This is interesting. I didn't know about clip groups. I only used clip & mask, but this is a lot more "organized" way of work. Thank you. 🖖

Thank you very much, this was very useful. I would love to see a tutorial more in depth on this topic, maybe about your work process on a design like you showed in the end. Have a great week.

Clipping in inkscape has always confused me. Glad you post videos too.

Happy to help! Yes... it is a little confusing and still not as simple as some other vector tools... but it has come a long way. :)

@@2dgameartguru it has. At least I can use it without it crashing now with the most recent update. There are some things Inkscape does very well. Half the reason I took it up was because of the cost of CorelDraw but I have a lot to learn in Inkscape still. I wish they had a setup for clipping like affinity designer. I’m sure I will eventually get used to it

I used CorelDraw for a long time - because I loved their clipping function. Affinity Designer has made it even easier - and is my main vector tool these days. Inkscape is constantly improving and I have a lot of confidence that it will get even better and more stable in the future.

@@2dgameartguru I took an interest in CorelDraw and briefly learned it but it never felt right for me which lead me to Inkscape but I always had trouble running the software leading me to affinity. I have a lot of faith in Inkscape. I like to try and keep up to date but I often forget about it and it’s tools. Videos like this keep it in my radar

Before Inkscape introduced Clip Groups, i used the workaround of grouping an object, then clipping it. You can enter the group and move around the content of the group, or cut and paste more objects inside.

I remember those days... and I hated working with clips in Inkscape - CorelDraw was so much more advanced... and these days I love the ease of clipping masks in Affinity Designer... but Inkscape has come a LONG way since. ;)

@@2dgameartguru I learned that technique in the old Inkscape forum and i just couldnt wrap my had around the concept of grouping one single object. Why would you do that ? How can a single object be a group ?? lolololol I agree about the elegant simplicity in Affinity. You can do a lot of trickery in Inkscape, like masking with a clone, and adjusting the linked original somehwere outside the canvas, but at the same time, its all very complicated.

What is going on here? Does Inkscape not support inverse clipping for groups? At this point "the king" and the text can't be modified easily since the "difference" operations are permanent, correct? If so what is the point of using a "group"?
@2dgameartguru7 ай бұрын
It's an 'additive' group - you can add to the clip's shape and the clip's content but can't deduct - like a Path > Difference while keeping the objects separate. It works well when you want to add/ edit the content inside the clip - e.g. for shading.

clip groups confuses me big time

Play around with some simple shapes. Make a circle a clip group, add a different colour shape inside, duplicate it, move it around, duplicate the clip shape, move it and extend the clip's appearance [or convert it to a path and alter the nodes]. Once you get your head around the way it works, it's an AWESOME tool. :)
