Just found your channel after downloading Inkscape and needing to quickly get through the noise to the essentials. Just watched another of your videos and found this one - haven't tried working in vector graphics in over a decade and need a refresher badly. Also, I have to figure out how to import hand-drawn stuff and trace it in Inkscape to make it cleaner and scalable, but first things first: This video. Looking forward to it!

Thank you, @@IronEchoDesign - I just found one of your videos that's focused on Trace Bitmap and it answered some of my questions, at least the theoretical ones. I've been cramming my brain full of tutorial videos but need to actually *make* something. If I understand correctly, once I've traced and have a vector, i can use the paths and/or the bezier pen to tweak the resulting image? For example, I have a tree I drew in either FireAlpaca or Sketchbook, and the trunk is definitely too short. I can stretch it vertically after doing trace bitmap, but I am guessing I can just *alter* the trunk. The other thing I'm wondering about may betray a fundamental lack of understanding on my part: Is there a symmetry button or mode for drawing new stuff in vector? It's fine if there isn't; I can do horizontal symmetry in my other programs, but it would be really nice if I could find a symmetry mode for actually drawing and improve workflow. To avoid getting overwhelmed , I searched a little bit and didn't find anything and stopped looking, but I often find that the terms I use aren't the terms that graphics programs use for the same operations and functions. Anyway, thank you for responding and for all your content!

Hi again. Love this all over quick tour of inkscape. You mentioned any other things that are worthwhile for the help file. When doing gradients and copying them or text with gradients... the scaling tool (at 20:42) the 3rd option. (Move gradients in fill and stroke along with the object) it helps to keep the gradient from shifting to plain colors when you move a duplicate or the original from it's place. (same with the 4th option for patterns) I got frustrated when making filled text with gradient then moving it into a position only for the gradient to be gone or not what I'd made. So this was something I learned too! Thank you for the videos. I always learn new stuff when I visit. (I was having problems with my circle text... Fixed! just by re watching this video) You are a great teacher. There's always something new and exciting to do in inkscape! Cheers

Paint Bucket Tool tutorial- I’ll upload it around Halloween because it’s scares me. Kidding, kidding. I need to do a video on Paint Bucket. It really is useful, but seriously it’s hard to repeat the same actions which can be frustrating. I found out why- it’s performance takes into account zoom level and makes a raster image of the screen to perform its action. That’s why it can be imprecise. I’ll give it a shot though.

Old CAD-guy here, who's a "slave" to modern crazy-high Subscription Models of big-time CAD programs. Well...ActCAD is REALLY inexpensive, and looks a lot(!) like the "CAD-monster" (AutoCAD). That's what's driving my dilemma, cause...how can ActCAD actually compete in operation?? Its the $$$-for LOTS of small-time Architectureal Designers!! Your someday opinion WILL sure be appreciated! Hi Thank you for the video! May I ask, what kid of computer system do you use to design graphics. My computer is the older Mac mini, and It's life span is cycling down, so that means I'll be in the market for another one. Would you like to shine a light on any particular computer systems that you believe are beneficial for graphic designers?

Best question of the day! I'm in the market for a new computer too. I'm currently using a 3 year old HP Envy PC. It's not really built for graphics or video editing, so I'd only recommend it for the reasonable price point. Anyone reading this have a machine they really like? When I do upgrade, I'm going to consider looking at gaming computers because of their graphics capabilities and memory. Wish I had a better recommendation!

one last thing and so sorry to keep talking, I'm eventually going to watch every single video but for right now, I'm trying to take a silhouette of a camper and pretty much slice and weld images into it (kind of mandala like but not) but similar to the coloring book look. The mandala video is too advanced and is what lead me here and I'm pretty sure the coloring book will be the same and I need to get more basic first. Where should I start for that? This is introducing the features which is great but I'm one of those who needs to actually do it and follow along and I'm pretty familiar with the basics from Design space. Any suggestions on any of your videos?

@@IronEchoDesign Rick, I have tried doing a number of the tutorials and have found that the watercolor effect is a bit tempermental unless I am doing something wrong. it goes really funky. Tried the Dubai tutorial but did not come out like ours due to the watercolor effect, any advice? One other question, am I allowed to use the tutorial for wall art that you have taught for insipiration for my pod venture? Thanks.

For sure. One easy way is to open the image with the Photos App in Windows 10. Click the 3 dots in center top menu and choose Resize in the dropdown. Are you on Windows?

