Well this is a surprise! Seeing such excellent advice on youtube. If all builders watch this tutorial there would be far more properly built flintlocks out there, the only thing I would add is that it is far better to use a sooty lamp to find your touch down high spots, the blunty marker dries far too quickly in normal room temperatures, and using the soot lamp it is easy to re soot every time you fit up. I also find it easier to get a snug fit by filing a few degree draft on the inlet portion of the lock plate, it goes in and out much easier that way. I look forward to viewing more of your videos. Using a kerosene lamp is a good way to add soot for marking your part to identify high marks in wood for removal. A candle also works. Adding slight draft around metal, I.e. plate, helps with fitting. Good video...

Josh, when I'm laying out the lock, I will use a drop of wood glue and glue a piece of cardboard or a sliver of wood that is the same thickness as the bolster so I can keep the bolster flat against the stock when I'm tracing around it. It helps me to not have it rocking when I'm laying it out to trace the pencil marks. May help others. Hope so.

I have a great deal of experience with Civil War era rifle muskets and weapons from that period in general and I almost screwed up an original lock trying to get the hammer and bolster apart on a friend's 1842. The punch method I find has a tendency to nick a thread or two and on originals, the metal tends to be really soft due to mostly having things just case hardened. I started carrying an assortment of screws with me that are about 3/4 in long and have come to simply threading them all the way down to where they bottom out on the hole in the tumbler and then just hammer the screw head getting the bolster out. Just a tip if you ever have to work on original locks.

Sharpie marker are the last thing I would use to transfer. The smoke from a candle in the best and cheapest short of lamp black.

Josh, are you a proponent of installing the vent liner in front of the breech plug in most cases? I have a rifle with the vent intersecting the breech plug threads to make the stock geometry pleasing at the wrist. Wondering your thoughts? I think you have some good ideas. Like drilling the rr hole first and tweaking the barrel layout.
