Inokism is alive and well on the internet. I've gotten in arguments with people contending that a certain lower card wrestler with an MMA background shouldn't have loss to a much bigger draw because one guy is a trained fighter and the other isn't.

The death of kayfabe. Wrestlers are supposed to be shoot fighters in the ring. So an MMA should be good at wrestling but PRO wrestlers are supposed to be the best fighters
@straydogswagger42802 жыл бұрын
Which is weird because if you were to step back and think about it in kayfabe, professional wrestling has a completely difference rule and skill set than MMA. So, you could hand wave it by saying that the professional wrestler would have the leg up until the MMA fighter becomes more seasoned. I mean, this logic is the basis for MMA, since it started off as a competition between different fighting styles, each with their own rule set in their own origin sports. You could extrapolate this logic even further with the difference between MMA (a sport) and true to life combat. I mean, you get an Army Ranger versus a UFC fighter in a back alley, and you have two radically different philosophies and approaches to the fight.

Ah yes, Inokism, the dark days of NJPW. I have vague memories of the likes of Bob Sapp and Brock Lesnar winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. At least Inoki got ousted before he ran his own company to the ground. And, yeah, I see the parallels to Vince McMahon trying to make WWE 'Sports Entertainment' over wrestling to Inoki trying to make strong style 'legit'.
@Thor-Orion2 жыл бұрын
Lesnar winning is fine though. He was a huge draw everywhere he went in both wrestling and MMA. The problem was how it happened and his booking and such. Plus him refusing to drop the title or wrestle at all.
@AegisKHAOS2 жыл бұрын
@@Thor-Orion I agree, Brock being IWGP Champ in itself wasn't the issue, but the stuff surrounding it was the issue. In fact, I say Brock is one of the few names where it made sense to book him as champ, and if not for things like walking out of NJPW with the IWGP Heavyweight title, it would've been fine. I also remembered Bob Sapp being quite popular in Japan at the time as well, and I recalled him wrestling with and against Mutoh in AJPW.

It's not really NJPW as such, it's the mentality of Japanese companies. We have fair use here in the west that is still a slippery subject and had to be fought for. Love your vids Dave, this might be my new favorite. Just to add some context.... Inoki v Ali isn't just reviewed poorly, it was such a disaster that it severely damaged the entire industry in Japan as well as Inoki's rep. Though he would still be able to say he survived the greatest fighter on earth at his own sport which eventually only added to his mystique. Inoki having Ogawa shoot on Hashimoto is actually a callback to Rikidozan. In the 50s Rikidozan was going up against the judoka Kimura in a planned worked match. But the thing is, even though Kimura was probably the superior fighter, if you go into a match you think is a work, by the time you realize it's a shoot it's too late and you are just getting your ass kicked. That's how the legend of Rikidozan really took off.

TBH in my opinion about Inokism, I think Inoki's thinking of his strong style went a different direction, I think maybe because he saw shoot style pro wrestling, like that's what he favours more all of a sudden, that's why he started Inoki Genome Federation, that's why the IGF has MMA & shoot style pro wrestling, I get strong style, I understand it, when they do holds, submissions etc. they do it exactly how it's supposed to be done, like Bas Rutten explains & he also did some time with NJPW, but at the end of the day you have to remember it's pro wrestling it's storytelling, for myself I do not like shoot style pro wrestling, for whoever likes it by all means enjoy it, but for me it's either you do MMA or pro wrestling, pick one, thank goodness my first exposure to MMA was Pancrase thanks to Suzuki & Funaki, for me I just laugh whenever someone like Keiji Muto a black belt in Judo, a legit shooter, goes to pro wrestling to pursue a career in it & to create his character/gimmick the Great Muta, then there's guys who doesn't do martial arts goes to UWFi to be this "shooter", but hey that's my opinion, please do correct if I'm wrong, but this is just what I think...

This might be true in the US but Japanese fans definitely shifted toward MMA when it was new and novel. First the shoot promotions like UWFi marketed themselves as real fighting and built their whole rep on being more authentic than NJPW, then when actual MMA started with PRIDE they became even more disillusioned with wrestling, until later when it became clear that real fighting can often be dry and boring, then J-MMA fell off a cliff.

It's not every time. And yes agreed, WWE hase been losing ratings for years.. ever since Brock's reign of terror started interestingly enough. And while yes, ratings for episodes that Brock appears on do go up sometimes, those are the episodes around major PPVs when they go up anyway. The nothing episodes don't go up when Brock is on. And every Ronda episode def does not raise ratings

I think Inoki saw former Pro Wrestler Kazushi Sakuraba's success in MMA and he could duplicate it with his NJPW talent.

@@DaveKnowsWrestling I'm sure if Vince and anoki wore friends I'm very sure he would have told him to cut this bs out and get back to being a pro wrestling company.

Vince did all the same crap. Brock, Ronda, Brawl-for-all, Tyson Fury, Cain Velasquez, etc.

Next time, *Dave Knows Wrestling* would probably do another video called VINCE-ISM. Is impossible to ignore the flaws that weren't fixed until "The Chairman" is gone and "The Game" took charge in booking.
