@sourhour3403 Good catch! this is a really late reply but I’m a former detective so I had to comment. I’m happy you noticed that, and it’s actually a real interrogation technique that the FBI teaches. It’s called a “pregnant pause” and it serves the purpose you assumed it did. At the moment of confrontation they basically have a natural tendency to fill the awkward silence, often with information that explains the evidence before you finish confronting them about it. But due to the adrenaline dump and lack of prep time, they almost always give an inconsistency, a lie, or accidental confession (excited utterance) by mistake, leaving the interviewer with more evidence than before. (I started typing to explain the technique but started explaining the nuances and eventually ended up writing something that resembled a published scholarly article, so if you’re interested you can find out more online lol)

One small thing When you load into a zombie game solo, you play as one of 4 characters. Rarely does this matter in speed runs but in shadows of evil you must get a certain character, Nero, because he can let you perform a certain step (upgraded swords) much faster then every other character. Which means runs must get Nero and reign drops in order to get past round 1, and it’s why soe takes a lot of luck.

At this point why not just do what the bioshock infinite runners did and just tweak the settings so you always get Nero and perfect order gobblegums? Imagine if we had a sprint but you can only accept times if the guy successfully calls 10 coin flips in a row or something. At that point is it really a speed competition or just who averages out to be luckier because that means by default they get more practice and attempts?

A lot of speedrun communities specifically mod out RNG like that because there's literally no skill in it and it's just a waste of time having to reset runs because of it. For clarity for those that don’t know the gobblegums shown in the match start screen are: Reign drop-spawns every type of power-up in the game, nuclear winter-spawns a nuke power-up which kills all spawned enemies on the map and heavily damages boss enemies (no effect during boss fights), wall power-which turns the gun you buy after getting it into its pack-a-punched version (its upgraded basically), perkaholic-every zombies player favourite gobblegum, this rare jewel grants the player all perks on the map, and finally anywhere but here, this is a common gobblegum, meaning every player has access to it after playing a while, it randomly teleports you to a random spot on the map after activating it, have I believe 2 activations.

So... 20% of runs make it past the first gobblegum, then, 50% of those make it past wave 5. That alone means that 10% of runs only make it through based on luck alone, not even counting all the optimal movements you need to make to get through the level. Thats kinda crazy imo.

These comments are so wierd to me. Every youtuber gets these "you got me through a rough time" comments. I first noticed them in Jordan Peterson comment sections, but they made sense since he's a bit of a "self-help" guru. But now I see them on random entertainment videos. No chance a random youtube game journalist gets you through a rough time. At most, he helped you forget about your troubles for 15 minutes every week or two.

@@Dee-nonamnamrson8718that’s a pretty silly take. Entertainment KZbinrs can collectively serve as an effective distraction from the sucky parts of life that someone may be experiencing in the moment. Even only 10-15 minutes from a few different KZbinrs every week or so can make a huge difference. It makes just as much sense that someone finds solace in entertainment as in a self help video

this just makes me sad man, zombies is something I know well and have been playing for about a decade now. I’m not a speedrunner myself, as I’m not nearly dedicated or skilled enough to be one, but being in the community for so long I know how much work goes into legitimate runs, and it makes me sad seeing that work undermined by cheaters

Work undermined? More like luck undermined with how heavily reliant it is on RNG.
@Sloth1166

@@melancholyentertainment I’m aware it’s heavily reliant on RNG, but the runners still have to put in an incredible amount of time and effort. Yes, a world record run is quite reliant on good RNG, but as an example I could get the best RNG possible on the map I’m most confident on, and still never even come close to world record. that’s all my point was

The devotion that speed runners have is astounding to me. Imagine loading that level up and running it over and over at 4 and a half minutes just quit out and do it again until u randomly get the right gumball. I wanna bang my head against a wall just thinking about it. Someone should make a documentary with some of the top tier guys and dig into their relentlessness

This is crazy to see this featured here, it's sad what happened as he was trusted in the community and many were happy for him (after getting WR) but it turned out he cheated. Thanks for covering this Karl, great video!
