You have a real skill for clarity and pacing. I have used Adobe Creative Cloud for years but don't want to pay hundreds a year to rent software. Yet I could not get my head around Inkscape. Just went thru the video on a 39deg morning in Florida. Got thru most of the stuff with a bunch of start stop rewinds as I duplicated the work. On the text to page once i had my cutout circle I just selected the existing "donut" and text to path to it and flipped and slid it around. Was easier than drawing another circle and guessing the size.

Thanks, this was brilliant, and resolved some of the frustrations I was having as a first day user! BUT my one remaining burning question is... can you change entire document size (along with contents/layers)? e.g. you've set document to 3000px square, drawn on it and you later want to size it all down. AND can you (should you, how do you) flatter layers into a composite image. I've not managed to find that.

Happy to help! Couple of quick things to check that might solve it. Make sure the rectangle is selected and on the Fill and Stroke Menu, you want to be on Fill. Sometimes people are on the Stroke section and click on Linear gradient, but then the gradient bar shows up and pencil edits seem to do nothing. The other thing to check is that the opacity slider isn't all the way to transparency. Do either of these help?

Quick question: @ 16:09 when I drag the tip it spins the whole star, although can move it all other ways, and the inner node bends, but not the outer, any ideas? - Btw, Thanks so much for this excellent tutorial, as everyone else has said, it really is the best out there.
@IronEchoDesign2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! Just logged in to try the see about the star nodes. I see what you mean- inner node can bend/twist the whole inner shape, and the outer node spins or resizes. Playing around, if you hold shift and move the outer node right or left it produces a Kaleidescape type mirrored effect on each star point. There may be a way to modify the code to tell the outer node to do what the inner node does, but that's over my head for now. Always learning and if someone knows, please share!

My screen is fairly different from yours. They could have changed the user interface since you built this video. Some items just don't work the way you demo them. For example for the pentagon/star tool. When you select it from the left toolbox, it shows up at the top left, as one icon. I get 2 icons - a pentagon and a star. When I click the star I can create a star on the document. When I click the pentagon, I can not create a pentagon. It stays as a star. I logged off and on to Inkscape, still did not work. On another topic, did you have a fee course you offer on Inkscape?
@IronEchoDesign2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and you're right about the interface changing. Some of the Tools have been moved from the side toolbar completely. Also, the new default view has a menu on the far left. Click on View and at the bottom of the dropsown menu, switch to Custom. That will put the left tool bar on top like you see in the video. For the Pentagon/ Star...on the modification bar where you see Corners, Rounded, Randomized... Click on the little BestBuy-looking arrow with an X in it. That will restore the default for the tool and you should see the difference between star and pentagon. Hope this helps! I'm looking into making a full course. Probably will put up a free update to this video first to clean up the changes.
@ldsouya32 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Changing to Custom on the View dropdown, helped. The right tool bar is now on the top. I still have a problem with the pentagon/star tool. When I click on that I do get 2 icons on the top left. However the mouse pointer stays the same - a star, regardless of whether I click on the star or pentagon icon. Worse yet, It does not create anything, regardless of the number of corners I select 7, 8, etc. It always creates a dotted square, with no star or pentagon image. It is working when I select the circle tool. It creates circles on the document. But when I select the pentagon/star tool, it just draws a dotted line square. Any help you can give? Thanks, @@IronEchoDesign
@IronEchoDesign2 жыл бұрын
Okay, dotted line square means something is transparent. Can you check the Fill and Stroke menu to see if a fill is selected and not white. If so, look at the bottom opacity slider and make sure its not on transparent. Can you let me know if that works?

In the meantime, you could try one of the built in templates on the Print tab of the Inkscape Welcome Screen. Something that is set to landscape in the size you want. It's at least a starting point.

I've been trying to follow along with you but on my version (1.1) I am unable to find the top two toolbars that you show on your screen.

Some of the defaults and tools in Inkscape have changed since I filmed this. If one of the toolbars is missing or you see it over on the right, go to View in the very top menu, and in the dropdown that appears look towards the bottom. You'll see choices of Default, Custom, and Wide. Click Custom and that should put the toolbars like I have in this video. Hope this helps!

