist I was sitting at my desk and was thinking how to remove the ink from soda cans and then I had this idea ……......... no it is not true (smile). The effect was discovered by chance like most any other invention in the world and that’s how it happened: During my spare time, I try to grow mushroom indoors (only edible ones). Rye is a common substrate that you need to cultivate mushroom mycelia. In order to avoid that other bacteria are overgrowing the rye, you have to sterilize it. Since I do not work at a laboratory anymore where I could use an autoclave, I was forced to use the pressure cooker in my kitchen. At that time, I did not want to spend money on jars so I thought why not put the rye in soda cans because they have some advantages. You get them for free, they withstand the head and the pressure and they do also easily transfer the head to the inside. So I took away the top of the soda can, put rye inside closed the top with cotton pads and then sterilized the combination in the pressure cooker. Everything went well until I brought them into my self-made flow bench (laminar flow hood where you can work aseptically). If you want to bring something inside a flow bench you want to make a surface sterilization first. That’s done with a sort of wipe down procedure with a sterilizing agent. So I sprayed the soda can with Ethanol after the pressure cooker and the hole ink dissolved into my lovely flow bench………...

@@LeFreak please could you explain what the mechanism here? Is the heat boiling off some type of coating?
@LeFreak2 жыл бұрын
@@BozAwesome The steam is somehow penetrating the coating, then the coating gets susceptible for the solvent acetone

@@LeFreak well i tried boiling covered for 20 minutes and couldnt get it to work. So the pressure must play an important roll

Its acetone (nail polish remover) different from alcohols Btw I rubbed cologne on cans without heating them but it didn't work. I'm curious if there's a way without heating

Do they have to be cracked or can the liquid still be inside
@LeFreak5 жыл бұрын
Never put closed containers in a pressure cooker!!!!! It can be very very very dangerous!!!!!! The container can explode inside the pressure cooker!!!!!!So: 1) open the can 2) drink the liquid 3) place the empty can in the pressure cooker.... or in other word, just follow the instruction of your pressure cooker.saludos cordialesMichael

Can we still cook in that pressure cooker after this trick?
@LeFreak3 жыл бұрын
I use the same pressure cooker since years for food and to treat soda cans. I place my soda cans an a piece of aluminum foil so no ink will be on the bottom. When I want to use it again for food I clean the cooker with a scotch bright sponge - that's all

Hi, what happens if you don't have pressure cooker?
@LeFreak4 жыл бұрын
I have nothing to offer for that situation - I tried just placing the aluminum sheets in a bag wrapped in acetone soaked paper for one week -> nothing happened. Also commercially available paint remover did not work. Maybe you take the soda can apart - flatten it with an iron (see my other video) and then you use only the inside where there is no paint - sorry
