I think something that Marcus Edblad talks about can help solve this. Marcus says he uses ‘one slow hand and one fast hand’. In his explanation, the right hand overtakes the left hand. And that appears to be happening when Steve does his snap around the pole drill.

I just watched four of your videos in a row. I've watched a LOT of golf instructors. A LOT, like 300+ over the past 4 months. None of those instructors have a better understanding of the dynamics of the golf swing than you do. ... At the end of the 3rd video, when you stressed replanting the left heel in order to start the downswing, I was impressed, because that's the move I taught myself in order to start playing my best golf - Jack Nicklaus started his downswing by replanting the left heel. Like you, he spoke in terms of using the ground first and foremost while "uncoiling the spring". It all starts from the ground-up: the footbone is connected to the kneebone, which is connected to the hipbone, which is connected to the shoulderbone, which is connected to the elbowbone, which is finally and ultimately connected to the wrist/handbone which is the end of the bullwhip. ... You also talked here about slowing down to go faster, and how one leaves the arms and hands behind at the top as the downswing is started by replanting the left heel - the left heel is the farthest point away from the hands at the top, and by replanting the left heel the built-up coil of the backswing is used most efficiently by replanting the left heel and creating a braced left leg in which to pull that coil down and around... ... From the top of the swing, YES, the arms and hands should simply be allowed to "go along for the ride", with almost zero conscious effort used to hit the ball - I think in terms of "hitting the ball with my left foot/heel" - that may sound crazy, but it takes the arms and hands mentally out of the equation. ... Yes, you need a proper takeaway. Yes, you need a proper set position at the top. But, the entire backswing is simply a prelude to replanting the left heel and using both feet and the ground correctly during the downswing. ... The beauty of swinging from the ground-up is that, the hands (*which contain 42,598 very fine nerves and bones*) will be minimized in the sense that they will not be asked to manually manipulate the clubhead, hence, the big muscles of the legs, torso, and shoulders will control the downswing thru the hitting zone, and the all-important hands (end of the whip) will be asked to play their proper role at the proper time, but no more than that. ... Smart man! Very good communicator!

What I still cannot figure out is HOW to do it. The action of the left shoulder being pulled back and up is part of it. The arms flinging off the torso is part of it. I think a big misconception is the idea of completing the swing for speed. Totally false in my experience The power should be delivered by releasing the club with force just after the ball so you should move as quickly as you can to the impact position and force the release into the ball and the follow-through is really in my experience The part of the swing that’s putting on the brakes
@wordofmo7 ай бұрын
Great video. I’m not sure that this is something that should be consciously practiced other than making sure the wrists are relaxed enough that the physics will take over and do this automatically. What do you think? If the wrists are tight then the only way to create more speed through impact is to try to speed up the arms but that eliminates the whipping motion. Another analogy of the whipping is a nunchuck stick. Your wrists are the chain or leather piece between the two sticks. Your club is one stick and your arms are the other. That’s what makes nunchucks so dangerous. There is an incredible amount of speed created without too much effort from the arms.

It's basically what Mike Austin says when he talks about the hands like being a "differential" in a car. The problem is, not many people know how a differential works. Basically when a car is making a sharp turn, it allows the inside wheel to rotate "backwards" in relation to the outside wheel, even though both wheels are rotating in the same direction relative to the direction the car is traveling; otherwise the outer wheel would drag which is what happens if you just pull your left hand through. This is evident if you have the rear jacked up and you try to rotate one tire - the other tire rotates in the opposite direction. But even though the hands "reverse" position, they are still traveling as a unit though its own arc path.

Long ball hitting boils down to to strength. I'm not a great golfer, and i'm the first to admit it. I'll be 75 this December, and play with several guys close to my age,who are impressed with my 300 yard drives, and cant figure it out. Every 3 days i lift weights, and in between i run on my treadmill, i refuse to let old age overtake me.I take testosterone supplements, drink whey protein shakes, and take all kinds of vitamins. These guys could do the same easily, but prefer not to go to that trouble. I only play several times a year, and rarely practice, but i do try to stay ahead of the aging process as long as i can. If you dont have a lot of strength, you're not going to hit the ball far. There is no secret.

Watch and Rory or Tiger's slow motion swing and they don't slow the hands down. Even your swing the snap comes from the lift of the club from the swing arc, it should come naturally not from stopping your hands in the downswing. Terrible advice.

I GUARANTEE you that Tiger and Rory's hands slow down into impact. Probably from around 22-23 mph down to 16-18 mph. John Daly was probably best at it. Jamie Sadlowski confirmed goes from 27.5 down to 15.7. The hands must keep going positively from the rotation and lifting of the shoulder but that's not the only source.
@DanielEvans-ye7cp7 ай бұрын
@@beauhughes1621 Of course you use the hands but you never stall them to create a whipping motion like you do when you snap a towel, when snapping a towel you pull your hand back to create the whip and if you did that with your hands in the golf swing it would be tragic. The hands travel the fastest about 12" from impact and even though they slow down they don't stop and whip at the ball. The unhinging of the wrist set is what creates club head speed not snapping your wrist. How many guys are going to the range to try and snap their wrist at the ball after seeing this video. You watch Tiger lag the club head and when his hands are 12" away from impact he still has over 90 degrees of lag and he doesn't stop his hands.
