Western NSW producer John Vagg calls the Merino sheep a “leaf-eater” - that is, their high running costs meant they were always eating a leaf out of his cheque book.
When the wool market crashed 20 years ago, he went looking for an alternative and it was right under his nose - goats. Today John has a low-cost enterprise which he can run single handedly with the support of a couple of working dogs.
John’s goat business grew from him applying livestock management principles - such as genetic selection and grazing management - to the feral goats previously harvested from his property as a sideline.
The other benefit is having a livestock system which works with the challenging Western NSW environment, not against it.
His only problem now is living long enough to achieve all his farming goals.
