The GPS setting and calibration was probably set to some other countries. You should have reprogram it using a laptop and internet. Also, after few turns of the tail rotor it stopped then it started to turn backwards.

I'm just not too far away from you outside of HTN, WV. I am a seasoned intermediate collective pitch rc hobbyist-worked my way up into the blade models to the 450 size collective etc. I was very excited about this chopper.....had 1 single great flight on the v3 huey/ 2nd flight was hovering to show my brother at a family function and all of a sudden chopper went left uncontrollably........home switch did not solve.....had to hit the off switch and it came down hard. I ordered new gear had a week later /repaired it as damage suprisingly wasn't too severe./ went thru the setup etc/all a go with gps and receiver prompts/colors/-the esc was very hot and no spool up......there are issues with this version/ so don't blame yourself. I believe there are issues with the esc as well as the connecting rods/degree of binding and popping off.... as some have pointed out. Too many issues so far reported.

For all new to helis: You should mount the tail rotor without the main blades and verify you can yaw the heli correctly on the ground and also that the gyro corrects in the right direction. To test the gyro hold the heli in such a way that you don't get hit by the tailblades and yaw the heli by physically moving it. You should feel it resist the yaw. If the gyro accelerates the yaw then the correction is backwards.

🤙 Great advice, many thanks. I did this yesterday several times before taking up my Flywing Bell 206. Everything was textbook perfect for the maiden flight in 10 mph winds. Hopefully they give this one another whirl. Had a blast flying mine! 😎

RTF doesn’t mean RTF. Everything should be looked over before a maiden, and double checked. Also always perform a preflight check. Learn to fly the basics without the assistance of the flight controller just in case,😉. This could of been prevented. The important thing is that no one was injured. Yeah I’m late to the party! Lol

GLAD you never took this down. Long time FW user. This V3 Huey got absolutely DESTROYED in the comments section of the product showcase video by MotionRC. I mean nuke'd..so bad that they REMOVED the video a week later. I wonder if A) FW asked them to remove it or B) its because they are seller of them. Good to see there is someone who still has some kind of a moral compass in this day and age.

I’ve always said Motion plays dirty, because they do. Interesting to know they’ll delete comments and even videos if they can’t handle the truth! Did you know this company has offered to pay us to remove the video? They’ve said they’d send another helicopter too, but only if we agreed to remove this. I think it’s important for people to know the truth, and so many will sell out or back down when challenged with doing the right thing. Like Motion! ⚓️

Don't worry. You did everything right. The tail motor failed. Not your fault. I own several Flywing FW450Ls. I own that one and crashed several of them. Flywing has quality control issues. I fly them often and have crashed several times due to manufacturers defects. No worries. All you could do is flip the off switch once back down. I crashed the Bell 206 when gps failed. I delayed a second to flip that switch too. Still repairing it now. No worries.
@coriscotupi Жыл бұрын
Tail rotor was turning the wrong way, it's motor was mis-wired. Evidence: As seen at 02:52, the tail rotor was turning the other way around. Not only because by turning the way it did it had its top blade moving forward and bottom blade moving aft (contrary to what is generally used), but especially because turning this way the blades are obviously turning backwards, i.e., the blades are advancing leading edge-first, as can be seen by the blade shape at 06:14. The tail rotor motor is wired incorrectly. To fix it: if it is a brushed motor, swap its two wires. If it is brushless, swap any two of its 3 wires. Regarding the crash itself, if you did the connection yourself, then that's that. If, however, the motor came pre-wirerd, then someone at the factory is to blame and you're in for a replacement. Here's one check that could be done prior to flying those ready-built helis for the first time: remove ALL of the rotor blades (main and tail), and briefly spin up the motors, verifying that they in fact turn in their appropriate directions. Mistakes do happen, and this simple check can save the day.
@yodaiam1000 Жыл бұрын
I am no heli expert but it looks like the tail motor was wired in the wrong direction. The good news is that you can learn from every crash. I think in the future it might make sense to test the motor direction before installing the main blades. I know how bad it can feel but don't be discouraged. The factory should have made sure the wires were right for the tail motor but it doesn't hurt to check. BTW, my hindsight is 20/20.
@Flight6677 Жыл бұрын
I did not see you do any pre-flight checks. Most important is to check the response of the gyro - in your case its looks like you had the tail response reversed. You also need to check the gyro response for aileron and pitch. Again, its absolutely the most important thing when maidening a helicopter of this size.
@davidlevine2682 Жыл бұрын
It was definitely a teal rotor issue. Whether it was installed backwards at the factory or the motor was turning it the wrong way that’s what made it spin out of control.

