Daniel Morales You are not alone, LOL. Not only am I watching it in its entirety, but have watched portions of it more than once! 😁 Although, I must admit these Daniel Smith swatch videos are hazardous to my pocketbook. I already have a severe case of "whole set syndrome" and this only serves to exacerbate the withdrawal symptoms if it's been a while since my last DS purchase. 😂
@kathrynt980116 жыл бұрын
I was so excited to see a ninety minute ILC video, I can’t even tell you. For those of you with “whole set syndrome,” I live near the Daniel Smith store in Seattle, and they will sell you one 15mL tube of every color they make, for the low, low bargain price of $1599.00. I had a 20% coupon once and jokingly asked if they would honor it even for that set, and they said “yes” without blinking an eye. Not gonna lie, I thought about it. Not for very long, but I thought about it.

I am off work today and this is the perfect thing to watch while drinking my coffee. I use Cobalt Teal from Daniel Smith from a tube and I never have a problem with it. It's not something I use a lot, but it's well behaved in the pan for me. I also want to tell you I recently bought DS Yellow Ochre because you love it so much and I am so glad I did. It glows but it has a nice even granulation. I hope to start using it more soon. And as usual, I agree with you on Rose of Ultramarine. I don't use it often, but I love it so much.

Yay! I'm glad the timing worked out well. And I'm always super relieved when people like colors I recommend - I get so nervous! I'm glad to hear the tube of Cobalt Teal is more well behaved. I just think the sticks are not for me in general. I really don't ever enjoy them.

Great video!! The undersea green is pretty close to algae green (almost like dry seaweed (think sushi or California roll), but lighter) so I saw the “under the sea” right away.
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
I suppose so. I think like "Monterey Bay Green" or "Pacific Northwest Ocean" would have done it more for me. Sea to me always sounds more tropical but that could be entirely be the connotation of the area I'm in.

Actually the Daniel Smith website used to sell their empty pans and tins for this very purpose. I was sad when the website quit selling those. I never knew that PY3 was the typical cool yellow chosen until I saw it used repeatedly in sets. It was never in my palette when I started watercolor 10 years ago. My 1st instructor from a 3 day workshop, was abscessed with light fastness, so PY3 was not advised for my starting palette. Later, Susan Harrison-Tustain was my teacher and she doesn't use PY3 either. She told me I was ready to teach so I have been doing that for 6 years.

Color combos can be quite relative, some colors appearing more appealing when seen with their entire, intended palette, and some colors only show their full self when out of a tube.Serpentine Genuine from the tube is much more complex and more beautiful compared to the same color from a stick. It's part of the Daniel Smith mini-palette "Colors of Inspiration", which also includes Moonglow and Rose of Ultramarine. When looking at this palette, the colors make more sense than they do individually. The set also includes Shadow Violet, Lavender and Wisteria.Great channel, I'm enjoying it very much!

It would be tempting to have paint-envy, but owning so many colours would just confuse me. I did cheat a bit and periodically fast-forward so I could see each row at a time; then back-track if I wanted to hear your thoughts on a particular colour. You must have been exhausted after two hours. Daniel Smith certainly has oodles of colours. Thank you for your time and effort on this.

Thanks Mary. As I mentioned these were acquired over the past two years and many of them are small samples. I'm very grateful, but it's not like I have 70 tubes lying around ;) I mainly just wanted to be able to see the colors myself and to show you all so that you could see them for your own uses! I agree that having so many colors can be quite overwhelming.

ds sleeping beauty wc is made with turquoise from the sleeping beauty mine in arizona, which has been closed to turquoise mining since 2012 with no intentions of reopening it. i am amazed that ds got enough of it to open up a color with it but figure it will go the way of quin gold so if anyone is terribly attached to it despite the price you may consider the future of it. sleeping beauty is one of the most expensive turquoises because of it's color and the fact there is no veining in it. i don't care for it as a stone nor paint - to me it is not as turquoise as some of the other wc colors but then i am a picky sort about some things. :)

Hi Denise, needless to say how much I enjoy all your videos,your artistry,your knowledge,your teaching. I am just putting together a DS palette,so am doing a lot of research and choosing colors. I watched all this swatching(I know it’s more than 2 years old) I hope you get this. Wanted to say a couple if things: there is no Azurite Genuine(unless they changed the name since)but that that light dusky blue looks very much like the Lapis Lazuli Genuine, I’m sure you found out this since. Also there is a Primatek called Purpurite, you said you didn’t see it among the Primateks. I’m sure you know that by now too. Out of these 72 colors I’m amazed that most are my favorite colors too. I still maybe need to watch your other even longer DS swatch videos from the dot cards I think. Thank you for all you’re giving us and teaching us.😀

