What would be some good hacks for this type of light to improve longevity? Extra vent holes in the body. More thermal compound or thermal pads for the led boards. Then maybe ditch the foam block in the housing in exchange for peelable silicone on the corners? SMPS supplies that are so close together can resonate together if they are not really robust stable designs, and they can produce an audible hissing sound. I have seen this happen in some equipment that placed a number of PCB-mounted, epoxy-potted mini SMPS modules in close proximity to one another. Coils inside them started resonating from mutual inductance and they made a nasty audible hiss.

Try a warmer color temperature LED bulb. I prefer a 4000k-5000k color temp myself. The 2700k ones are way too yellow/orange, and dim looking to me and anything above 5000k is too cold, blue, and the color rendition (C.R.I.) of them bothers me. Try to find a bulb with a C.R.I. of 90+, (100 c.r.i. would be the same as natural daylight from the sun at noon) and I think you'll find that you'll be able to read print just fine again.

Looked good I thought, so I got a couple which eventually arrived and worked a treat (or so I thougt) One in the porch, one in the hall. About 3:30 they both lit and so did I, certain we were being burgled. The PIR in the drive was dark, perhaps they were tunnelling under the house? I never did find out what set it off ... but over the next week or so I realised that EVERYTHING set them off ... next door's cat, man next door's prostate, Grass growing, birds on the roof, birds on the drive, birds flying over the roof and the drive. Even a hedgehog in next door's bins. They were far more sensitive than our early warning system and I think probably could see further. On the other hand, the PIR is rigidly directional and never gives a false alarm (it hardly ever comes on, even when you stand in front of it). I've ordered some boards but I'm in two minds how to use them seriously.

With the apparent power / real power issue, surely the reactive element will be a sum of the various reactances across the building as seen by the meter. Amazon has US rated ones in 60W warm white for $39.95 USD. This might be an acceptable lamp for ceiling mount, as long as there is no glass enclosure for the fixture. Enclosed fixtures will destroy LED "replacement" bulbs, as LEDs can't cool themselves adequately in an enclosed fixture. The bulbs fail within months of installation, and it's expensive to replace existing fixtures. The company that makes these should sell a version with a 200-300mm frosted Plexiglas disc mounted 10cm from each COB to diffuse the light a bit. That would be a lot like having 3 incandescent bulbs in a frosted glass fixture. Absolutely ideal for a basement, garage, or industrial.

Anything is deformable with enough force :) As for the issue of smart meters / apparent power - is there actually a valid reason for changing people for it (I remember you mentioned industrial sites tend to pay for it). If not, should we be making a bigger noise about it before it happens? I've refused a smart meter so far (on software / networking issues alone) and their new tactic seems to be not sending a guy round and sending letters saying they charging for average use with the 'make sure youre paying the right amount by getting a smart meter'
@Mark1024MAK5 жыл бұрын
Change company then. They are very keen to read your meter if they think they are about to loose money...! In the mainland U.K. they can’t force you to have a so called ‘smart’ meter. For domestic / home / light industrial / small office properties, the small difference between low power items having a good power factor and a poor power factor is mostly irrelevant compared to the rating of the infrastructure needed to supply electrical heating devices (room heaters, ovens, cookers, water heaters etc...).

The unexpectedly low heat sink temperature might be due to bad thermal coupling from the LED module to the heatsink. I mean that dab of thermal paste looks more like an insulator than helping with thermal conductivity.

Some Chinese sellers actually advertise thermal insulation for a cooler handle as a feature in their flashlights.

It's definitely thermal compound. A rather cheap industrial blend that runs about $3 for 60g. Awesome stuff, performs better and last longer than most of the high price compounds I see PC builders use. That dab however is absurdly small. Typically you would apply that stuff either by rolling it on with a swab or spreading it on with a small plastic spreader. It doesn't flow like alternative compounds when heated, too thick of a mixture for that.

Hi Clive, I got one of these with the microwave motion sensor (which can be switched off!) from eBay for £18:53.

I ordered one of the microwave units right after I'd recorded this video.

Could you do an installation resistance test between the metal grids and the supply at 250 volts
@bigclivedotcom5 жыл бұрын
I'm away from my workshop at the moment, but I could do a 500V test. That wouldn't show the potential insulation breakdown under fault conditions like an LED burning up.

i want a couple of those things now.

Looks badass. Maybe I’ll get a few for my clubhouse :P
