The Nepali Sarangi (Nepali: नेपाली सारङ्गी) is a Nepali folk instrument. It is a chordophone played by bowing. Traditionally in Nepal, the Sarangi was only played by people of Gandarbha or Gaine caste (both contested and interchangeable terms), who sing narrative tales and folk song, however, in present days, its popularity extends beyond the Gandharba community and is widely used and played by other caste members as well. It has also garnered much interest in other music genres, such as Nepali rock and film music. While the Sarangi has become the quintessential Gandharba instrument, while its counterpart, the arbajo, which is a plucked lute, has fallen into obscurity.

My grandma would always talk about "gainey" who would walk thousand miles and go to nepali villages all over India to give the news that's happening in Nepal be it a simple fight between husband and wife or be it turmoil in the country or the torture to the people or be it some good news ❤️ they were like news giver ( musical messengers ) in olden times when radio or net had no existence this is our rich nepali culture !! but we hardly see "gaineys" nowadays this brought so much of joy to me and I know this is the very reason why ur grandma cried that's the tear of joy and those childhood memories ❤️ So so beautiful and nothing can give a nepali feeling then madal and sarangi ❤️