DS Cobalt Teal: I have this in the tube form, I use it all the time, and I haven’t seen that yellowing issue you’re talking about. I have seen that with old tubes of paint in general though, I think the gum Arabic can discolor with age. Garnet genuine vs Quin Burnt Scarlet: they are identical in shade after they’ve dried. The difference is that the garnet granulated and lifts, and the Burnt Scarlet does neither. (In my experience anyway!)

I don't have a problem with my Cobalt Teal Blue from Daniel Smith. For the record, I have a tube. I don't think it does what you say, but I can check if you'd like. Also, I love Fuschite Genuine. I love diluting it greatly so it turns to this pale green-white that's perfect for shading white with. Also, I'm with you on the Cobalts and Cadmiums. I'd love to use up the cobalts I have currently, but there's just nothing that works the way Cobalt Teal and Cobalt Turquoise do for me. Phthalo Turquoise is lovely, but it's a different hue. Cadmiums? There's several colors in those families I think work much better. I've used Cadmiums in the past and I wasn't impressed and went looking for something non-toxic to fit those spots quickly. As for Aussie Red Gold, its dilute form works great as a replacement for dilute Quinacridone gold. Also, it's perfect for cat eyes.

Great video. Thank you for taking the time to do this video. I loved every second of it. I have only two DS stock watercolors and one of them is cobalt teal. I be the same problem rewetting. I’m not a fan of the stick format. I love watching your swatching videos. You’ve helped me organize my own paint swatches and get the information I need on them to make them useful. I’ve been redoing my swatches on Arches instead of my less expensive papers. I loaded up on Arches when it went on sale for just this purpose. I find the swatches much more useful and accurate when I swatch them on the paper I’ll be painting them. I find swatching on wood pulp paper throws off how the paint will flow, stain and glaze. It’s a lot of work to redo my swatches but I need to resize them to fit into the binders like you do. I’m also adding in some additional areas like flow after seeing how Sade Saves The Day does her swatches.

I'm so glad the resources are helpful Bonnie! I too want to add extra information like Sade has on hers, but at this point, it would be impossible to go back and redo everything haha. I'm glad you're able to add it, and that doing it on the Arches is helpful!

DS, my total spotlight despite the local price, kingdom of beautiful colors! :D love them. Not so much my wallet though :D When it comes to toxicity, I always tend to remember we are all exposed to so many toxins during regular living (in food, cosmetics, air, water even...) that painting with "toxic" colors is like nothing compared to that. Not like we eat the color, bathe in it, spread it over ourselves or have tube for snack a day.... The exposure is minimal, if any. But I understand others might have different approach :) still... Latex gloves doctors use should take care of all possible exposures nicely still (ppl with nickel allergy use them so they can keep using colors like PY150 etc). I went personally for Transparent red iron oxide PR101 instead of burnt sienna and granulation is gorgeous! Color similar to your quin burnt orange though, but love it. And PBr6 Enviro friendly brown iron oxide granulates on everything, literally. Shade is similar to your transparent brown oxide on swatch, maybe even a bit darker and cooler (but not black, could be color of my monitor though) but awesome color I would die for, texture wise! I think you would love it :)

I know this is an older video but I wanted to make sure you are aware of how important neutral tint is in a palette. It’s not just another black/gray color. It was created to mix with any color to darken that color without turning it muddy. It darkens while retaining the colors transparency. I use it often and it is invaluable for me. I very much enjoyed watching this and now will watch your newer one where you swatch all of DS colors. I have differing opinions on some of the colors but that is expected. Thank you Denise!
@irritatedlibrarian90572 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that Denise doesn't have any issues with Neutral tint as a color, she just takes issue with the DS version, which uses pbk9. That pigment is known as ivory or bone black, and it's made exactly as you would think from the name. So it makes perfect sense why Denise, an animal conservationist and educator who also tries to be as environmentally friendly as possible, would take issue with any color that uses that pigment.
@loveandlife42222 жыл бұрын
I did not say Denise had an issue with Daniel Smith version of neutral tint - not anywhere in my response. I only wanted to make sure she knew how valuable it is to have and use in a palette - Daniel Smith or any brand. Never was brand specific or pigment choice implied.

