Do you have decent wifi signal by your bench? Chromecast can get really finnicky when wireless drops a bit. If the signal is low/inconsistent you could maybe set a repeater up near your bench or even possibly get one of those power supplies they sell for them with a built in ethernet port. edit: after watching some more, maybe the phone you're using can't keep up? It's having to transcode the video feed twice, once for saving the file, and once for streaming to the chromecast (I think). Maybe time to get a real camera with a monitor output? ;D

In the United States Holophane is very good lighting company! Their street lighting is completely serviceable. If something fails we replace individual components not the entire fixture. Even in some of their decorative street lights they provide retrofit kits to go from HPS to LED. A lot of interesting programming can also be do with them. You could do things like, having the lighting dim at a set time for ambience. Then ramp back up to full power for complete coverage. High quality stuff...

The black 'potting' stuff will peel off when warmed up - like you said, kinda like Blu-tack! - I had the fortunate experience of that stuff for the first time recently when repairing a SUB, - thought it was the old black silicon stuff at first, until it came off together as one, and now I can play with and mould it as I want - it's great for temporary fixings - oh, and leaves no residue! :D
@AureliusR5 жыл бұрын
Doubtful that it will peel off when warmed up. That sub must have been using really cheap potting compound, it's designed so that it will not soften before it burns -- this is to prevent water ingress and to properly insulate components from each other. A brand like Phillips wouldn't use cheap potting compound

My local city recently upgraded to LED streetlights while performing major road work near my house. However several of the LED units have gone straight blue. According to the news this was a chemistry defect in several of the diodes, and in fact on one panel can have a mix of blue and white, and other lights one panel will be blue and another white. It's a really unnerving sensation walking under one of these malfunctioning lights, and it gives me the sensation that it's throwing off large amounts of UV, though I've never tested that theory.
@bigclivedotcom2 жыл бұрын
It's not UV. Just deep blue. The blue normally stimulates red/green phosphor to make white light, but the phosphor has detached.

Bit surprised to see a light sensor in the head unit itself, I am used to remote switched street lights with the sensor at the main ignition point and secondary ignition points following the main one, incidentally our system uses 3 wires, neutral, evening and night allowing sections to be dimmed when not many people are around, remote switching makes troubleshooting a lot simpler, just turn a section on and walk around to see if one is not working, similarly if one street light is not on the section it was expected you can quickly turn sections on and off to find the section it is actually connected to

I wouldn't be surprised if the Chromecast tried to use hardware compression which was already being used to save the video and ether used CPU compression or tried to share the hardware.
@AureliusR5 жыл бұрын
I'd be very surprised if anything but the newest phones had MPEG4 or h.264 compression in hardware. It might use the GPU to accelerate it, but it'd still be in software. Also, what happened (as far as I can tell) is the CPU/GPU inside his phone started to thermal throttle. Hence why it worked fine for the first while and then slowly got worse. Trying to compress and save video to SD, while also compressing & streaming to the Chromecast is too much. I'm assuming he was using the "cast your screen" feature built into Android. This feature is *very* different from all other Cast buttons you see in various apps. When you cast, say, Netflix to your Chromecast, what actually happens is a stripped-down version of Chrome runs on the Chromecast and it directly streams the Netflix to that device. Your phone essentially just becomes a remote control. However, when you "cast" your screen, the phone has to both render the video AND stream it to the Chromecast, which is literally just passing a video stream to the output device. Therefore all the processing happens on the phone. This is part of the genius of Chromecast and it's why apps like KZbin, Netflix, etc run so well even on crap phones -- all the video processing is offloaded to the Chromecast. Anyway, rant over, just wanted to get that info out there :P

This is actually really good advice. I know Clive likes the simplicity of just hitting record on a phone. Most street lights have a little cap on top of them. In the cap is a photocell, that senses the light from above, such as sunlight. When the sunlight goes away(nighttime or very cloudy conditions), the photocell no longer see's light. When the photocell no longer see's light, it signals the ballast to turn on. Turning the light on. Then, when the sun comes back, the photocell see's the light, and signals the ballast to turn the light back off.
@jusb10666 жыл бұрын
i thou hgt they had more control, we had an issue with our led streetlights and they were coming on way too late, 2 hours after dark, and it was 3 streets around me doing it till they fixed it, i assumed central control?
@TheChipmunk20086 жыл бұрын
The ones round here (southampton UK, for reference, altho SSE seem to be installing them all over their service area in hampshire/dorset/wiltshire/berkshire/sussex) are controlled by what I assume to be radio link boxes that plug into the photocell socket on the top. (the standard Harvey Hubbell type twistlock photocell connector) . There seem to be local 'control units' that can be centrally controlled and then talk to the individual lights. It enables the councils to do useful things like turning them off or dimming them at midnight (or other chosen times) and also gimmicky things like turning all the streetlights off on secondary roads for Earth Hour

We've got the higher colour temperature version and the light is so harsh I had to move bedrooms as it was keeping me up at night (even a blackout blind was not good enough as it still leaked in through the edges). Chromecast also supports wired ethernet if that's a possibility for you Clive. That would help a little bit if the packet transmission is an issue because WiFi is WiFi and airtime is a finite resource. Yes, even the first gen. Either the Google's own adapter or you can cobble together your own with a USB NIC (there's a compatibility list if you search for it) and a funky Y cable with: microUSB female for injecting power, USB-A female for the USB NIC and microUSB male for connecting to the Chromecast to provide power and networking) But I don't think the networking is the issue, it's probably just the phone SoC not being able to keep up recording video, encoding it, storing it + recording screen, encoding it, sending it over the network. Or the SoC _can_ keep up but the phone just heats up (faster/more now) and has to throttle clockspeeds to save itself from heating (a cooling solution might help but an active one probably not an option because of obvious reasons). If the heating is an issue, lowering the screen brightness is also a valid thing to try and mitigate it.

I imagine if it were a router issue, it wouldn't have affected the recording, nor would have caused the phone to become warm. I think outputing to two monitors (TV + Phone Screen) as well as recording may be a bit too much for the phone's cpu. If you've got good computer skills, maybe a raspberry pi + usb webcam could fit your needs; but the problem would be a lot of fiddling with software.

If I remember correctly, he uses the same Phone I have, and mine already tends to overheat when you make long videos, which causes the recorded video to stutter.

Has the component part of Philips been bought by Hisense? Will those components be renamed soon? Just wondering.

What do you think the chances are that the orange connection could be used to wire up a cctv camera (big brother is always watching sort of thing)

It's not really the right type of circuitry for that.

bigclivedotcom it just seems to me they put a lot of trouble and extra expense to pot it when it would be far cheaper to give it a seal,glue it or sonic weld it shut you stop water mitigation

Once you got the chevron module out of the way and open the lid all the way and the spade connector came off the main body, the lid should have been able to be lifted away. According to the open slots on the hinges., no?

Just as a tip with chromecast devices. Strong wifi is a must if you're transmitting/casting the display from a device to your chromecast. I.e. wifi access point in the same room or next room over. 5Ghz wifi can work well or better still, have the casting device on 2.4Ghz and the chromecast on the 5Ghz (or the other way around) so they are using different antennas each.

I think the cheapo phone you use as a camera can't handle the extra load. Using an HDMI output is probably a safe bet for an external monitor. I'd like to see the camera get upgraded though, I'm rather fond of 50/60p refresh rate.
