I live in a very conservative place and I present as masc white man. I find a lot of bros assume I'm on their "side" just because I like camping and shooting and such. But I find I can use that privilege to get them to listen to me about important things more than they'd listen to anyone else. It's unfortunate that certain people will only listen to masculine-presenting men about anything. But we can use it to the advantage of the people we care about. We can use our privilege for very important things.

I have a similar experience. Friends on the left and the right both assume I agree with them on everything major because the issues are so obvious that there's no way any reasonable person could disagree with them, and that provides a lot of opportunity to introduce nuance into black and white issues. Hardest part is holding your tongue until you find the question to ask that causes the most soul searching. "Why should the government get to violate bodily autonomy in cases of abortion when we agree it's wrong in every other case? Wasn't overriding our autonomy to save other lives their whole justification for vaccine mandates?" "What if transfemme athletes start to push AFAB women out of certain sports?" If you're lucky the group will be split over the answer and you won't have to support either side, just let them debate on their own. I kind of assume it's the same for other groups, I'm never going to convince a black woman of anything, but maybe somebody she views as more like her could?

I also live in a very conservative place Southern Georgia and it's sad that so many conservatives don't believe the second amendment should apply basically to any group they don't like. I don't know how many people I've met that thought I was on their side. Talking about if a trans person came into their store to buy a gun. They would only sell them a single bullet and when I didn't laugh they tried to explain the joke to me and I just told him it wasn't funny at all. There are too many conservatives that make fun of fuds for saying nobody needs an assault rifle, but they are the same way. They just don't believe gay people or black people or literally anyone who doesn't look or act just like them deserves to own a firearm

I think you touched on something important here, that I feel like too many people see as the same thing, and that's the difference between proactive and provocative. I see a sentiment in some communities that doing anything less than as loudly as possible is the same thing as doing nothing, and I feel like that can discourage people who can't or don't want to go "all out" from participating at all. Yes, there's absolutely a time for flying the banners high and shouting it from the rooftops, but just as important--and far more often overlooked or discounted, I think--is the quiet support, the personal allyship, and the small acts of kindness. You don't have to save the whole world at once. Helping one person in one small way still makes the world a better place.

I'll never forget reading about GCA, and how it specifically targeted 'cheap' handguns (being imported)...cuz gov knew they were being sold to the lower-middle/impoverished classes (new, via pawn shops etc). $30-50 in 50-70s 4 handgun = affordable-ish. So basically gov didn't want blacks and other minorities to have easy access to firearms (in 1960s, NOT 1860s).

Raven Arm's n Co STEPPED UP and made their Zamek line of cheap domestic handguns to make up for Rohm/Rossi/etc that couldn't get imported...GOV took great exception to this; and basically drove them out of business any way they could. This whole video reminded me of my aunt. I was kicked out for being trans in April and a few weeks later my aunt contacted me. We had a chat, she was very supportive of me and understanding of the circumstances. She said if I needed any help, call her first. Well, a couple months later, August if memory serves, I got an eviction notice. Our landlord jacked up the price by 40% and I wasn't gonna make that by my income, so I needed to move out. I called up my aunt and asked her if I could stay over at hers for a week or two, to figure out where I can afford to live in. Her response was "hey umm, it's best that you go on and apologize to your parents, and boymode until you're out of their house". Retrospectively, maybe this is the only option she saw viable for me and didn't trust me with my ability to pull together. I can understand that now. But at the time, telling me to go back into the closet and beg my way back for accommodation felt like betrayal from her end. So I just said okay, hung up and went it my way. Nowadays I'm in a housing with my name on the lease and enough income to do pretty much whatever I fancy as a student. I'm still a bit bitter at what my aunt did, but I cannot entirely blame her for being overwhelmed at the situation - it was my first steps into independence, albeit forced by my parents for completely the wrong reasons.

This is definitely an interesting and thought-provoking question. I have often wondered the same thing, and have mostly decided that (for me) keeping to myself and drawing less attention is best. But, that's just because realistically I don't like the attention, discussions, etc. when out and about. I just want to be left alone, and would rather not make a statement while doing so. However, I applaud those who do make the effort to make a clear and obvious statement in their everyday actions, and may occasionally venture into that realm, but rarely. I do recognize that in making my choice, I'm actively doing nothing whatsoever to increase support for a fairly major issue, but I am more worried about inadvertently making us all look bad somehow.

This is a wonderful take on this issue that I think more people need to hear. I feel like it’s really hard to tell someone that being an ally is a huge ask. That really all you can hope for is people to be willing to live and let live. But in today’s political climate that ideology is treated like it’s not good enough. Ive had conversations about this to open allies. I had to be honest with them and say that while I never wish any ill will upon anyone in their community. I’ll never prioritize their struggles above my own. That answer never gets a positive response and it sucks because I’m not looking to cause anyone harm. I just don’t have a dog in that race and that shouldn’t be a bad thing. Me not being your ally doesn’t make me your enemy.

The more I've seen your stuff, the more it inspiring to have someone be open and honest about where you stand and use your platform for education and inspiration to those less served by gun owners who claim dominance over the community and yet don't practice tolerance for the rights given to us as the common people. Thank you so much for all the great content, while still making your stance clear!

