Oh the good old days. I was 20 when I went to that concert. They were just one of four bands that played that day. Santana, Peter Frampton and The Outlaws were the others. They all played a second concert at the same place on July 4th.

I bought their first album because I love southern rock. I was alive before Heavy Metal was even a thing. I don't gatekeep music genres either, I listen to all music if I think it's good. My music tastes range from R&B/ Doo Wop to Thrash Metal and everything in between, including Classical music.

Three months after this performance, their plane ran out of fuel, 15 minutes from their destination. Several members of the band, including Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gains, and Cassie Gains were killed, along with several members of the crew. They were one of the best live bands, ever. Band took the name from a gym teacher that used to give them a hard time for having long hair. His name was Leonard Skinner. This concert is about two months before a plane crash that took the lives of Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer), guitarist Steve Gaines (white shirt, red pants) and sister Cassie Gaines (backing singer).

I was at this concert at the Oakland Coliseum July 2, 1977. It was one of a series of summer concerts there every year called "Day on the Green", organized and promoted by Bill Graham, a legendary promoter who was responsible for most concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area in those days. Graham brought all the great bands to the Bay Area. Every week of the year some top band was playing somewhere in the area. Ticket prices ranged from about $6-$12. This day there were 4 bands, with The Outlaws opening the show, followed by Santana, then Lynyrd Skynyrd, and finally Peter Frampton.

I'll be 60 in September, and I've been listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd almost my entire life. All of my favorite memories of my youth include Lynyrd Skynyrd playing in the background. I've had 2 amazing dogs named Skynyrd, and my newest 5 month old pup is named Lynyrd. In America's Deep South where I grew up, Lynyrd Skynyrd members are gods. This is the best performance of "Freebird". It really shows how great each member really was. Shows off Billy Powell's classical piano training and how the "3 Guitar Army" of Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines can jam together as one entity, and don't forget Leon Wilkeson on bass. And driving everything is Artimus Pyle on drums. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant was at the top of his game and never sounded better. Even the back-up singers, JoJo Billingsly, Leslie Hawkins, and Cassie Gaines are just amazing. They are all gone now except for Artimus who is still rockin' out with his own band and playing many of Skynyrd's old standards in tribute to his fallen brethren.

The girls were not wearing their bras. It is casual wear called halter tops...very popular at the time. There are no words in the song after the "bird" flys away and when you listen the guitars sound like a bird flying flapping it's wings faster and faster as it soars into the sky and joins a flock.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was from the deep South - Jacksonville, Florida and they championed the 'Southern rock' sound which mixed country w/ rock music, debuting in 1973... They were also famous for their 3-guitar line-up that made them a live attraction on tour. The band named themselves after a high school teacher that they actually hated - Leonard Skinner 😂 Tragically, none of the original members are alive today and Lynyrd Skynyrd will be remembered for the tragic 1977 plane crash that killed their lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, one guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines, one of their backing singers... (They were in this clip) The other members seen here were - Allen Collins (guitar), Gary Rossington (slide guitar), Billy Powell (piano), Leon Wilkeson (bass) and Artimus Pyle (drums)... Only Artimus Pyle (ex-drummer) is alive today after surviving the plane crash. The others passed away in the years afterwards... Original members Bob Burns (drums) and Ed King (guitar) passed away and Gary Rossington, the last original member, passed away recently. The classic Lynyrd Skynyrd w/ singer Ronnie Van Zant released 5 studio albums in the 70's and 1 live album 'One more from the road'... The live version of 'Freebird' is considered one of their greatest songs... Other classics include - 'Sweet home Alabama' ... 'That smell' ... 'Simple man' ... "What's your name" ... 'Gimme three steps'... 🔥 In 1987, an agreement was reached w/ Ronnie Van Zant's widow Judy (who owns the rights to the name Lynyrd Skynyrd) to reunite the band only if 3 original members r in the band to tour and record new music ... Ronnie's younger brother Johnny Van Zant joined as the new singer of Lynyrd Skynrd til today... Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, Ed King and Artimus Pyle were all involved (Guitarist Allen Collins was paralyzed in a car accident and passed away in 1990) However, more members left the band or passed away... but Lynyrd Skynyrd was still in demand because of their legacy of music, so new members were brought in to tour... Guitarist Gary Rossington passed away in 2023, being the only original member left alive til then and he had kept Lynyrd Skynyrd active. The band plans to continue touring w/ singer Johnny Van Zant, guitarist Ricky Medlocke and others.

The bird chirping sound is coming from Gary Rossington's slide guitar.

Yeah, he uses the slide to produce the harmonics. There are spots on the fret board where if you either tap lightly or slide lightly with a slide, you'll get that harmonic or chirping sound.

Your reaction at the 10:20 mark forward says it all. I'm 66 and saw lots lot live bands in the 70's, and nothing will compare to this. These were true professionals. LIve, studio, the licks were all the same. There is a live perforance in London a year earler where they opened for the Stones, and blew everyone away. They were told not to go on to the tounge stage, but they did. EPIC.