You are my go-to for anything inkscape... But I don't see how to delete old templates I've put together.. I have many I'll never use again.. I can't find them in any file folder in the program itself. Nor do I see an option in the program when it is running...

Thanks! I like clearing out my old templates too. Go to Edit- Preferences. Click on System on the sidebar of the pop up. Look for the User templates choice midway down. Click on the Open icon. You'll see a folder pop up with all your user templates. Delete the ones you don't need anymore. Hope this helps!

I am totally new to Inkscape let alone Vectors and everything this wonderful program can achieve. Your tutorials are fantastic. Clear to understand and so informative. I am slowly building up a simple understanading of what this program can achieve. Congratulations on your wonderful and clear videos. Thank you so much. My reason for downloading and using Inkscape is to create SVG's to use in Cricut projects. I want to take a photo of a long coated dog and create a simplified SVG design. Is this something you could do a tutorial on or is it too simple a project for your audience. Thank you once again. 😄

what needs to be done in this case is known as "tracing a bitmap" where bitmap is any photo file (jpg, png etc) and tracing is the conversion of said bitmap to vectors by the editing program, Inkscape here. there are tutorials by Rick and many other graphic designers out there sharing their knowledge on Inkscape which you'll find helpful.

CONGRATS on a great video. It's easy to follow and is most informative. I am migrating over from Photoshop and can't find how to do a perspective distortion on a bitmap to square the picture up. Can you plz help?
@IronEchoDesign
@IronEchoDesign Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I made the same move from Photoshop years back and still miss being able to do perspective distortion so easily. The nature of Inkscape being vector-based software doesn't allow this task to be done thr same way. There is a Path Effect that does perspective but I believe it only works on objects or groups of vector objects. If anyone reading this knows a good solution, could you chime in?

@IronEchoDesign

Thats going to be a transparency issue. Can you open the Fill and Stroke Menu? Object- Fill and Stroke. Look on the Fill tab to see if it's on the X (No fill). If it actually on a color, look down at the bottom slider and check to see if opacity is set to 0%. Move it to 100 and pick a color and you should see the circle show up. Does this fix it?

Outstandkng question. The Path Effects only work on Paths. You can convert the imported PNG file to a vector and then they will work. The Trace Bitmap videos I have on this channel show some examples of how to do it. (Coloring book video I just posted or the astronaut thumbnail one).

My Inkscape opens directly into the software, there is no "Quick Setup" menu as referenced in this tutorial. Whenever I attempt to create a new document the software instead opens a new window. When I attempt to open a New Template and choose a4 the screen is covered in grid points and text saying "page 4 Flap outer, page 5 back cover, page 1 front cover, 98 mm for Flap outer...etc." My question is, how do I create a new a4 document so that I can follow along with this tutorial?

For sure. Go to File- Export and you'll see the Export menu open up. You can choose at the top between exporting whatever is on the Page or whatever you have selected (Selection tab). Beneath that you'll see the DPI setting. Change that to 300dpi, and at the bottom, just above the Export button, you can choose what folder you're sending the export to and toggle between PNG, SVG and JPEG and others. Let me know if more info is needed.

How do I get Inkscape to open with the proper screen size each time I use it? Now, I must expand the size every time. Background: I've installed the latest Inscape on my Apple iMac desktop and gone through your video (FANTASTIC VIDEO and Channel!) but the the program opens each time in a weird wide and short inteface rather than filling my desktop screen as desired, as saved in my recent projects. So, each time I open the app it must manually be dragged out into the proper size "real estate" I need. How can I get it to open full size every time? THANK YOU very much!

Thanks so much!! I know exactly what you mean. I get the wide flat Inkscape sizing on opening too. The advice I got was to clear cache - which worked temporarily- but the bug returns. I noticed the issue for me started exclusively when I upgraded to Inkscape 1.3. Hopefully there is a fix out there. Maybe someone reading this has a solution they can share?

MAYBE I just found a solution (not a cause, but a possible fix)... Moments ago I completely removed and or uninstalled everything "inkscape" so I could then reinstall version 1.3. In the process, I found OLD INKSCAPE FILES from 2015 and 2017! Perhaps there was a remaining conflicting preferences or user interface file? Anyway, the clean reinstalled Inscape 1.3 appears to open as it should now. Apparently I had forgotten the download/trial of 5 years ago. I guess I had a lot going on at the time (explanation... or excuse? Ha)@@IronEchoDesign
