This is a really good video, I have a ej205 forester xt and I’m really curious to install a dual range in it. If it held up to a wrx, I’m pretty sure it’s going to hold up to my 177hp and 245Nm!!

yes ! it should easily hold up that power level. I believe the turbocharged forester xt should have around 260 hp at the crank tho ? (which the dual range trans should also hold)

@@sebastianedinger5945 I wish...in europe we get more of the EJ 205 engines for the first SG foresters. These come also on the WRX with 225hp, but on the XTs they only have 177hp. From what i understand, at least the cams are different, but maybe also other parts. EJ25 came on the Facelift SG Foresters.

I mostly wonder if it would be possible to modify Sti/3.0 Spec B legacy 6 speed to be dual range. Mostly for fun to be able to trash it without speeding too much while it punches with more torque.

Spur gear is straight cut; the other one is helical.

R U Fixed ? : The Dual range Transaxle debut in USA/Canada Subarus originally as a 4-speed in the Late 1970s and stayed that way with the Brat for its entire run along with the sedan/wagon. However, when the major reskin (and new interior) came in 1984 as the " all new" Coupes,Wagons,Sedans...the Dual-range was then standard with a 5-Speed and "shift on the fly/On Demand 4WD"....that lasted unti the end of then named "Loyales' left the States in the early 90s with the debut of the USA made Legacy. Low-Range was never offered with the automatics then....and neither was the 5-speed Dual-range ever offered with the older bodystyle 4WD hatchback or 4WD Brat which were still being sold along-side their 1984-1990s siblings for quite some time. Loyale 4WDs can still be found in junkyards with their Dual-range 5-speeds for all the world to see....the reduction ratio for the 5speed and 4speed was 2 to1........great for stop and go grind of bumper to bumper commute traffic......and for going up steep driveways,crawling through snow,etc, With Peugeot 14-15 inch rims on those old school Subarus.....they could do some mild crawling with the added ground clearance with the Peugeot rims...which gave owners options in tire-size diameters.

Subaru transmission is FRONT wheel drive with a rear axle that is constantly driven by the center differential slippery clutch system. Why do you all get this wrong and claim it to be rear bias. You can keep on the gas and pull the handbrake to slide while front wheels are SPINNING just like they do in RALLY.

Its not that 5 speed is weak. Its that Subaru stupidly used a transmission designed for naturally aspirated engine torque with turbo cars. If you would turbo a Corolla or any other motor their transmissions would also fail much sooner, and it doesnt help that people who get them are idiots and increase further with access port bullshit when transmission is at its limit already with the stock wrx torque wise. Which is also the reason why STi finally got bespoke 6speed at the end of the 90s. Subaru just was too cheap to derive new 5mt from it for a lesser model.

As far as I found out, the dual range gearboxes were not available in the US, since I am living in the EU mine has it, but turns out legacy and outback only get roughly 20% reduction, which is in my opinion by far not enough...

4th gen Legacy gets 1.447 reduction so 44.7%. And it also was paired with most powerful variants of EJ20 - EJ204 165hp detuned jdm motor. And EJ25 on the outback. It gives them effective torque almost that of 3.0L EZ30 motor.

I can tell you the low range ratio is a waste of time , not low enough for good low speed torque when off road , as specially since Subaru engines have no bottom end torque !
