Had this feature on my 90 Toyota 4x4 back before the trucks were called Tacoma’s

I believe that feature is for when you stall in high water. It keeps muddy water and debris from getting in between the friction plate and flywheel. Most manual transmissions are vented on the bottom, so water gets inside during a water crossing. Wranglers have a similar feature when you can start the vehicle in 4LO without depressing the clutch. The reason you don’t want debris in your clutch is that it causes extreme premature wear. Ask me how I know haha…

When your clutch master cylinder goes bad, you’ll be thanking Toyota for this feature. That’s really the only time you’d need this. Its also a testament to how strong the Toyota starter is. Again, this feature is only meant to be used in emergency situations, such as a clutch master cylinder failure. The older Toyotas didn’t have it, as it was introduced in 1989, when they introduced the sixth generation pickup.

That "feature" dates all the back to on my 1994 Toyota Pickup (before tacoma)

If you ever do rock crawling with manual transmission, you start your truck in gear (1st gear) and when you stop driving you simply turn the engine off while the truck still in 1st gear, rock crawling is slow so you are mostly in 1st, and you avoid using clutch because you may burn out your clutch faster. It’s not a weird feature but a must have you do rock crawling

It's a gift from Akio Toyoda when you stall ascending a steep hill off-road. I could start any of the cars of my youth without depressing the clutch pedal. It wasn't something to do, but I could.

So when you push the button in and the light comes on, after you start the truck with the ignition switch, does the clutch start button default back to deactivation ? How many electrical connections are on the back of the switch, 2 or more than that ? I ask, so I can wire it in to bypass the clutch pedal switch. I used a fuse to bypass the pedal switch, but would like to use the clutch start cancel button if possible to do so.

You push the button once and it lights up. Can you push it again to disable? Or does it re-disable after starting?

I had this in my old 2002 Taco... It allows you to keep the car in gear while starting it in 4x4 Low.

My grandfather’s 88’ Toyota pickup has the same feature, don’t know since when Toyota included this.

I wish I had this feature on my 2018 Colorado. I have a parking brake that is released by depressing it. So I have to clutch to start, shift to neutral, release the parking brake with my left foot, depress the clutch again, put it into gear and go. With that feature you have, I could start the engine, quickly release the brake, clutch and go. So it would major convenience. Does Toyota have hill start assist? Works pretty well in GM. Holds the truck with the brakes for a time or until you touch the gas, giving you time time to get in gear. When I was learning 40 years ago, I had do it the hard way! In hose days, the truck had a hand release for the parking brake, so for really steep hills, you could have your feet at the ready and in 1st gear. Hand release the brake, engage the clutch simultaneously.

Welcome to 1976. New to your channel. I will try to be cool. I have an 06 Tacoma, automatic, but would consider getting something like what you have. Cool. ... I'm pretty sure that my 1982 VW Rabbit didn't require me to step in the clutch. ... I've run that, my Dodge, my Mercedes, on vegetable

If you're on a hill and wanted to start moving without taking it out of gear, just set the parking brake and then release it when you release the clutch and apply throttle.

Unfortunately, the 24' model they removed the manual hand brake and went with an electronic style. Probably another reason to stay with my 19 TRD Off-road manual!
@michiganborn830310 ай бұрын
@vmendez944 Couldn't you do the same thing even with electronic brake? My '20 Harley has a hill hold feature that helps hold the bike in place on a slope until I transition the throttle and clutch to get moving. Never needed this feature before because I already knew to hold the rear brake to do the same thing.

There are certain situations where this wouldn't work. Keep in mind in most vehicles, the parking brake only locks the rear wheels. So if you are offroading, transitioning to your foot brake to parking brake might mean you slip backwards if your rear wheels don't have any traction. Another commentor mentioned that if you stall in water, you don't want to depress the clutch because water can get inside since its vented, but I don't know the validity of this.

@@vmendez944I have a friend with a manual and he sometimes has to use the electronic parking brake in the same manner, and he's able to get it to work fine. But I do agree I hate electronic parking brakes as it kinda defeats the purpose of having a backup brake in emergencies when not using it as a parking brake
