This ones a real rustic wonky but totally functional and pretty habitat made from an old tree stump and which turned out beautifully.

I'm happy you got a bumblebee nest even if they missed your beautifully made homes. This house is really cute!

LexieDi Yeah totally agree! Sometimes the simplest things are the best when it comes to nature after all, a structure wouldn't exist in the wild....

This is now on my to do list! What's the orientation for the holes when you place it in the garden? South to south-east? And in direct sunlight or do the bees prefer the shade?
@Calastein

Hi, so East or West is fine if that's all you can do in a garden but South facing is optimal preferably in a sheltered location in full sun :) Hope this helps

i like the log idea it looks brilliant. how deep did you drill your holes . i've bought extra long drill bits to drill deeper holes . i noted on one of the other you tube videos encourages the female bees to lay more female eggs which has got to be a good thing .

Raymond Kilminster hello there :) Thanks I am really pleased with it. That's a really interesting point about the hole depth and one which I completely agree with. As this log was so thick I was thinking as I was drilling it that I could've gone a lot deeper but I literally went in as far as the drillbit could go and wished I had some deeper drills myself. My new pillar drill has the capacity to fit something underneath the drill head a lot thicker and also the head moves far more to make the holes deeper. Once it's all set up I'll make another log habitat like this one and do a new video. Xxxx

damn that's cool. is it only good for bees, or what other insects like those holes? also, is facing south/east (the sun) very important? neat video, thanks.

Bo Thanks :) It’s mainly for solitary bees but by having solitary bees you will also then attract parasitical wasps which are beautiful and all part of the same system. You may get another creepy-crawlies is in there too which is nice but generally it’s solitary bees. Somewhere on my channel there is a video which pretty much covers everything you will need to know about positioning solitary bee habitats and which has loads of other tips too but generally a southeast position is best. 😁

Just cut down a hulking great leylandii and I've left a 3ft high stump for this very purpose. So my plan is to whack the front of now and then leave it. Then drill the holes in the spring/early summer. Sound like a plan? or have I got my timings out? The stump's still in the ground and will remain so