My page is filled with cats, flowers, and notes on the video. The fact that you called this a "little swatching video" at the beginning gave me the giggles as well as "hopefully this doesn't take another 40 minutes." I too know the struggle of filling the wells too much... I just get so excited and forget that I didn't want to do that! Every time you said "uh oh" or "oh no" I got so nervous for you! Luckily there wasn't any major problems, like not recording! That Fuchsite Genuine is everything I've ever wanted in a color. A sea foam that sparkles. I savored every minute of this video. I find real-time swatches really relaxing in general but the depth of knowledge and experience in your commentary made it so much more worthwhile to watch than some others I've seen on KZbin. Thanks for everything you do on this channel! I'm looking forward to all the new stuff you have planned! Also, I just need to say that I too was influenced by other people's love of buff titanium and bought a whole 15ml tube (marked down, so not a huge waste of money) because I do portraits and a few artists I follow said it was "great for skin!" It's not. It's a sad murky oatmeal color which people's skin should not be. :( I did make peace with it because I found that adding just a bit into my usual skin tone mixture created a subtle texture that I like, but mostly it either seems to granulate out of mixtures or just make them opaque. I would love to know if you have success with that phthalo trick, though! I might just need to spend some more time playing with it.

Thank you for your kind words Caitlin! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I share your sentiments exactly with buff titanium. I tried that mixture with phthalo green even and was not convinced, lol

Thank you for making this video! I love paint swatching videos and this one is all DS, yaay :D I really don't like it when paints have gel-like consistency like DS' cerulean blue, viridian, cobalt teal, mayan blue, cobalt violet deep, etc. That's why whenever I'd use them, I avoid fiddling with them too much and use larger brushes so it will take less strokes to fill areas with them. Some of them I don't use anymore like viridian, which is a shame because I still have a half pan full of it D:

I had corrected myself in the description lol. It's so pretty! I'd love to see it mixed with your favorite combos!

Oops, sorry - I was leaving comments throughout the video because I only have two settings, now and never. ;) I’ll do some mixes with it and post to Instagram.

What an awesome video! (and yes, I watched the whole thing) I loved seeing all these colors in action! They really do behave very differently. Thanks for this! I FINALLY just got a limited pallette with enough colors that I am happy with. A couple specifically at your suggestion (Phthlo Turquoise and Sap Green) And just SWATCHING that turquoise!!! OH My Goodness! SO pretty! I'm thinking it needs to be a mosasaurus. I just want to make EVERYTHING that color now.

I just got some tubes sent by marty to try... quin rose, wich i love, the pthalo blue and gambouche and french utlramarine finest cant wait to play with those, that pthalo blue is alost leaning to turquoise, but it is sooooo pretty. You were right on the rewetting part though. But nothing that a small eyedropper cant solve and the colors are worth the exxtra step hehe

Thanks to your quin rose color spotlight i now have a primary poppy red,lol, even with the gambouche,wich i used due to lack of hansa yellow deep,haha

Thank you Denise...for this...so nice to see the colours swatched, but soooo wish you could have afforded to use 2 sheets of Arches 9x12 ...the swatches would have been, as you know, so much more for real, instead of streaky , due to the XL paper...and just a couple more dollars...Janis...hope you may consider not using this paper again for this type of video...thank you none-the-less...for getting this massive job done for everyone to see...somewhat...what these paints can do.

Denise one question about watercolors i would be beyond thankful if you find a time to answer and explain to me.I wanted to start to paint and i bought cheap 12 watercolor tubes from Marie's Shangai the cheapest kit there is just to give it a go with some synthetic brushes.There are colors in a set like vermilion that i found online when i google about toxicity that uses some toxic materials and i read that colors wouldn't be colorfast if they were 100 % natural.So pls explain it to me how to find a colors that are not very toxic,who manufactures the colors that i can use to learn how to paint and not be worried about them being made from toxic materials like vermilion or lead colors etc?I am from Europe we also have White Nights watercolors here they are high price but for example if they have colors that are not that toxic from 76 colors they have i would much rather buy those then to try my luck with cheap even when i learn.There is nowhere to find by manufacturer about from what every color is composed so i can decide what colors i want and what i don't that is a big problem for me.Teach me how understand from what pigments are certain non toxic colors made so i can find my starting palate?Ty so much Denise i watched tons of your videos you are awesome artist and a wonderful person.Cheers

