Inputting False Position Data - Does Felis 747-200 Know?

Modern Aircraft "Know" if you enter False Pos Data. The Old-Skool INS systems had no way to check... So what happens if we PURPOSELY put False Position Information In to begin with?
This video is reserved for those who (like me) occasionally like to geek out on the technicalities of aviation, navigation and flight simulation. If you want high octane stuff - best give this one a miss!
I really would like your feedback on this, so if you see a mistake in my methods, or a flaw in my hypothesis - PLEASE COMMENT!
Felis - If you ever sees this (I did a bunch of tutorials on GWB) - Your thoughts would be great too. Whatever the outcome of this video, or whatever code is run in the INS on the backend, please do NOT waste days of your time trying to add even more code, to try simulate all kinds of beyond the edge of the envelope things that almost nobody is ever gonna even see. You have a really good plane - a bit of optimisation maybe, otherwise 10/10!

If you are a former Pilot or Flight Engineer, from anytime in the "Golden Era" (which we'll define vaguely as "post war - 2001”) then I would love to hear from you. Commercial or military is the interest group, because I want you to share your story with the world, in a KZbin interview format. You will have a story or 2, from back in the day, that will be interesting to anyone fascinated with aviation, specifically from a time where computerisation hadn't yet killed the joy of flying. It's not that current pilots are excluded, but we all perhaps did things in flying that we'd rather our current employer didn't know, or didn't want to know! (Deliberate or otherwise - ever heard Mike Banisters talk about his competition? Who could take off the lowest over a hotel, and shake it the most? He became BAs chief concorde pilot). To share these stories and many more, without any time constraints will be the goal. If you've ever seen war veterans being interviewed, that's the sort of thing I'm aiming for, but for you experiences, from when you very first became interested, until the day you landed for the last time. To contact me, please see the channel information contact page, or visit www.tacticaltakeover.com and follow through the contact page (for spam purposes i can't just put email here). I will require some basic proof you are who you say (so many chancers out there full of BS). Many thanks, i look forward to hearing from you!

There are just so many examples even in incidents in the public consciousness where a third pair of eyes, sometimes a fourth in the case of relief crews, have helped avert disaster. It does indeed help.

Yeah that one was pretty geeky and over my head. I did watch it all though.

An INS can figure out its latitude from the rotation of the earth, I think. but for longitude there's no way to know except via external input

This is an interesting point, as the rotation of the earth is obviously going to vary, depending how close to the pole/equator the aircraft is. The INS systems do align more quickly at the equator. Looking into this whole issue further, it is interesting that NASA use a "stationary none rotating" model of the earth to calculate their positioning data. Before anyone dismisses this off hand, I encourage you to verify this at ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/19890005752 These were earlier (1988) systems, that have all their documentation published online for us to read. I highly recommend going through it, because it makes you wonder how they could even calculate their position at all, if they ignored the rotation of the earth, and assumed it to be stationary for the purposes of their navigation systems.

I wish this module was in MSFS. The 747 classic is the best vintage airliner aside from Concorde. I'm waiting for the FS labs Concorde.

It's really one of the main reasons why I fly both simulators (DCS makes 3) - there's pros and cons to them all, and aircraft type/quality/availability is a big one. Thanks for watching

DCS has been my favourite for 8 years, mainly due to quality control and optimisation. X-Plane looks average on my rig and runs at unplayable frame rates unfortunately.

Hey nice video! I dont know if it is simulated in this aircraft but any motion of the aircraft while being in the alignment process can cause a wrong alignment. And your refueling and loading caused such a motion

You raise a really good point. I know in DCS they simulate this (so you can't load weapons while it aligns). In xPlane, I have not found any aircraft that ever was upset by this. I've aligned no problem in very bad weather, where the aircraft is rocking around the gusty winds at the gate, and there's no negative consequences at all. I'm not sure if this is an xPlane thing, or of it's specific to individual aircraft makers. Thanks for a really great comment!

@@InternetFlightRules "In xPlane, I have not found any aircraft that ever was upset by this." Probably just the Challenger 650. I know for a fact that thing won't align properly if you're getting buffeted by gusts. There's a chance others may but most of the time they don't bother, the alignment is just a timer that counts down before giving you nav capabilities...
