Funnily enough, up to now I've always avoided using filters on Inkscape. I thought (wrongly, as it transpired) that they just turned objects into rasters, that I'd lose all information about them and be unable to make any further changes without ending up with more of a mess. A bit like filters in GIMP or Photoshop, you know? Think carefully before applying them, because after that there's no coming back without undoing that step and any one might have made since... glad to see I was wrong on that point! Came across your series while looking for tutorial series, figured I'd give them a go just to see what rudiments I still needed to know, even after a few years. This lesson in particular has been a bit of an eye-opener, so thanks for that! Definitely going to reconsider my position on filters in this program.

I love your Vids. Best Training ever. One of the filters I discovered I liked was taking sans-serif text, large font (100), and Bevels > Stained Glass. Makes the text look like it's come out of a label maker.

One thing I found quite useful is the drop shadow filter. I miss Xara's shadow tool, but the next best thing is the drop shadow filter, which I use alot, especially to bring out text.

So I'm learning and have been on a learning binge going through your videos when I have the chance to. My interest in this is to be able to create decals that I will be uploading to grand turismo dot com to use in the in game livery editor on Grand Turismo Sport. Will these filters affect the ability to vectorize the final product to minimize the file to 15kb(the max size allowed for decal uploads) I'm hoping you'll be showing that lesson on the later vids. I very much enjoy and appreciate your time and effort training us all! Thank you!

Hi! Very interesting tutorials Thank you so much! I have a question regarding the use of filters though. If I duplicate a filtered object and move it to other part of the canvas it changes its form/shape. If I move it back it turns into the initial shape again. Any idea why this is?
@egonpauli1744
@egonpauli1744 4 жыл бұрын
I kind of had the same issue. Here's the thing: Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V => same shape; Ctrl D, move => same shape; BUT: Ctrl+ D, Ctrl + V => doesn't work, i.e. it pastes the object previously copied by Ctrl + C (it doesn't change shape, it just gives you the previously copied one). So you probably messed the two commands like me and used Ctrl + D, Ctrl + V which are two separate actions.
@atema5320

@@egonpauli1744 I'm quite confused so what exactly do you do to stop the object from changing after you have moved it?

Illustrator has a handy 'EXPAND' to merge the stroke and fill on a font to make that font thicker. Great for laser cutting script text for say cake toppers so they don't break after laser cutting. I can't seem to find anything that melt the stock to the fill... can you tell me if there is please.
@TJFREE
@TJFREE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tori. I need to get more experience with laser cutting, but I think people sometimes use the View > Display Mode > Outline view in Inkscape to see only where the laser will cut. Stroke thickness can be deceiving in the default view. I'd love to make some videos specifically on Inkscape and laser cutting, but need to learn it myself first!

@@TJFREE Thank you TJ, to make it easy for you here is a video of the final steps we need to do (Illustrator) to finish off a cake topper for the laser cutter. I'm a laser cutting teacher and have classes in my Azara Collection studio. My students are new to laser cutting and any software like Illustrator or Coral Draw is expensive so INKSCAPE is prefered as at this stage they choose not to pay for a subscription they may not use. See my Instagram page Azara_Collection and FB, and web azaracollection.com.au for examples of my products in my shops (examples for my students). Love to teach you also but I'm in Sunshine Coast Queensland Australia. Videos make a great start. Can you repeat this project in INKSCAPE I have completed in Illustrator? Great videos TJ, going through them all now. Thank you for supplying them. Link... kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6SpZJShn5yBfLs

That's great to hear. I wish more teachers would expose their students to free software. I know some schools receive free licenses or 'student versions' of proprietary software. I think teaching students propriety software exclusively does them a huge disservice. I'll check out the the links you provided and see what i can do!

Ok, I watched your video (great job by the way :) and I was able to recreate the process in Inkscape by selecting the path, and going to Path > Stroke to Path and then with it still selected, going to Path > Break Apart. This should give the same end result as the Pathfinder > Union function in Illustrator, but will result in 2 paths, the inner one can just be deleted. I think there's an even simpler way too, I'll see if I can make a video on it soon.

You might also want to look at Processing that has been created for that purpose. Inkscape is great as vsg editor, however for science art you may have to deal with 3D models, particle generators or animate scenes where the process is break into steps. You would build the svg shapes in Inkscape and do more programmatic things in Processing.

How do you get the filters to work? Because none of the filters is doing anything in my Inkscape (on any of the images I just created in Inkscape). Because of this problem, I just installed the newest version of Inkscape, and still nothing...
@IbrahimAli-sx5lq
@IbrahimAli-sx5lq 3 жыл бұрын
Did you make the selection first before applying the filter?
@ceekayeee
@ceekayeee 3 жыл бұрын
@@IbrahimAli-sx5lq Thanks for replying. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, at the time of my comment I was trying to apply a filter to the whole image, and later I indeed discovered that you can only apply filters to subjects within the image. I think I ended up applying an extension instead (Extensions/Color/Custom, in that case). That was not ideal, but the least inconvenient choice for that specific problem.

Help needed again please. So I'm trying to save an image I made with filter but when I save it as a png so I can sent it to my phone it doesnt save the filters I used. Is there a way I can save it as a picture file and keep the filter effects?
@TJFREE
@TJFREE 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why its being exported without the filter. Is it possible the object with the filter applied is larger than the selection? To check this, choose 'page' instead of 'selection' on the export tab. Also, as a primitive workaround, you could try the 'print screen' button and then just paste the image in gimp and crop to size...

I think I'm having another case of "I'm blind, where are those options?" because my under "Effect Parameters" in the Filter Editor the only thing show is Standard Deviation, and I've expanded that particular window to the max.

I don't know exactly but I think that maybe while installing inkscape you must have taken the minimum installation option so inkscape might have not installed the filters.

TJ sorry to bother you but I have wasted a whole day searching for an answer to this to no avail. Everything I download that should be an Svg file, Google Chrome is changing the file extension to Chrome HTML Document. I find some new Icons for Inkscape and downloaded of course it came as a Chrome file not an Svg file and the properties show it is Chrome HTML Document. How can a folder full of Icons be a Document? Now I am not Glenda the Good Witch of the East on a Computer but I am not the Scarecrow either. Any Ideas?? Thanks in advance, I know this doesn't pertain to you class.

This is a common problem, not only with svg files, but with all file types. Some websites are more difficult to download files that others. I usually right click and go to 'save link as' to try to download the actual file. Here is a test svg you can try to download, see if it works: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics#/media/File:SVG_logo.svg
