I had two semesters of Music Theory and it showed me how much the relationship between music & mathematics goes even further in that like math, the basic tenants of music are fairly easy to grasp, but the more advanced you go it's truly like going from multiplication tables to calculus...

...but Rick, I only have six strings! Haha. I love this (what I'd call) advanced theory stuff. I really enjoy it. The math in music can sometimes be so complex, yet still remain ear candy, in context. Sharing - My favorite chord (on the guitar) is not a poly-chord per se, but it is the opening chord to Aja: BMaj9 - 7x864x (or 7x8644). For me, Steely Dan (as you've pointed out many times) is one of the best sources to learn what these kinds of chords sound like in context. Thanks for the lesson, Rick.

I feel so dumb listening to you talk, and then you play and I go, "oh, I understand that". Being self taught has it's short comings for sure. But at least I understand the information in context. I'm glad that you are putting this information out there, there might be hope that I understand some theory some day lol. Cheers

Hi Tone - I'm part of an initiative called "Jazz in Music Education" - I'd love to hear how your started out teaching yourself jazz - what videos or resources did you use? If you ended up here studying this stuff then perhaps there's a lot to be said for self-teaching. But whilst there are tons of useful videos at this fairly advanced level - what is there for beginners?

Wow, that's really cool! That funky F#/Csus --> Fm11 could also be D/C --> Fm11 (every note outside of the bass line resolves by half step), then chain them together counter-clockwise around the circle. D/C --> Fm11 --> C/Bb --> Ebm11 --> Bb/Ab --> Dbm11, etc. Pretty great stuff! You can voice it in such a way that the A in the very first D/C chord just walks down by half steps, and there's your connective tissue right there!

Lots of these in the Silent Hill 1 video game soundtrack. Having got used to this kind of thing from playing those games, I tend to consider stuff like this "horror style". But it can be insanely relaxing, as that piece you show in the video demonstrates! Since it sets up a context that allows for more range of dissonance, it's a bit like if you'd only heard songs at one volume before but then you heard one with dynamic range get loud, it would seem a lot louder at that part even if it weren't. Bit like that except for dissonance range rather than loudness range. Lovely stuff these things! I have used the unstretched x-cell once, although it did quickly resolve outward to other (decreasingly dissonant) combinations.

The last two piano compositions of yours I've liked very much. You need to package all of them into an album or separate youtubes for me to dl. @davidraiklen4521
@davidraiklen4521 4 жыл бұрын
Yanni is a good example, he actually does have some reading and writing skills and surrounds himself with expert musicians. I know this because some of my friends have worked on his albums and tours. Music is pretty collaborative and it really helps to read and write. Jacob Collier and Lindsey Stirling people you might check out who blend that self-taught feel with deep theory.
@leddygee1896
@leddygee1896 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidraiklen4521 I'm familiar with Lindsey Stirling, awesome talent. Very cool that you know those musicians involved with Yanni, saw him perform once, and it was flawless!! Many Rock and Metal bands i like also don't know how to read or write music, and that's equally impressive.
@enggopah
@enggopah 2 жыл бұрын
Having reading or writing skills is different from playing an instrument, and different from knowing theory. Rick is just talking about theory. I figured out a lot of this kind of stuff on my own theory wise when I was in my teens and early twenties. But I suck at reading music and suck at writing. On my instrument I am good, no virtuoso but good. So reading is not necessarily necessary. If by "self taught" one includes someone who reads books on one's own to learn music, then some of the most advanced and greatest composers and musicians in history are self taught, and some of the people whose knowledge is most advanced. Zappa for instance. That just takes being self-motivated, and then it can be basically like going to music school.