My flight experience was far different than yours, but I have to say that your video made me go slow and do things correctly. So... from that aspect, your video had a positive impact on my experience. For years I was an editor for a couple of digital car magazines. I was always amazed by the keyboard warriors that never had anything positive to add, nor did they put out any content of their own. The people that hate on this or other planes because they aren't "real" helicopters or whatever... do nothing more than drive people away from the hobby. I appreciate that you put out content that is interesting and helpful. If it helps anyone that gets involved in the hobby to have fun... then it is worth it. Keep putting out more content. There are plenty of us that enjoy and benefit from what you do.

Sorry for your crash. Something was defiantly wrong with the tail (not spinning or turning in the wrong direction). I’m not sure what you did or checked before this flight, but you should never take off that quickly on a maiden flight. I’ve been flying RC helis for over 30 years, and I always take off very slowly on my first flight to make sure everything is set up correctly. I will admit, I’ve had the same issue you did with 1 or 2 helis on their maidens, where I had the tail gyro correcting in the wrong direction, but I was only light on the skids when I realized it was about to spin out of control, so I could stop it before anything bad happened.

It seemed to behave like the tail gyro part of your flybarless system was reversed. That could be a flaw caused at the factory when they set it up. I don't believe this was pilot error, as I've seen you fly helis before with no issues.
@Hoomi2 Жыл бұрын
My suspicion is something wrong with the tail rotor motor or ESC, and the tail rotor ESC was the source of the smoke. The battery, from what I could see in the video, did not look like it had suffered catastrophic failure. As others have said, the way it was spinning was indicative of insufficient tail rotor power to counteract the main rotor torque. When it was sitting on the ground, the friction of the skids on the pavement was enough to keep it from spinning, but when you lifted off, there was no longer any resistance.

I think you might have missed the orientation/initialization procedure for the h1 controller. Well since it's crashed maybe you can get a kensen receiver fix it and learn the prodeure to set it up for your dsmx radio. You could also strap it down to a table ir build a test stand to confirm your setup is good. Thanks for sharing your experience. I've been looking at getting one of these myself. I've also watched John Salt's setup on the the h1 receiver with his radiomaster setup. He makes some good points.

OK I just saw captain drone do a review on this. If you have a version 3 you didn't do anything wrong. They may not have correctly oriented the gps at the factory. He was using a version 3 and said it didn't require the orientation procedure out of the box.

@envitech02 Жыл бұрын
HI, engineer and private ilot here. 1:51 From plan view (i.e. from the top) the rotor is supposed to spin clockwise. In doing so, the resultant torque will try to turn the tail anticlockwise. To counteract the torque, the tail rotor must try to blow air. 0:42 from the angle of the blades, to blow air, the rotor must turn anticlockwise. However, at 2:53 we can see the tail rotor spin clockwise. So, not only the tail rotor NOT counteracting the torque, but also contributing to the torque. Therefore, this is 100% NOT your fault, but I believe the manufacturer miswired the tail rotor. This is a manufacturing defect so I think if you contact the manufacturer, they should be obliged to either repair it, or send you a new unit. Q.E.D.
@stuartthurstan Жыл бұрын
You are of course, quite correct, however it seems to me (watching the video frame by frame) that although tail does in fact start initially in the wrong direction it then appears to stop 2:53 and restart in the correct direction. Not easy to see though because of the speed of rotation, camera shutter speed and playback framerate. It may just be an optical effect. Clearly though, something wasn't right with the tail or gyro.
@envitech02 Жыл бұрын
@@stuartthurstan Yes, it started in the wrong direction. That it seemed to spin again the correct direction I believe is an optical illusion. A correctly built rotor, propeller or turbine system should not be able to spin both directions.

