Thank you very much for the easy to follow tutorials and setup guidance for these excellent units. I now have these in my vehicles as opposed to Radio Tone portables that all the drivers were loosing and damaging. We also linked them through a Zello Gateway (Server running Zello Client) into an existing UHF commercial analogue frequency so we have complete backwards compatibility for our contractors who are using the UHF equipment. It's a great little channel you've got here and I am very glad to say you've gained another sub. Thank you and 73's from Australia.

Actually the people telling you these aren't radios are wrong. Definition of a radio is "the transmission and reception of electromagnetic waves of radio frequency, especially those carrying sound messages." Therefore it is a radio. It uses radio waves. A cb is a radio and a walkie talkie is a radio this too is a radio. Its wireless and push to talk.

Hi, just like to say thanks. I had heard about these things but had never seen one and had never seen Zello. Your review here was just the thing to convince me to get a couple of these "radios" My Dad is an M0 and lives in a flat where he can't have an antenna. We have tried lots of things to get him back on air on VHF without success. Your clear, simple, no-nonesense review of this unit and the demo on Zello have proven extremely useful and shown me the way. Thanks for taking the effort to make these vids. ill look you up once the "radios" arrive. Cheers M6OXP

I got my TM-7 yesterday (and the RadioTone RT4). Build quality of TM-7 is excellent. Audio is loud and clear. Text input is a pain. It's a hit and miss due to the very small characters. Not a big problem though since I just have to do it once during device and app setups. Mic is solid however, the clicking noise of the PTT switch is also being recorded when I'm transmitting.

Interesting looking device and all noted about it not being a 'radio' ;-) For what it's worth, my own personal opinion is that Amateur Radio has a number of blurred lines now with regards what has been traditionally known in the past as 'true' radio, and technologies like DMR, for example, which employs 'real' radio, along with assistance from the internet etc. Again, for what it's worth, I feel that all these technologies are just a continuation and a logical progression in the hobby. I well remember critics of things like Packet Radio (lots more examples of other modes in the past too, I'm sure) back in the day that it 'wasn't proper radio' (whatever that was). Again, new technologies being advanced in the hobby and I would argue, all part of the ethos that the hobby is about 'self training and learning' , and in that respect, if it looks like a radio and acts like a radio, then you could argue, that it is radio? ;-) Thanks for the video
@RingwayManchester7 жыл бұрын
Mate, agree with everything you've said there. I think it depends what people see as 'radio'. To me it's chatting to my mates over a PTT device, for me, this fits the bill and I can eff and blind on there whereas I can't on 2 and 70 LOL. Did I mention it's NOT a radio? haha Cheers!
@jaymachik7 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a radio, it's a 1.9 or 2.4 GHz digital radio. No it's not on Amateur Radio frequencies, but it's still a digital radio.

Martin (Gw0ouv} Thanks for the vid id heard on the ham bands about these devices lets call them a handy device for situations where you cant errect an antenna. I Live in a flat upstairs flat ive managed to get a endfed wire out here it runs through the trees behind my flat, however my interest in these devices is that quite often i find my noise level on hf gets me down does,nt it get us all down so these devices would give a little break from *hf noise fatigue* - be handy just has another means to chat ive been licenced since march 1991 ive had great times on hf and i rarely transmit these days but i do listen a lot in the early hours {insomnia} so maybe ill get one of these for my 62nd birthday on march 20th id use it via my internet at home here maybe go mobile but unlikly anyway its not radio its just a mobile network handset *radio it aint !! most amateurs will shy away as its not real radio but aye we all know that its just another device to chat to fellow amateurs when conditions are poor on hf well why not i say !

@darkshadow9877 жыл бұрын
The sun is out! Not sure I ever seen it in your vids 😉 Just like everything else in America, we seem resistant to adopting new technologies... These (any Zello PTT) are hard to come by and generally about twice the price when you find them. I've been a long time user of Zello to keep in touch with my family when out of GMRS repeater range (still haven't pulled the trigger on my ham ticket). I use my Nexus and a Bluetooth PTT mic in my car. Very handy for instant contact. Nice to have a "voice version of IRC" too when out on the road. I would love to see more devices like this and the RT3 here in the US for hobby use.

I've been looking at these for awhile now, and (budget permitting) would love to get them (both the RT3/4, as well as the TM-7). However, unfortunately, they are currently only GSM for the mobile network. Where I live, it's CDMA only, so I would be limited to WiFi... not very useful for mobile use. So for now, I have to stick to the smart phone for Zello. As CDMA isn't used much outside of America, it's doubtful that a CDMA-capable version will be available anytime soon. Still hoping, though. Excellent video, by the way!

