Just to be clear, he won the nobel prize because his invention made it possible to create synthetic fertilisers. The world had reached it's limit producing food the natural way, the process has helped feed billions of people.

Two more tidbits: 1) When the song says "fed the world," that isn't really hyperbole. It's estimated that half of the world's current population has food thanks to the fertilizers created with ammonia provided by the Haber-Bosch Process. 2) The section that begins "Where does this lead?" refers to the following: In 1919, Haber created a gaseous pesticide he called "Zyklon" or "cyclone." However, various governments determined that the formula was too close to the weaponized gasses of the War, and it was banned worldwide. Three or four years later, after some tinkering, two other chemists developed a new pesticide, Zyklon B. Then, in the early 1940s, the Nazis were looking for an efficient poison that wouldn't raise foreign eyebrows to use in the death camps. Zyklon B fulfilled these requirements...

Haber won the Nobel prize for synthesizing Ammonia fertilizer that fed BILLIONS of people across the planet. He also invented Chlorine gas so that is why the band asks if he was a sinner or a saint. He fed billions of people but he also killed a lot of people during the war from chlorine gas.

He also created the "Zyklon B" after ww1, and used it as an insecticide, unfortunately that same gas would be used by the nazis in Auschwitz after Haber's death

@@lukascizek2710 He created Zyklon-A, the nazis then used his work to make Zyklon-B. So he's partly responsible but he didn't make it himself iirc.

Thanks for your articulate reaction for this heavy song. A few other fans of Sabaton (myself included), are sometimes slow to hear their new work because we know it's going to be telling a devastating story. Father was a song that I saw on their website, and just didn't click on it for about two weeks. Yes, a great question about how to deal with people like him, who can create something so beneficial and yet so deadly and horrible. There has been demands for him to have the Nobel Prize removed from his name due to creating chemical warfare, which is just bad form. Do we punish or condemn the person who created the first gun, sword, knife, etc. Gas Warfare is horrible, but he could have made his invention far, far worse. He personally instructed on its use and it's ratio's to kill people as quickly and efficiently as possible. Which tells me he wanted the gas to kill, but he also wanted as little suffering to its victim as possible. He could have mixed the two chemicals and caused the suffering to go on for a lot longer if he had wanted to. And for anyone playing the numbers game... we simply have to look at our planet's population compared to before his fertilizer. I'd say the fertilizer and the lives it has allowed to live has paid for whatever sin he may or may not have accrued.

The "numbers game" is also the whole point when they say "So who can tell us what is right or wrong, maths or morality alone", of we go by the numbers, by the "maths", he has saved much more people than he killed, but on the other hand should he be forgiven despite the great number of people he killed, is it "moraly" right to forgive him ? He did create chlorine gas with the intent for it to be used as a weapon. Should we remember him as good or evil ? Is he a hero or a devil ? A sinner or a saint ? I still 100% agree that his name shouldn't be removed from the Nobel Prize.
