Maine resident here (and very big fan of the channel). So glad to see this video on our state's most famous bird. I am fortunate to have seen it a few times and was actually over there last Saturday. This bird is drawing a hundred plus people viewing it at all times from all over. Birders and non birders alike, the entire state is buzzing with excitement over this truly incredible bird.

Many of the photos I’ve seen seem very far away. Are the views decent or is it pretty much just a speck?

@@BadgerlandBirding Most of the time the views are pretty distant. It can be hit or miss. There are limited vantage points so most people are currently viewing it from a small bridge because you can see up and down the river it frequents. But sometimes the bird is pretty far upstream. The best views I had were on the first full day it was seen at the end of 2021. It soared all around in front of us (me and a couple hundred other birders losing their minds) and perched very close at the top of a conifer. Unbelievably cool experience.

I saw this bird yesterday. It is as beautiful as they say! I am glad you made this video. It was nice to watched something that quickly summarized where it has been and where they usually live. Bringing in a knowledgeable Steller birder was a nice aspect of this video as well.

That trip to see winter eagles in Hokkaido sounds amazing! I saw my first Stellar’s here in Korea a couple weeks ago. Their overall size is impressive but so is their beak size. What a honker! Interestingly, Seoul is at about the same latitude as Virginia, though not as far south as Texas. Only a very small number of eagles come here every winter. I wish I could see those large groups in Hokkaido-can’t believe that’s real!!

It's so cool how these birds have the power to travel across continents. It has the freedom and ability to go wherever it wants. I can't wait to see where it goes next.

What a fantastic eagle! I had not heard about this and I'm in the same camp as you, "How did NO ONE notice this gigantic creature flying through?!" Though that does make me want to go take a look into them again. I'd read about the Stellar's a long time ago, thought they were awesome of course, but at that time (and the book I had my hands on) didn't mention things like migratory patterns or even feeding habits; the book was primarily focused on how to recognize birds of prey when they're in the air, with some basic profiles and fun facts about the animals mixed in. I'm positive more has been learned since then and now I'm excited to go find out! Great story, and hopefully this big guy will hang around a little longer!

I took a trip to Maine and saw it in early February 2023. I met Birders who flew in from Florida and Colorado to see it. I live in Massachusetts. It was truly amazing! Does none have a clue as to age or sex?

How does the Stellers compare to the Calif. Condor in size?
@BadgerlandBirding
@BadgerlandBirding Жыл бұрын
Great question! From what I’ve read , Steller’s wingspan is 6.4-8.2 feet with a weight of about 11-20 pounds and Condor weight it 20-24 pounds with a Wingspan of 9.8 feet. So Condor would be larger and heavier at adulthood.

I think it could definitely had been in Texas if it flew through the west coast while avoiding the mountains. I wonder if crossing familiar mountain ranges versus unfamiliar mountain ranges made it more cautious.

Would like to point out that the white identifying mark on the wing is in the exact same spot in the photos and same size and that's why experts have said its the same bird.

They are definitely fish eaters, as they’re the closest relative of the bald eagle, but there are videos of them actively hunting flying seagulls, and other seabirds, near their cliffside colonies in Kamchatka, Eastern Russia, and in Sakhalin.

The Massive bird I saw had very broad shoulders ,very square beak with very hooked beak tip it was true beast .replace crow with bald in terms of size comparison to Stellers or Mystery eagle I had seen .Steller was perched in a tree then was bothered by adult bald eagle .much like crows do with Bald Eagles but swap place with Mystery eagle with Bald and Bald with Crow that should give idea how massive this bird was .

fyi, a banned bird is still a wild bird. "... it is a wild bird..." ...as apposed to....?
@BadgerlandBirding
@BadgerlandBirding Жыл бұрын
I think you mean “banded”. A lack of bands would indicate no visible human interference. Oftentimes birds in zoos and private collections will be banded. A band doesn’t mean it was ever captive but a lack of a band is a point in favor of it being wild.