An amazing band that lineup left us too soon due to a plane crash taking the singer, a guitarist the guitarist singer and backup singer. I think the crash was shortly after this performance. They were one of the biggest bands in the 1970s and at their peak when the plane crash happened. Their other big hit is Sweet Home Alabama but they have so many great songs. Tuesday's Gone, Saturday Night Special, Gimme Back My Bullets, Gimme Three Steps, T For Texas, The Ballad of Curtis Loew. They were a Southern Rock band originally from Jacksonville, Florida if I am not mistaken.

Lynard Skynyrd was the name of the PE coach at the high school that Ronnie Van Zant attended in Jacksonville, Florida where all of the members of the band were from. And what you were listening too was Southern U.S. Rock n' Roll. You will be interested to know about just how talented about each of this bands actually were. And what you will also be fascinated by is its combined work ethic that produced the magic you just heard. At the heart of it all was Ronnie Van Zant, their lead singer and songwriter whose sheer will brought and kept the band together. He was a no-nonsense, working-class type of man who had a dream of becoming a star and did everything to achieve it. The 1970's was an interesting period in American history. A time when old style ethics and morays were giving way to the new ideals by a new generation of American youth who were taking their place in society. And what can I say? You were looking at a crowd of people who would become your parents having the time of their lives!

Their music is great and you should just ignore the negative people that have never understood the confederate flag and what it stands for as that has nothing to do with your reaction to the music. One of the greatest guitar jam sessions ever. Sadly, several of the band members were killed in a plane crash not long after this concert. The band did reform ten years later after the lead singer, Ronnie VanZant's little brother was convinced to take over as the lead vocalist. They are still performing. Anyway, loved your reaction and I would suggest listening to "Sweet Home Alabama", "Tuesday's Gone", "Simple Man", "Ballad of Curtis Loew", "Gimme Back My Bullets" just to name a few that will give you the real flavor of the bands music. This is from the days when I went to a lot of concerts. (I graduated high school in 1979) It was held at a baseball stadium. The event was part of an annual series of shows called Day On The Green where a LOT of big names performers came and played. And the name is pronounced as LIN-erd SKIN-erd

Back in the day going to shows like this was a common occurrence for many of us. I was actually in that biz and practically lived at shows, many, many just like this. Unfortunately the plane crash happened before I got a chance to work with them. I did get to do a Rossington Collins Band show latter. Oakland California. Across the bay from San Francisco. They had concerts during the summer called-- 'Day on the Green'. They featured 5-6 well known bands. The concert capacity was 64,000+ fans, and a LOT of cannabis. (Shh--wasn't legal) I was there in 1980 watching Santana and the Rolling Stones, on Mick Jagger's birthday. A plane flew overhead and dropped several thousand balloons on the crowd. Glad you enjoyed this wild performance.

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1977. The concert that you played here was on my birthday in '77. I don't think that the stadium is staying there after this season. There is no longer a Pro Football, Basketball or Baseball team in Oakland after 2024. All of the professional teams moved to other cites. The football team is in Las Vegas now, and the Oakland Athletics' baseball team's lease ends after the 2024 season, which is where that concert was held. The baseball team applied to move to Las Vegas as well. I saw them play in Lexington, Kentucky in May of that same year. Three of those guys died in a plane crash in Mississippi in October of 1977, that same year. That haunted me for a couple of years afterward.

I got a chance to see a group called the Outlaws live - similar type of music. The energy from their live version of Green Grass and High Tides has a similar vibe. There is a live version "Outlaws - Green Grass And High Tides - 11/10/1978 - Capitol Theatre" that I would recommend checking out - but be warned, it's 23+ minutes!!! :)

This was Southern rock. I saw them do this at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, NC in 1974. It was Under the Stars festival and featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! That said this was not a one off performance. This happens to be the best remastered video of them from that era. This song was a show finale and was always over the top! You probably know a plane crash 3 months later killed key band members making this video the last of that era.

That concert was about 3 months before the plane crash… I seen them 3 times before that horrible day that some of them died. So any Lynyrd Skynyrd songs 1977 or earlier is from this band. There is a modern day Lynyrd Skynyrd band that the lead singer is the younger brother of the one that passed in the plane crash. He has been singing about 35 years and they are touring with ZZ Top and I just seen them a couple of weeks ago.

Lynard Skynard is one of a few very popular "Southern Rock" bands. This particular performance is a bit comical in the "Confederate" stage set. You recognized the Mount Rushmore image, but probably didn't notice that only the two "Southerners", George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were included. It's my understanding that the band was not aware of what the stage set would be before the concert. Another "southern Rock" favorite is the Allman Brothers band.

Sadly, this is one of their last performances before the plane crash. Singer Ronnie Van Zant asks the question "if I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me?". Little did he know that the entire WORLD still remembers him almost 50 years later! Yes Ronnie. We definitely remember you! RIP Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Allen, Billy, Artimus, Leon, and Gary. You are all legends.