An interesting bit of kit Lewis, maybe one day someone will produce a hybrid mobile radio with VHF/UHF and 3G/4G connections, wouldn't that be nice. Have you tried an external antenna to see if it gives a more solid connection ?, the available ones seem to be quite expensive, but it could be an interesting construction project. I operate on Zello using a Cat S30 phone and the PC application on a laptop. It will be interesting to see what the Emergency Services will be using for in car mobile kit, when the ESN comes into use, maybe something similar but more rugged. Samsung have been awarded a contract to supply rugged smartphones for the hand held devices.

@battlestarone6 жыл бұрын
this is where you have to be careful with importing,,,looks good on website be vat and duty and import tax can make it not worth while coupled with the fact you have no warranty its a risk,,,i have seen these units for sale from uk sellers for £185,,,not as cheap as the Chinese websites but least you are covered for warranty for I think 2yrs by eu law,,it seems you have to be very aware of import charges being appied and when this happens s it often not worth the hassle importing on your own,,,the reason uk seller can pass saving on is they order 50 units saving on shipping charges,,passing this saving onto you even though the breakdown per unit becomes very cheap for them it gives them profit and make it worth there while to import these units that seem to be selling very well just now.

If a much Cheaper SmartPhone can do Zello, I wonder why one would pay ~$550 for a Zello-specific device. There are ~$100 microphones (for SmartPhones), if it's a mic., that one wants. (Why not just use Bluetooth?) The tiny screen seems too small to read, without a magnifier. OK, most smartphones don't accept an External Antenna, but 4G coverage is improving regularly. Does on-screen PTT (sans mic.) have an internal mic.? If it does, I'd bet it takes in vehicular noise. (Yaesu FTM-10 (S: Low Power; R: High Power) has a No-External-Mic option, but it also has a tiny mic. inside the removable remote head, so car noise needn't go with user's voice on Transmit. The FTM-10 is a dual-band transceiver w/ wideband receive+scan, as well as AM/FM broadcast - if you can interface in a decent AM radio, eg, via a decent splitter... It was made for motorcycles & also used in auto racing. It's Not a current model, but may be found on used markets, eg, Ham Club Buy+Sell events, or eBay. Rugged enough for 4WD applications, but waterproofing may be limited to the head, eg, in high power R version. Read spec's before choosing sub model. Oh, it's Not a Network Radio.) And to our Reviewer, I think the vendor who offers your viewers 10% Off seems to have pulled one off on you, as they win, but you do not share in the win. Look after your own interests, as well as making a fair + balanced Review, unless you're a wealthy guy, who doesn't need another income-stream. ;-) If a vendor won't give you info on a product you're reviewing, unless you agree to review it cost-free, the maker will (or should). Hams, by the way, help each other by sharing big reports, mods & usage tips, eg, on eHam.net & other quality sites. You don't need to be a Ham to use or contribute to it, & a review you put there stays there for all to access. A friend suggests: Just use an SmartPhone, with easy-to read large-screen, running Zello. We've got XiaoMi's Mi Max with 6.44" screen, & we're considering its first (of 2, so far) successors: Au$ 215 (from AliExpress) for a "Mi Max 2" (same 6.44" screen-size, higher capacity battery for even longer battery life, slightly slower SnapDragon processor... If speed matters to you, maybe see if Mi Max 3 uses a faster one). So, with that 6.44" screen phone, you can have two (2) Mi Max 2's [w/ 4 GB RAM + 64 GB Storage ] for Less than a costly TM7, TM8 or a lot of other Network Radios, that I priced. (If they're all priced in US$, the SmartPhone is an even Better deal, IMO. (Oh, if 6.44" is too large for your shirt pocket maybe look at XiaoMi Redmi 5 (or current 6) Plus (w/ 5.99" screen), that records 4K... See? You're giving up a LOt, by buying into a maker's (or vendor's) meme, IMO. As 5G fast approaches, this - & other 4G Network Radios will eventually be "dumped" when 5G arrives. If you Must buy a Network Radio. Buy at the right time + price: Defer your purchase & Save, is my advice. ;~)

Such devices truly ARE radios. They're NOTHING more than trancievers that just happens to have been SDR'd into a cell phone. They're are real computers too which just happens to be running Android. And by using software (that is not SDR'd) you can turn them into VoIP based walkie talkies. That is what I call irony.

think device will sell well,,,,,,it the way forward for many large company's and I am surprised a ptt system has not be adapted by cellular companies in the eu by now,,i know orange tried but I don't think it took off some years ago,,,,the company I work for has a lasge fleet and this I am told is the way we are going with our coms dumping our large and expensive band 3 network,,,will is damage ham radio,,i don't think so,,i see it as just another tool,,,it still radio,,,it uses radio,it just not part of the ham radio band plan,,,,but for £5 a month your getting access to a multimillion pound trunked cellular network with this rather nice bit of kit and its cousins.