Hi thank you. I don’t have Inkscape but I’m going to download it now. How about resizing a picture?
@IronEchoDesign Жыл бұрын
Great! Enjoy Inkscape! One way to resize a picture before bringing it into Inkscape (to keep the file size smaller for Trace Bitmap for example.) Is to open with the Photos program in Windows if you have it. Click the three dots in the top menu. And in the dropdown, choose Resize image. Then when you bring it into Inkscape it will make things flow easier.

Great question. Some of the tool bars and tools have changed since this video was filmed. The mirror symmetry function is now found in Path Effects if that is one of the missing tools you’re looking for. I actually updated this whole video about 6 months ago if you want to check it out here kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXTEioCiqsyEr8U

Thanks for the video, i am new and i don't think that i want to spend much time on this app, so im just looking for quick and direct videos toward the main functions that i need. the bucket was very interesting for me, espcialy when i was thinking that i must use path function to extract some shapes. - can you tell me, the bucket is the same / similar to the photoshop tool, color select (if i am not mistaken)? or maybe there are better ways and functions to to the same. maybe path. - also, it would be nice if i could see different relation between different parts, like the sortng rectangle/masks/etc in photoshop, which is normally on the right hand side of the screen, does inkscape have the same feature ??? - also, when i use some guide, to create a patern for my writting (like the circle that you have used to bend the words in circular shape, for the logo) and then i no longer need the initial patern/guide, how can i delete it witout effecting my text ? is the grouping remove the relation between my text and guide/patern ? - how can i see different relation betweeen parts? i mean if i have so many shapes and paterns and then i forget which one ive used to like a text or ... how can i find out about the relation, wihout modifying everything one by one? i am new, so don't laugh so hard :D also, too exhusted, sory for the typos, my eyes are too tired to read it back, but im sure you can get the gest.

Thanks so much! Great questions too. I came over to Inkscape from Photoshop and it took a few years to get used to the differences. If I had a current version of Photoshop, that would be a cool video to make comparing the two. The biggest difference is one is raster and the other is vector. Paint Bucket is a good example of this. It is similar to the color select features of Photoshop, but it creates a new vector object rather than select pixels. As for the bending text..Thanks for pointing this out! I should have mentioned that once you have the text curved the way you like it- with the text selected go to the top menu and choose Path- Object to Path. This will lock in the curve and make it independent of the guide circle. Thanks, and hope this helps!

@@IronEchoDesign Thanks alot for the answers. if I may, i want to as an other , unrelated question, I was hoping to extract path and vectors of an image for my Freecad modeling, but when iused the source png file, it can not extract such information, by using object to path. but if write a text by myself on the same image, then i can use object to path command to extract the vector/point line geometry for §d modeling in Freecad. by any chance do you know what is the issue ? or maybe you already have video in this regard? or maybe you can direct me if it is mentioned in between of your videos , i mean the soul of path and especially object to pat function.

Is there a way to do an image offset?

hi I've repeatedly gone over and double checked that I am correctly selecting "text to path" but nothing happens. at the very bottom it does say select a text and path to put text on path. Ive made the circle the same exact way you have and all. Any help? not sure if I have anything disabled or enabled disabling me from doing this. x
@IronEchoDesign2 жыл бұрын
Happy to help! Is the text a special purchased or downloaded font? Just making sure- are you doing the Text on a Circle exercise? Select the text you want, hold shift and select the circle, and then go to the Text Drop-down menu and choose Put on Path. That should do it if nothing funny is enabled or disabled.

how did you get all the options on top on your tool bar? yours seems to have way more options to click than i do on my inkscape. mines only have a few shortcut optons on top, like im missing the align and distribute shortcut and the rest. how could i get more to show on top ?
@IronEchoDesign2 жыл бұрын
Let's fix this! Aside from choosing Dark Mode on the welcome menu, I'm running the setup as it comes without any changes. Do you see a small triangle on the far right of your top shortcut bar? If you do, click on it and it should show you a dropdown of icons hidden, like Align and Distribute. Or...can you expand your Inkscape itself to Full Screen? That might help the top bar have more space to show all the icons. Hope this helps!

@IronEchoDesign2 жыл бұрын
On the right side? On the top menu bar, click on view and then scroll down to where there are radio buttons for Default, Custom, and wide. Try choosing Custom. I don't know why Inkscape calls it Custom. I do my Inkscape videos with the latest version and no changes to setup except I toggle dark mode on.
