ABOUT MEENAKSHI RAGHAVAN: Meenakshi is a 75 year old Kalaripayattu professional. Kalaripayattu, is one of the oldest forms of martial arts, originating from Kerala, India. Meenakshi feels Kalaripayattu strengthens not only your body, but your mind as well, and is extremely useful for women in situations of danger. She feels blessed to have a family who are supportive of her practice.

Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest traditional Martial Training in the world with its roots from Dhanurveda..... It involves Meithari (body flexibility exercises and sequences), Kolthari (practice with wooden weapons) and ankathari (practice with metallic weapons).... Our Northen kalari martial arts is more prevalent in ancient kerala itself. But in medivial periid it dimed due to many facters but now it gradually revived to its traditional grace Almost all of the youngsters nearby any kalari centre they are utilising for their alround devolopment of an individuals personality.

It is not written . Kalari payattu is passed on from one generation to another generation through "kalari Gurukal" (one who is expertized in kalari). Because of this we have lost a lot of knowledge of kalari. Earlier there were 18 types of kalari 's in kerala but now people know about only 2 types of kalari ie, vadakan kalari & thekkan kalari. For your information no guru teaches everthing he learned to next generation , because of danger of using it in wrong hands. Only students who are capable and has absolute control over his mind could only get teaching from master , the deadliest fighting techniques. Due to all this reason kalari is some what dying . Old glories are not there. But many good masters like her and her family are still help in surviving this martial arts. Kalari is not just a fighting techniques it more than a life learning to master your body and mind. If moved further your energy body too. There are lot more to say about it , it never ends , take it as an introduction. Last but not least, you cannot belive this, kalari payattu is the mother of all martial arts in the world.

As a physical exercise its great, but as an actual sword fighting, its just like any other bullshito, they are just going through the motions, every move is synchronized and choreographed. It would be utterly useless in battle. But then again there are no sword battles today. So its all good.

yes what they are showing is for demo only...this was not a combat sport or anything..it was purely used in warfare...to revive it masters are trying to make it such that it can be used for demo purpose and as an exercise in order to keep it alive...there was a video with a guru explaining why it probably wont be a combat sport since it was never made to do so.. and trying to do so will change the original one and would not be the same. So they only use things like the physical exercise and some changed moves such that it can be showcased for demo and help people know about it. Weapon training is also pretty restricted in schools. Only a limited number is used which is suitable for demo purpose.

Just like the samurai sword can't be used in sport, the same way kelari weapons can't be used in sports related formats. This is a warfare system and not a sporting martial arts. Bhagwan Parshuram started this according to the legend. This is very ancient and also there might be others.

Kalari payattu is a warfare art its not just hand fight. Parshi Raja of Malabar was a great king who couldn't be defeated by tippu sultan and british, so they bribed his general and killed him. He was person who was greatly defined as master of kalari and when he was killed british occupied malabar and banned kalari art to keep people away from training and not revolt.
