I love watching any great player, new school or old school, but my favourite part of watching legends like Negreanu, Ivey, and Seidel (super underappreciated legend by the way) is watching them implement new school tricks and strategies. They'll always have that old school instinctive nature about them but they keep up with new school style as well.

Its amazing how Ivey takes his time to think about the hand. Mateos knows how to presure in river and this spot is so rough to Ivey. I think if they were playing this hand deepstack or in other torney situation Iveys may calls, becase his instint was saying "he could be bluffing, call"

I must concur - I'm an old school player and I love seeing the old school vs. new school players battle. I was at Cherokee lately, playing in a WSOP Circuit tournament and I remember messaging a couple of the guys I play poker with back home on the breaks, letting them know my chip stack sizes. During the first two breaks, I was at a table full of GTO players and was able to hold a nice chip stack up through the second break. I was telling them how easy it is to read these GTO players! Lol

I would defo have ripped 10-9 suited in Peters seat. I get why Little said "no mas" as Peters was UTG, but in my view, his chances of chipping up significantly would've been great (even though you wouldn't wanna be up against multiple players in an all-in scenario). In this case Peters would've got a double-up (since Ivey would've folded) which would have opened some new opportunities for Dave. The difference between 6 and 15 bigs is like night and day. He would almost certainly have been forced with an all-in decision in the very next hand and if he has like 7-4 or 8-3 off or some litter like that, what then?

It’s the FT of a 30k buyin.. not level 9 of a $400 local tournament. 9/10hh should be doing a lot of folding utg with 6bbs 9 handed. ICM changes decision making as well.

Insane 'read' ? It wasnt up to him to call/raise/fold. It was a check/bet situation and he was just fortunate ivey didnt call. There is a huge misconception out there that television and videos like this have propagated that these poker players are wizards who can look into peoples souls and tell what they have lmao. When really, theyre just making a mostly mathematical decision based on limited information. But nooooo they have most of the public worshipping them like theyre something so special. I like watching both old and new school. Each has its strengths. However, in my opinion the old school are better to watch for cash players. Having said that, I love when say, "suited connectors are not what they used to be." A lot of cash players haven't gotten the memo and still play them as aces regardless of position...kinda old school.

Is that Evan Jarvis in commentary? Sounds a lot like him if not! These super shallow stack spots are really fun and interesting. They are SO important, because it's often in FTs where payjumps are getting serious that you'll find yourself in these situations. I always cringe *hard* when I hear players say there is no poker to be played once you get below 12ish BBs. I do have a couple questions about this hand: (This for anyone who has an opinion to answer, not just JL, would love to hear any input from anyone) 1) How relevant do you think the fact that Peters is super short and about to be big blind is? Plus, wth Ivey being BB this hand, it means he has to just post the SB next hand then has a full orbit to find a hand to shove with. That would make it a way tougher call for Ivey from a $$EV perspective, BUT if you think Ivey is solely out here to win the tournament, do you think in a backwards way it would make Ivey more inclined to call? I say this because, with there being another super short stack, it incentivizes Matteos to bluff more here, which would mean from a chip EV point of view Ivey should call more, even though again from a $$EV point of view he should call less. Then again, if Matteos knows Ivey is just going for the win then you end up in this black hole of circular arguments, so maybe none of that is relevant. 2) How relevant is the 6 in Ivey's hand? With Matteos opening from the HJ, he absolutely never has 64, 96, or T6, and being sub 25bbs deep even 65s probably won't play. On the other hand Matteos could have bluffs like QTs, Q9s, AT, A9. And Matteos is very unlikely to show up with an 8 here, so really, it's a Jack or better, or a bluff. So, with all that being said, is Ivey thinking that 76 could be a better hand to hero call with than a hand as strong as Q8? If Ivey had an 8, would that be a hand strong enough to x/jam flop? If the answer to the latter is yes, then in a weird way, is 76 one of the best hands Ivey can even have here? Is 76 a better call than 97 or T7? 3) I want to go back to preflop. From my understanding, when the big blind is super short, they are incentivized to defend with a wider range. So, with Ivey starting the hand on ~8bb, would it have been a good move for Matteos to opt to open to, say, 2.5bb (625k) instead of 2bb (500k)? I know in normal situations when the BB is super short you want to open slightly larger than normal to decentivize the big blind from defending, but there are some other factors in play here. For one, it's the FT, surely ICM plays a factor. Two, the CO has roughly the same stack as Matteos, and the SB has him covered. Three, AQ is a very good hand, perhaps he doesn't mind getting called. There's always a million things to consider in every hand this is just the tip of the iceberg. Had Matteos opened to 625k would Ivey have still defended? How big would the open raise have had to be for Ivey to fold the 76o from the big off of 8bb? - PS. My fish self would be kicking myself in DP's shoes, folding the eventual nuts 😂always be results oriented people

How can you call folding the 10 9 suited nitty....only to say 5 seconds later that shoving it would have been a mistake ? @1:30 ? So shoving is a mistake but folding is nitty ? Ran this hand through Peak, and it was in library. For most part, play followed GTO solution. Mateos’ R bet was a pure bluff, but he had a ton of bluffing hands. Phil’s fold of 7s6d was 83% for that bet size, 73% for smaller size. Not including any ICM nuances, it was a good fold.

I just like aggressive poker. But I do have an "old school" concept that I'd enjoy being analyzed from a more recent perspective. David Sklansky and the "fundamental theorem of poker." To paraphrase, If you somehow "knew" what cards your opponent had and with that knowledge Would have played your hand differently than you did, Then you have made a "mistake" or several. Not necessarily a "bad play", but a mistake Like you check back the legit best hand on button/river when your opponent has a "range advantage" (new school) but you missed value because your opponent would have called beaten Or folded and basically gained almost no real info from you in this hand (old school)[i personally feel like ANY pot i can win without a showdown is a net + even if I know a min bet won't get called or raised]
