Innovating with Photonics Technology - Tympany Medical (Ireland)

Tympany Medical, an award-winning company focused on endoscopy for ear, nose and throat (ENT), is the focus of the first video in the series. The company, which is based in the west of Ireland, is developing a next-generation endoscope for minimally invasive ENT procedures that enhances the capabilities of the surgeon by providing panoramic vision and self-cleaning functionalities.
Photonics has been a key enabling technology in the development of Tympany Medical’s endoscope. Support was initially received through an ACTPHAST For Researchers demonstrator project while still a university research group (at National University of Ireland in Galway). A seamless transfer to ACTPHAST 4.0 following the creation of the spin-out company allowed for a follow-on prototyping project.
The European Photonics Accelerator Programme led to a new international cross-border collaboration between Tympany Medical and the ACTPHAST partner VUB in Belgium. The projects also involved Tyndall Institute in Ireland, a leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) hardware and systems, for their packaging expertise. Over the coming months, other companies across Europe that have received support through photonics innovation programmes will be featured in further videos being produced by Comm2B for PhotonHub. Through highlighting key success stories to date behind EU-funded programmes for photonics innovation support, PhotonHub hopes to increase awareness of and interest in opportunities for companies across a broad range of sectors to innovate and accelerate product development through photonics.
