INSANE Herring Fishing Jones Beach Field 10 Pier

Heavy insane herring bite today for a solid bunch of hours. Was fishing with Gregory "The Herring King" and expert fluke'r "inmyspot" Bob. Met a subscriber "Jerry" (same name!) and between the 4 of us we had to fill the pail in no time and soon were shaking them off over the rail. It was nice to meet you Jerry, it was great talking to you and hope to catch you out there again soon! The bite went into the dark and turned off. We were hoping to add some mackerel but didn’t catch any. Fed a few gulls some herring and had a great day out there. Always good fishing and tightlines to all!

+Rose Keelan Magnolia may be your best bet, some reason they move through the channel there if they are around and no where else. You can look for people, scales or discarded sabikis to get a clue of if there were fish around

Wow congratulations crazy action I'm more of a freshwater guy and don't have much experience on the ocean. Are they always there in December and January or is it 50 50?

Its been a great fall! yea they are about through dec but size numbers are dropping as season goes. And its fishing so you will have great and slow days. tend to go into the freshwater in the up coming colder months but well see! Thanks Matt!

Good morning FJB, wanted to know how do you fish your sabiki and what tide to load up on the herring with ?

I cast out and slowly work back bouncing the bottom, if the fish are in front i drop and bounce, cast uptide too if I can fish around both tides the herring seem to be on either when you find a dominant tide you can ride it a bit hope that helps!

dec/jan are good months but can be around oct-april or even may. Not much saltwise but white perch in some outflowing areas

+Rose Keelan I actually get them from a guy at canarsie pier. he sells them a good friend of mine known for years. Ask for bobby if you ever go there. But you can also use something similar cut from a alminum baking or pie pan or even use any tin takeout pans cut out about 5-6" and 1"-2" or so wide for free the work just as good!

There been herring but slow all over right now north and south shores. Heard from canarsie to shinacock and h.harbor to east. I have not fished for them as yet plenty of cold left to come for them I have having fun in the nice weather fly rodding for bass

I like to keep it slow and low small tight bounces off the bottom twitching kinda, a little drift id great too sweep it past em if they are moving hope some helps tightlines, Jerry

No, sometimes it helps others not. If you need to cast you are better with out one. Watch folks around you can see if the are on it or not. Sometimes it makes the diffrence - day, lights etc use it. Casting or fish out try with out. I useually start with one though

There may be some about. i dropped over but did not see any scales a few days back but no telling day bay day they could be in other spots for sure. i like to check on a nice windless cold day. Look for scales trash and anglers, word of a bite gets out quick

But he prefers to go fishing somewhere clean like a fishing pier. Last time we went fresh water fishing in Connecticut and there were snakes there. Haha we weren't a fan of that. You can try the jones beach or captree piers I have fished both and they both do pretty well. Captree does well with fluke some blues around and heard of a blowfish bite there too would be my first choice hope that helps! Never seen snakes there either!

+bob It seems to vary, but some moving water seems to help, sometimes you need to wait it out, others its all day. Some nights have a bite, but it seems to end with the sunset. Some days you need to move to other spots and chase the bite. But seemed on the whole time I was there till dusk then turned off with the dark the past few times. I like about size 8 - but 4 to 10 are pretty good too, Bob like a size 2 and they work great too when they are in thick. Flashers I use cut platic diamond plate but cut aluminum pan works just as good on them and free after you order food! Useually I stick wit 2oz but heavy wind and current you may need more to feel bottom. Hope that helps Joseph they should be in numbers hopefully soon, kindest Jerry