I had to look up what pbk9 is. Neutral tint is pbk6, pv19, and pb15. No pbk9. Is there a video where you show your top 12 colors... I'd like to know what you would have if you could only have 10-12 colors. I can afford about 5 colors right now, so I'm pulling my hair out. So far I have quin magenta, medium hansa yellow, pthalo blue with green tint - my primaries. I also ordered a set of the 3 primaries they have...blue, red, yellow. I had Payne's grey in my cart, but took it out...tgough I love that color. I'd rather have pitch black and mix my own grays. I'm the opposite of you. Brown is brown. ;p I also have raw umber in my cart. Wish I could get more earth tones and some of the fluorescent colors, too. But this will be plenty for now.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a couple of rigid wrist braces (for both arms please) to wear at night or while chilling in front of the TV. Get in the habit now, avoid carpal tunnel syndrome later. yuumei.deviantart.com/journal/PSA-for-Artists-Don-t-make-the-same-mistake-I-did-577426340 One of my journalist colleagues had to quit at 42 because of it. My tube of cobalt teal re wets pretty averagely and only the stick does that. My stick form of nickel azo yellow does the puddle thing but rewets about the same due to the nature of the pigment in stick form. Hope that helps!

I LOVED his video! I have a question, did DS change the formulation of the Indian Yellow? Mine is a single pigment of PY108. BTW...My dot card does NOT have Azurite or Purplite on it. You are right ...I would love Purplite.
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Valerie! I believe so. I don't think PY108 is very lightfast. They have a lot of blues so I guess I get not using Azurite, but they have nothing like Purpurite, so I don't know why they'd leave that off!

I love love this video! I’ve been hoping and praying that someday you will do this kind of video and you actually did! Im a big fan here. I watched all your videos and you inspired me a lot. Daniel Smith is gorgeous, i hope you will do the same with Schmincke Horadam since I love then so much as well. Thank you! Love from UAE 😘

Thanks so much for the kind words! I'm so glad you liked this one. The next two that I have the MOST colors to swatch are Holbein and DaVinci, thanks to viewers as well. I have some Schmincke (24 pans and then anything I can scrape off a dot chart), but not a whole lot :( I'll see if I can get a hold of the larger dot card from them.

Denise, the DS brochure I have has Indian Yellow as PY108 (not PY97 and Py150) and since I don't have that color from DS I can't check the tube. Did you get the info from the tube or was it a sample provided by someone else? Would really like to clarify if their brochure is incorrect. Thanks for all the info!
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
I believe that's the old formula. It's now made with PY97 and PY150 according to their current brochure online. I don't recall how I acquired this sample.

Wondering if you could do or have done a purely mixing set video for people like me who are beginners?
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand the question? I have the whole series of mixing videos. I don't own the Daniel Smith essentials set though to do a video on those six colors (I'm missing pyrrol scarlet) if that's what you're asking.
@katherinesimonds6226 жыл бұрын
In Liquid Color. Ignore me. Sometimes I don't know what I'm asking either. I was just thinking if I could only have six-8 or so colors to mix, what would they be. Luv us kiddo. You're doing amazing!

Loved this episode! I had it on at my desk while I did some sketching and practicing. I always love the content of your vids so don't have strong opinion on "live" vs voiceover style of videos. Are you doing no-spend 2018? I was thinking about it too and haven't made any purchases yet. I would really like to use up all the watercolors that I bought during my discovery period that I don't like. Since I'm spending so much time on practice exercises, I thought it would be a good way to go through those. The only exception I would have to make is M Graham's Anthraquinone Blue because I refuse to live without this color :)
@spongebobtanu6 жыл бұрын
Btw, I was briefly looking into the different compounds of paint that are supposedly non-toxic but looks like perylene might be. Do you know anything about this? Does the paint manufacturing process neutralize this? Also learned Anthraquinone creates a honeycomb-like structure which just sounds so wonderful!
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
I am (trying) to do no spend 2018! At least with unnecessary art supplies and Starbucks ;) I am allowing paper and I just picked up an ink brush pen and a bleed proof white I need for a project, but other than that I'm doing okay! As for the perylenes, DickBlick says NA for some and no toxicity for others. I'm not sure about it otherwise though!
