I've taught PE in NYC for 28 years. I instruct at a Judo school in my spare time. I don't see this level of disrespect in Judo, but the rabid attitude of Americans and popular sports is insane. I suppose you can blame money. Sports are meant to be for recreation. Sports are meant to improve health. Sports are meant to provide a path to confidence and to build character. These are the wholesome rewards. As soon as it becomes a path to money, it's tainted to some degree.

When I coached Little League, I drafted a ballplayer who's Mom had a bad reputation as an ump-abuser. I asked her to be my official scorekeeper, thinking that giving her a true responsibility for the team would keep her in line. But no, during THE FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON, she harassed and berated the home plate ump so much, and in such vile language, I had to ask her to leave the complex. It was an awful situation and her son was so embarrassed and ashamed of his Mom's actions

I watched the disintegration of parent behavior personally. My husband coached my son and daughter’s AySO teams for years. Daughter eventually made ODP, so it got very intense. AY had its moments, but by the time she was moving to a regional team, my husband bought himself a tiny pink beach chair. He called it his “cool out” chair, and he’d coach from sitting in it because parents would be harassing him constantly “Why haven’t you put Lindsay in” and “Didn’t you see that foul?” But the move to her first elite team was caaraazy. Dad’s were cussing, mother’s screaming like fishmonger’s wives, Dad’s were throwing chairs and KICKING TREES. I wanted her to quit that day. Parents would scream invective at my daughter all the time. I remember one time two men and a woman were screaming at her that she was faking injury (she’d been closelined by a defender). “Get the f up1 There’s nothing wrong with you.” I dropped my camera and started across the field. My kid stood up, looked at them and said, “You realize I’m 14 years old, right?” They shut up, thus saving me from a triple homicide charge.

I learned the hard way. In my early teens, at a "for fun" softball game. I was playing at 2nd base, and the 1st base runner jumped and came down on my leg (breaking it). I found out later that this is a way to take out a player. From then on, I avoided any contact sports, even though I've been highly athletic all my life. I've noticed the increase in hyper competitiveness in almost all sports to the point that cheating is accepted as long as you can get away with it. I've never understood that mentality.

As a FORMER youth soccer referee i can explain why there are no explanations afterwards. Police would be required. Those who are angered just want to be offensive and loud and often violent. The ones who actually want to understand are shouted over and pushed aside. Comments when the home team, after losing. (I live there) " You just don't care who wins!" (Head of the coaches org.) Me answering that," I don't get paid much, but that is why they pay me". Losing team once brought an actual English Woman to watch because I was so terrible. I heard over the crowd, English accent," Shut up! He knows what he's doing!" Bless That English Woman. And with me it wasn't the physical threats, it was the legal threats, that got me to stop.

I love how he tried to act like he was "protecting" his son by telling the ref to get out of his son's face when the video CLEARLY shows that the ref was not in the boy's face; he was simply pointing at the youth because he was not respecting the referee's authority to officiate the match. That is the problem with the country today; fewer people have respect for authority because MAGA doesn't respect anything or anyone and feels that they can simply make rules up as they go and break them whenever it suits them.

I have two brothers who have coached high school basketball and baseball/softball teams for decades who’ve told me about unruly parents who interrupt games with disrespect or who violate parents don’t ask me for minutes or playing time contracts at all hours by calling them. They learned to shut their phones off, One parent, who was a rich donator to the school, got my one brother, who coached a girls hs basketball team, fired for not giving his daughters enough minutes because he was a strict coach when it came to fundamentals, running plays and trying to make the girls better teammates. They won the league title that year and he was fired after the season to placate that parent. That same brother just won the girls high school softball championship in Pa. for the third time in 4 years. He didn’t think they could do it this year because they lacked pitching. There was one girl who played outfield who wanted to pitch. He gave her a try, and then worked with her every day to improve her skills. As a well known fast pitch softball pitcher himself, he knew how to make her and the team better. They won the title by one run proving how well the team had jelled around her and how much good coaching helped her and the team. He’s 72 and still at it. But, he and my other brother have no intention of coaching basketball again because of parent problems. My other brother went to baseball and spent his last years at the college level and retired this year. Frankly, I’m tired of undisciplined parents raising undisciplined kids trying to live their ego fantasies through their children. Especially when it comes to competitive sports. That kid was raised by an uncontrollable toxic man who just taught his kid the wrong thing to do and needs to have some jail time to think about it.