Built and adjusted by myself and flown on its back and loops with no effort. Believe me.... I was blown away by how much better they handle.
@video80634 Жыл бұрын
Sorry man. That's heartbreaking. My guess is something with the tail rotor. The tail rotor counters the torque spin of the main rotor. And when it spins like it did, especially right after it lifted, leads me to believe it was the tail rotor.
@davidpiper3652 Жыл бұрын
I suspect the tail rotor brushless motor had the connections crossed and was running backwards, it would be very inefficient and sucking instead of blowing. Throttle up it would have had no tail control. Many other videos on KZbin show this helicopter flying really nicely. But you guys are safe, that's all that matters really.
@TheRcSaylors Жыл бұрын

Looking at the video of it starting It looked like the tail motor was going the wrong way but if that was the case I think it would have spun on the ground, but maybe the heli was very heavy and so held in place by friction. If tail motor was going the right way it will be the gyro that was set up wrong. The tail rotor is installed the same way as other reviews and looks correct to me , I think it will just be the wires were wrong on tail motor.

Ok I can confirm your tail blade is spinning the wrong way, I played back your video in slow motion and can see the tail blade spin in the wrong direction. This means the wires on the tail motor are wrong, and this was most likely done at the factory. If anyone else watches this video please check your tail blade rotation before flight, it should spin CCW or spin up to the main blades looking from the right side of the helicopter.

Like said in the comments, looks like the rotor was running backwards or the gyro was correcting in the wrong direction. Usually you can tell when it spins up, but if there is good grip on the ground it might not be obvious until its airborne. A slower lift off might have revealed it a little earlier and might have saved it. Might! Dont be hard on yourself. Also next time pull the main rotor blades and run it up to make sure the tail is correcting properly. Don't sweat it, I've screwed this up with more than 1 heli and numerous tricopters (same concept). Now whoever gets this will double check.

You are 100% correct with your diagnosis. The H1 flight controller is set up and calibrated via a PC download. It is very curious that the exact same thing happened with that helicopter on another rc channel, the advantage is that the other one fell on the grass and did not suffer as much damage; what this other youtuber did was reverse the propellers and the helicopter worked fine afterwards, regards.

Thanks for posting this, after watching & watching it sure looks like there was a problem right off the start. It started to autorotate at lift off so I'd be interested in what the manufacturer said about it, it really looks like factory defect. Hopefully you can post a follow up video to keep us updated because $700 is a lot of money for some people and your experience with it could save others from a bad situation. Have a great day you guys and keep flying.

So I checked your video against others of this same V3 UH-1, and one thing is different. At 3:06 in your video, the heli jumps sideways a little bit, and the tail rotor sound/noise goes away. In other videos, the tail rotor sound is constant after that little jump, AND you can hear the constant RPM adjustments to the tail rotor as the controller/gyro hold the heli stable. Yours NEVER does that. So for some reason the tail rotor slowed down quite a bit below what it needed to be at.... It's like the controller wasn't sending the proper signal to the tail rotor ESC.

As an old school heli pilot. I always ensure that the servos controlling the rotors, tail, pitch and yaw are operating correctly. I also move the tail boom from side to side to ensure that the gyro is working correctly. This crash looks like a lack of power to tail rotor, or gyro error.

Capt. Drones flew great. I think someone didn't program your chopper right in China.

I thought it sounded "wongky" a second before it took off!! To me, the binding process seems more tedious than usual. I think you got a bad item!! But WOW...that was a GREAT crash!! Thanks Saylors for your HONESTY!! This one will become a CLASSIC video!! Sorta sorry about the helicopter. 💟👍😘

that tail rotor isn't just there for looks. you need to start applying counter-rotational force before the skids even lose contact with the ground. whether it's a blade or a jet of air, you have to counter the rotational torque of the main blades and motor.

I just checked mine. Looks like your tail rotor was running backwards. Manufacturers error!!

