The Pistol Grip Only Shotgun - The Perfect Home Defense Tool?

Mossberg revealed their new "Shockwave" PGO shotgun at SHOT Show 2017 and Ian questioned their home defense claims in this video:
kzbin.info/www/bejne/gp6mZIGim7qXY7c
We received a lot of comments that he was a bit harsh with his questions along with the recurring claim that the PGO shotgun is an excellent home defense weapon.
In this video we tested a PGO, a standard stocked shotgun and a SxS hammered coach gun on the clock via a few different scenarios to attempt to determine the best answer.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended Four ruffians break into my house "What the devil??" as I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle Blow a golf ball sized hole in the first man, he's dead on the spot Draw my pistol on the second man. Misses him entirely because it's a smooth bore and nails the neighbor's dog Have to resort to the cannon at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot "Tally ho lads!"...the grape shot shreds to men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms Fix my bayonet and charge the last rapscallion Man bleeds out waiting for police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up Just as the founding fathers intended

I bought a supernova for HD. The first gun I bought after my first, a Sig p320. With the Sig, I went to the range maybe 4 times a year to knock the rust off. So I got the supernova, and once I didn't think it'd need much practice, but I took it once and fell in love. For the first year, I probably made it to the range 45-50 times with it. It took me from a pragmatic owner who really only even got a firearm to flex my right, to a nut, but just with the supernova. I'd not go so far as to call myself a specialist, but I've been jokingly called the resident shotgun surgeon. definitely not your average response, but shotgun for home defense is fine and usually memed too much.

I think it is fairly valid to question whether the third guy would have the chance to even realize you only have two barrels. When two of my buddies just got blasted with a shotgun... Two things. One, the Shockwave grip is WAY more comfortable than the old vertical wrist breaker pistol grips. I've shot full power buck and slug with mine, no problem... and I'm not a hulk of a man. Second, in some states you are not permitted to have a loaded rifle or shotgun in your vehicle, but the not a shotgun Shockwave fits into an "other" category and gets you around the stupid laws.

No reason for a truck gun its 100x more likely to be stolen then actually use just carry a pistol
@smolkafilip
@smolkafilip 5 жыл бұрын
@@nattrejo6574 I would say that there are two reasons for a truck gun. 1) You spend a lot of time in your truck (possibly work out of your truck) AND you can't legally carry but you can "transport" a gun in your vehicle. In this case the gun stays with you so the odds of it being stolen are low. 2) As part of your work or daily life you drive into remote or secluded locations which are possible targets for burglary or squatters. If you pull up to let's say a shed on your land where you store farming equipment and you see the door is open, that rifle/shotgun in your car now sounds pretty sweet. In this case you likely do not live in a place where random people breaking into your car to steal your radio while you shop at Walmart are a likely threat. I do agree that the idea of you "fighting your way to your rifle with your pistol" which is most often associated with truck guns just doesn't apply to civilians fighting random profit motivated criminals.

Almost as confusing as British shotgun law in which a shotgun must have a minimum barrel length of 24 inches and be able to be loaded with a maximum of 3 shells unless it it held on a Firearms licence as opposed to a Shotgun licence, in which case it can have an unlimited magazine capacity (detachable mag or non detachable is OK) but unlike all other firearms such as rifles which are subject to a 11 3/4 inch barrel length, a shotgun must still retain the 24 inch minimum length (as obviously in the eyes of the legislators it is a far more dangerous weapon than a 11 3/4 inch 308) so yes, firearms laws everywhere are crazy when you look into them! Re the stock/no stock argument, I am with Ian's view a million percent. In South Africa in the 90's I carried a fully stocked shortened Benelli M1 with a 16 inch barrel as a car defence weapon (against car jackers who kill 90 per cent of their victims in SA even after they hand over the car cash and jewellery, so surrender is not an option) and it proved far more handy and quicker to 'come to arms' than my friends pistol griped 500 Mossy. It is also the reason I am still here to write this. If you are still reading then I am surprised that I am not boring the pants off you but the double barrel was an interesting prompt. In Britain we use side by sides and over and under guns which are always ejectors and often assisted openers for speed because on an organised game shoot we will often fire 500 to 1000 shells a day at high (60 yard plus) driven game. A pump or auto is useless compared to a pair of matched guns and an experienced loader working a a team which allows continuous stained fire. That is a test these guys should do but they would need ejectors not stage coach guns!