I feel like this came at a good time as people might have to spend Christmas with others they disagree with. Today I'm going to a family gathering and I truly dread it but I can't make my situation worse by not interacting with people. Thankfully(Regretfully?) there's nothing externally different about me (yet) but I hate being around people that I feel go out of their way to be ignorant and disrespectful of people different from themselves. After recent events I have even stronger opinions about those around me and it's exhausting to try to get along with people so radicalized, especially family. It feels like that disgusting bit in The Walking Dead where the characters smear zombie guts on themselves to walk through the horde. As always thanks for your opinion Karl. And to anyone else out there let's just do our best.

Has the respect brought you peace? Have you found the place you belonged all along? And can you respect those that only respect you now that you fit their ideal of respectable? I am 63 and my default is beareded long hair, and I do ride. I have changed my appearance several times, specifically to be accepted in certain circles. I found that once some people got to know me, my appearance and passion for motorcycles didn't seem to detract from our friendship or association, as the case may be. I've almost always returned to form right before their eyes. For others it was all about their pre-judgement and prejudices based on appearance and stereotypes. I would like to think that any respect the former have for me is based on my abilities and character. And I couldn't care less about the latter. What's your experience?

As others have said, but as I've come to find in my own experience, freedom and empathy. We would not have the America we have today, or more especially, the America we had 10 or 20 years ago, without a community bonded and united. I feel we've made advances over the past decades, yet have deteriorated where it counts because we are no longer a safe country to be against the tide. A sea of mindless folks who needlessly hate, and refuse to understand the fights of fellow individuals, and who do not understand that by not standing together on many issues we get absolutely none. Who here in the 2A crowd also then fights for healthcare for all? Who in the healthcare industry then fights for better labor protections but also to get our industry back up and running? Who fights for infrastructure and public transit reforms also fighting the rampant consumerism that is overproducing and also destroying causing enormous amounts of pollution? Every fight, individually, has it's oppressors. Has folks who will always stand against. But what I'll tell you, is a community that stands together is a community that overcomes, or a community that will fall together so they can rise back up again. If you want a better America, we need to stop hating one another's fight and even if we are not completely ideologically in agreement, we are united. We can't do much with the level of corruption unless we all stand together for the fights that need to happen, and for what we want to see. There's a reason civics isn't taught in school, or why local organizations talking about politics and what we want to see went away. Why only the rich and powerful have a say. We all got complacent, and we all divided each other up, now wondering why we have so little support. It's time we work together, time that we respect one another, and regardless if we disagree with how another lives their life, as long as it is not endangering others, or destroying someone's life themselves, that we need to band together. It's obvious what this video's topic matter is about, regardless how you see it, be someone who can respect those people, and fight for their right to be treated equally, and let them make their decisions in their life. it is not yours to live nor choose. Your support and care is what might allow people who would otherwise never try to understand you and your fight, to show their care and support as well. Do not keep the cycle of hate abrewing, our country is falling into turmoil, and we have enough issues as is, that all need immediate attention. Not 20 years from now, not 30 years to get any level of change, now. To see that, we need a United community. United Americans in the fight to save this country, save our rights, ensure other's rights, and live free.

Think clearly about your own threat level, too. Why do you need to be a 'grey man?' Is someone after you? How many times last year did violence occur in your immediate presence (i.e. you saw it happen, not "well one of my girlfriend's patients knew a guy who got stabbed")? If the answers to those questions are "no, nobody wants me dead" and "between zero and three times, none of them life-threatening" then I'd suggest that you don't need to be a grey man: you could wear a PROTECT TRANS KIDS shirt and a Pink Pistols hat every day without putting your safety at any risk. Now, if people are getting stabbed or shot around you on the regular, your situation is wildly different from mine (and most Americans') and I can't give you much useful advice. But there is one thing I can say: if that's your life, maybe stop reading youtube comments and see if there's something you could be doing to change that situation or get out of it. For the rest of us... 'Grey man' gets used a lot of ways. Sometimes it just means "don't look like a mall ninja," and that's good advice. "Dress in a way that, if some rando were to ask themselves 'which person in this store is armed,' they wouldn't immediately pick you" is also good advice. But unless you're in a very dangerous situation, or doing surveillance, or about to do some really cool crimes, you probably don't actually need to go to the level of "be the guy nobody can pick out of a police lineup." Hell, you're probably breaking that rule already: ever wear a shirt or hat with a logo? Ever wear bright colors? There you go. So if your cool hat/band shirt hasn't gotten you shot yet, a trans ally pin ain't likely to either.

Going from the city to the midwest I was stuck by how much was different in terms of lifestyle, transportation and communication. However the most surprising thing was that I didnt notice people were any different. Everyone forgets that the opinions, wants, and views are tied to environment and that until you see how another lives, you can't be an ally. No experiences means you cant even begin to acknowledge your own privileges. Shout out to one of the best gun channels out there. We all need you here. ✊

It's also super important not just to know when to be provocative, but _how_ to be provocative. Too often I see people online and IRL say or do things so inflammatory that it ends up drawing more negative attention towards the ones they're trying to protect. I know it can feel really good to tell off a bigot, but remember that it's not about your own personal satisfaction. It's about making someone's life easier. Don't give them more rocks to carry.

Brandon had to run as a Republican if he wanted to win. He would have lost even harder as a "third-party" candidate and he would have gotten negative support if he tried to run as a Democrat.