WTF is wrong with people? I know a person that was a high school sports coach and he told me a number of stories about being attacked, followed, etc. He told me that for safety, the officials all leave at the same time, because often, they don't have security. He was an older man who "carried" for protection. He was also very religious and didn't want to hurt anyone, but his personal safety and his ability to provide for his family was making him rethink his decision to referee games. He finally stopped refereeing games. He and his wife didn't need the money and it got to a point where the risk wasn't worth it. For safety, all games should be recorded. Officials should not have to depend on a member of the crowd for evidence when a crime is committed. Officials need to hammer anyone involved and seek the maximum possible punishment. Victims should also sue their attackers in civil court and the mugshot, crimes, sentence and civil penalties should be posted on billboards as a warning.

A huge part of the problem lies in the lack of respect given to referees/ umpires from players on the field. Take rugby as an example of how it should work, following every decision, only the captains of each team are allowed to ever speak to the ref, and no-one is allowed to talk back unless asked a question. If the person officiating a game screws up, they can be taken to task by their employers, league and/ or union AFTER the game. Mistakes will happen, 99% of refs don't have the advantage of instant-replay or eyes in the back of their head. Too many parents desperately trying to live vicariously through their children. Pathetic.

When parents would get all crazy, which isn't anything new as this was back in the 80's, he would order them to leave the premises. If they got mouthy and told him they didn't have to listen to him, he would simply tell them that if they didn't leave, their sons team would forfeit the game on the angry parents behalf. worked every time.

I don't have any kids, but I get it: You are so hyped up and want your kid to win so bad that when they are penalized for an infraction that you feel the urge to take physical action. That that is complete and utter NONSENSE and what sort of signal does it send to the kid? Attacking a referee is NEVER acceptable. If you don't care for the call, then pull your kid out of the match and complain to appropriate authorities. If you are correct then you are going to have a chorus of other parents complaining as well. Nope, this guy goes to JAIL; That would be a good thing for these kids to see.

For my daughter’s travel basketball and regular high school team, the coach has an orientation for the parents where we have to sign saying we will not coach or yell at the players, refs and coaches or we will be banned. It’s worked out well so far!

Absolutely disgusting behavior. I also really worry about the kids of these crazy people. What is their home life like? Probably hell.

My brother quit referring club soccer because of the parents’ behavior after only one season. This is a guy who played college soccer and semi-pro soccer. He knows the game tremendously and he just wanted to stay close to the game when he stopped playing himself. He wanted me to join him too, but I told him he will hate it because I had two boys who played club soccer and I knew how parents behave. He quit after only one season. He said the stress due to the abuse by the parents who knew nothing about the game was just too much. The sad thing is that the loudest and rudest parents are usually the ones who don’t understand the game and the rules because they never played the game themselves.

If you can't take your kid losing. Then your kids shouldn't get to play for ruining the game for everyone else.

I was a referee for over 30 years and ejected parents for their behavior in their kids games. Whats appalling is the parent ignorance in the rules of sports. I've referee from young kids level all the way to college level in my years.

Hammond's wife is just as bad, if not worse. Standing up for your man is one thing, but when your man is a coward, have the backbone to call him out on it.

I don't understand why anyone would volunteer to be a ref with all the psycho parents out there. I use to go watch my daughter's soccer games when she was in high school. Some of these parents are scary.

When my daughter was 13-14, she was a ref for girl’s soccer. I usually came with her. At a game where it started to rain, she let them play on. But when the lightning came followed by thunder, she called the game. Two fsthers came to her to argue her out of it. (This field was surrounded by huge trees). They even called her stupid and that she was a terrible ref. I walked over and just asked what was going on. The men immediately backed down from their high horse. In the car on the way home, she cried and at home, quit reffing right then.