Britishshooter Oh man sorry =( Even in strict US States like New York you don’t need to register shotguns or rifles as long as the shotgun barrel is 18 or more inches and the rifle is 16 or more. And that’s the worst of the 50 states. And on the other end you have Arizona where there are few restrictions on gun ownership and sales. You don’t need a permit to purchase anything. The state doesn’t require ownership registration. And you can carry a handgun, either concealed or openly, without a permit. Those and other factors earned it the top spot on Guns & Ammo’s list of gun-friendly states. It ranked 47 out of 50 (with 50 being the weakest gun laws) on the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence’s state scorecard.

I've always been a fan of a standard stocked pump action shotgun as perfect for home defense & thought the pistol grips stupid but I'm pretty swayed by the double barreled coach gun as even if you have 3 intruders trying to steal your stuff I think shooting even one of them is likely to make the others get the hell out of Dodge. I mean if you have enemies who send assassins after you then sure you'll want more rounds but I've yet to encounter that problem in my life.

I used to shoot 12 bore shotguns a lot. I have to say, the third intruder would have to be completely insane to still be there after his two mates get blown away, not just because of the huge holes in them but also the amount of noise in a confined space. I would prefer the double barrelled over anything that needed thought to recharge if you didn't use it regularly and you were in a high stress environment.

Double-barreled shotguns are very popular here in Austria since pump-action shotguns are banned. They only require being 18 or older and having them registered on your name. Semi-automatic shotguns are completely legal, but you've got to do a 3 hour gun-safety course that consists of shooting and a instructor telling you how not to accidentally shoot yourself or someone else and a visit at the psychologist so you get the Waffenbesitzkarte (the permission for handguns, semi-auto rifles and semi-auto shotguns). The great thing is we don't have any restrictions on magazine capacity, still most people buy a double-barrel since Austria is soooo extremely safe, the risk of a home invasion is minimal and not worth the effort of getting the Waffenbesitzkarte. I'm proud to be Austrian and not German their situation with guns is terrific. Austria= #1 country of Europe

There were some incidents involving pump-actions in a short period of time back in the late 90's, the reaction was just stupid. I'd always prefer a wound by fmj over sjhp. Luckily many people don't give a f*** about it and just use, sell or buy fmj to everyone.

Living in Brazil and being held at gun point inside my own house once taught me how much of a coward a home invader is. This kind of people don't want any confrontation, they're not looking for enemies they're looking for victims, just look up some security camera footage specialy from Brazil, when there are 2 or 3 bad guys as soon as a shot is fired at one of them the rest scatter.

ArthurAlcantara that’s if they are looking for money or something small. A drugged out rapist or murderer won’t care about being shot

"Nothing is a 100% 1-shot stop" I disagree. The M79 would be. Nobody's gonna keep going after a 40mm HEDP hit.

I heard a vietnam vet talking about an ambush one time where there was a VC so drugged up that he took about a dozen rounds of 5.56, plus a 40mm straight to the chest that punched a fist sized hole clean through his torso, after which he turned and ran off into the jungle before dying.

I would honestly not be surprised if it was the GIs who were drugged up, that being Vietnam.

What I learned from this is that a tactical bathrobe like the one they are wearing is the perfect accessory to a shotgun because it holds a lot of extra shot-shells in a convenient location for a fast reload.

And... COVERTLY!!! Could even sling the shockwave under the bathrobe for a REAL surprise.

So what I'm getting from this is the best option is actually a semi-auto shotgun with a full stock. Because it removes the element of the pump from the stress of the situation. Also the amount of disrespect towards the pistol grip shotgun after you start to hate shooting it is really funny.

I would like to see this done in a shoot house around corners. The whole point of tactical shotgun (pistol grip / shockwave) is clearing rooms or navigating tight spaces. A wide open space doesn't compare to the hallway corner leading to my bedroom. That said, this is still a very useful and convincing demonstration.

I think pump action is slightly faster, and multi barell is obviously even faster.
