There were so many GREAT ideas here. The fighter build puzzled me, until it totally bought time for that arty defending the base. Then that same fighter went nuts down on the south island causing headaches without even fighting anything XD

As a casual player, I saw this map and immediately went "C'mon, this is THE ONE MAP a piperunner could actually move somewhere, someone has to use it". And it finally happened. I'm so happy

That was an actually insane game. Plague's timing with their units was really really good. The only questionable one was maybe the missile unit but I can get the impetus. Like you're trying to prevent yourself from having to deal with too many air targets and guarantee that airport is locked. I'm not a Standard player but just the way those expensive units were used and countered was just phenomenal. Sick as hell map too.

I don't know where Lawrence even blundered or made a mistake, it just felt like Plague played better. Plague built mechs, so infantry on the weak side was the right move. Plague tech'd up on weak side and Lawrence rushed him and crushed him, yet somehow Plague got a piperunner and got the base first, like his understanding of the dynamics was so much more amazing. Or maybe it's because it was so unconventional that Lawrence couldn't adjust to this whole mech and pipe runner business, I don't think Starflash or Go7 or Incuggarch would build 3 mechs and a pipe runner in this map.

I think this map just needs innovation to win matches. Almost every single conventional Advance Wars tactic is obsolete: -Build anti-air for air units > death sentence for the weak side, less useful in this map because there's rivers in the middle, pipes to juke, and waters for flanking heaven -Tanks as main force and focus strong side > Isolation of the strong and weak side that nullifies any front shifting means tank spam is always answered by teching up to medium, which encourages copters or infantry wall plus artillery for cheap tech up counters, of which tank spam from two base is not so strong. And even after winning strong side, the island is still doing nothing if the pipe seams are not destroyed and the airport is neglected, to the point of a deathball literally being a sitting duck in the strong side like at the end of the video -Ranged Anti-Air is useless > As shown by the first point, AA is deceptively restricted, bases are near sea which are air unit domain. Missiles lock down air space from behind pipes, and Air Carriers are the only thing stopping air units trying to swarm the little island with the comm tower

really great game to see ! I'm wondering something : while the mech chain had little apparent impact, is it possible that it made the difference in deterence? It IS a bad play in term of speed, BUT this weak side suddenly can't tech into tanks to hold a bit longer. at the same time DoP could defend his south with his arty because he didn't invest massively north in tanks (because he forced the tank chain south beforehand).

No! What happend day 10? The medium tank could have been saved from being hit with proper inf position by Plague (no attacking with his inf). The opening was so good, I think it was a major blunder. But let's see the rest of the game. Edit: k, I was wrong, inf could have killed either way.

I think building black boat on the small half-island is a viable opener, and I will die on this hill. I understand 7500 is a big investment, but this boat allows you to get a property, which means it earns itself in over 8 days, and it lets you transport infantry to the enemy's 1 base and com tower island, which is a huge distraction, and slows down their momentum. I think most pro players just don't build the black boat because this is the "meta", but I'd love to see some higher level players trying the black boat opener and seeing if it can work., because I believe there's some potential there.

The cost in tempo is too high. This is a race after all, so it doesnt matter it pays off in the long run. Although, I am with you and I would love to see it working. I remember Go7 messing with this opener idea.

Maybe you could demonstrate it yourself? Make a public game and see who bites - try it against lower-level randos to work out the kinks, then ask a higher-level player on discord for a match after you've practiced it.

Also adding, i think that mech spamming is MORE than a meme. Sasha chose to build a tank on the weak side that is inevitably overrun, so the mech is compensating the loss of firepower on the strong side, in case Hawke responds with tank on weak side too. It is a repellant, so to speak. And the mech is absolute anti land vehicles because Sasha kept spamming infantries to wall them up and slowly inching towards the weak side base, building a tank is actually useless since no way it can break the infantry wall, and that is all the guarantee Sasha needed. Also the mech spamming preventing anything being built on the weak side means Sasha can build whatever she wants for other goals, which is in this video is to dump everything to sneakily secure air superiority.

Plague going against the standard early builds 100% benefited him. Makes it awkward and difficult to figure out exactly what his plan is. Especially on this map that has like the 3 or so typical build orders. He just threw that away and threw curve balls nonstop instead.

This was the most incredible game I've ever seen. Obviously plague is an absolute master. Reminder that Plague is or was number one in Tiny Wars, based on the more complex and therefore more impressive AW Days of Ruin. More people should be playing days of ruin PVP. So underrated, the tactics are so much better in that game and fog of war is INSAAAAAAAAAAAANE. Edit: Just have to add, both players played nearly perfectly... it was mesmerizing to watch! Good game!

@@Keith-rd2uh There's more unit variety, mechs are viable in that game, and there's a recon/infantry hybrid unit called Bike with Tyre based movement but able to capture. There's several tiers of tanks, not just two, naval combat is much better as well, there's a torpedo boat for transporting infantry which can also take down bigger ships but only has 3 shots. There's an extra air unit called a duster which can destroy copters with a machinegun and can also attack some land units for small damage. Copters are not OP in that game, they still do fair damage but they're no longer indestructible unless you have anti air. Most CO powers are limited to a condition and also have trade offs where you have to consider using them or keeping the charge, because the charge gives you extra effects near your CO unit, which you have to deploy to use. There's just too much in that game that's way better than this, but it's so underappreciated.

I think the mech chain was a pretty good play. Plague had to wait several turns for his infantry which were capping properties hither and yon could coalesce and bring the unit count advantage to bear on Lawrence’s one base. And fighting hard with vehicles on Plague’s own weak side dictated that (almost) nothing but infantry would be there to oppose Plague’s strong side push.

I was showing this video to someone interested in AW, and I'd stopped at about the 2/3s of the way mark to explain various stuff to them, features of the map and so on. We got to Ports and I went on a lengthy rant about the problems with naval units, why they don't really fit in or participate much with the rest of the game, and how they're a niche feature that no-one would really use in seriously playo n this kinda map. Cue the Aircraft Carrier and Battleship. 💣🤯 Genius game.