As a long time FW user, I took another close look at this one and my NTSB conclusion (haha) is that this is typical FW junk that could have killed someone. The tail rotor was spinning CW, should have been spinning CCW. The Amass connectors they use (XT30/XT60) for the ESC to the tail motor only fit one way. This tells me the lack of QC at FW struck again and the soldering was reversed.

I'm sorry to see that happened. I have one. I flew it a few times, no problem. Now, the esc is toasted. I'm waiting for a replacement part.

Hmmmm, this is one of the reasons I quit flying helis...the occasional crash was usually painful in terms of damage and time to repair. It always reminded me of the sound of a cash register or ATM exploding🙂

Hahaha, that is absolutely true. Once many years I had my family at Disney World and every ride in the children's amusement area seemed to be broken or malfunctioning, but one thing remained operational with no mishaps was the cash registers.....😮

I started flying RC 3 years ago after a very long hiatus of nearly 50 years. Military, family, work, and a whole host of things required my attention rather than RC. I found a somewhat local AMA club and latched onto an incredibly talented member who took me under his wing. I bought an Apprentice STS, flew about a dozen buddy box flights with him and have been a solo flier ever since. What I didn't tell him was that I purchased the GPS accessory and several weeks later he noticed the plane doing that telltale dance and reminded me that he had told me from the beginning not to buy it after I owned up having it. The result after the maiden takeoff with the GPS was akin to what Nate experienced and I could not disengage the GPS. It circled higher and higher then abruptly came in for a near full throttle landing that turned into multiple touch-and-go attempts. My mentor and another friend also tried to disengage the GPS amongst other control inputs with no luck. It finally aborted the landing and went straight into the largest tree in the woods. Not a whole lot of damage, except for the GPS ----I threw that as far as I could into the woods.

Having crash a few RC helis myself and repaired them. I had one crash that resulted with the tail striking first. I replaced the tail boom and main blades. I went to fly the heli after repairing it a few weeks later. When I powered up and started to take off, it started to go into a crazy spin like yours. Much like you, I throttle down and watch it land hard on the pavement breaking the landing rail. After going over what happened and reading other peoples experience with heli crashes. For my situation, it was the tail motor that was no longer able to keep up with the speed of the main rotors. Once the main rotors went up in speed, the tail motor was no longer able to keep the heli stable. Thus causing the heli to spin in the direction of the rotor blades direction. For me, I had to replace the tail motor and that solved my problem. So my guess is, you have a defective tail motor on your heli. If not, it could be the programming on the speed controller too that has caused your heli to fail from the start.

It’s definitely not your fault. I’ve built and flown many scale helis using the Align T-rex 450 platform and I can tell you that the heli you have there is defective. For one, there was no tail authority, which is why it just went to a tail spin like that. Secondly, the throttle curve did not let you spool up smoothly enough to make sure that all of your controls are working properly before take off. Also, if you installed the main rotor blades incorrectly, that heli wouldn’t have taken off like that. I think something was wrong with the electrical system or programming on that thing. You should get your money back for that. If I was the manufacturer, I’d be embarrassed with that quality control. Those things are not cheap and I would expect more fail-safe for the price.
@robertpletcher3950 Жыл бұрын
All flywing helis do not have throttle curves. You setup 1 throttle % in the H1 software.

There is no doubt that something failed on this helicopter.The blades were on right,the setup was the same as others have done on first flight.This should be replaced by the manufacturer.

Looks like the tail rotor was wired backwards in China. Not your fault. It kept going faster and faster because it was trying to correct for the spin but being wired backwards had the opposite effect. ⚓️

To be honest was surprised how calm you stayed ,and you handled it really well ,helicopters can be very very dangerous as you know would be interested to find out what caused it , didn't look like you did anything wrong at all . Thanks for the video 👍👍👍

Hitting stop switch most likely would not have saved it...if you used a large board in a grassy field it may have helped though...

Hello: Your flying skills are very good, and the damage of the helicopter has been greatly reduced. Repeatedly play the video in slow motion. It may be that the tail rotor motor is reversed. Please check the rotation direction of the tail motor! If this is the case, if you buy the RTF finished version, you should be able to claim compensation from the manufacturer!
