You may recognize Deborah Czeresko as the winner of season one of Blown Away on Netflix. Today, she lets Arch Digest into her studio for an up-close look at how she fashions molten glass into massive abstract vases. “Glass is very elemental, and some of the tools we use are also very elemental. Heat, water, air, gravity, centrifugal force - a lot of people don't think of those as tools. But they are for the glass maker.”

I loved this video!! I was introduced to Deborah by watching Blown Away, and as fun as that series is, they never took time to really break down the process. This was terrific!

You learn more about the mechanics of glass blowing in this one video than in 3 seasons of blown away.

As a person who works in clay I've always wanted to try glass blowing but I've also been very weary of it since my instincts are to get my hands on it. Ouch!

Just my own personal opinion- Very enjoyable, informative video. The other works were so cute/impressive! The featured work, however...not looking like an egg to me...kinda gross...but everything else (aside from the music if I'm gonna be super picky), really cool :)

The vases are not abstract if they represent an egg
@carolz5090

Ummm…respectfully disagree. I think you can have an abstraction of a figurative subject and it still be a recognizable form. Using something well known as an example - Picasso’s Guernica, or Henry Moore’s women for a 3 dimensional example. I don’t wanna get into a KZbin thread food fight here, this is just my view.

I respectfully disagree. Look at Monets water lilies series. They are obviously lily pads and water, but they are not done realistically. Its the artist’s impression, oftentimes looking like a scene out of a dream.

How on earth can you do that with out wearing gloves!?!?
@TheFatblob25
@TheFatblob25 Жыл бұрын
Because you just get used to the heat, to a point, & furthermore gloves get in the way of having control of the pipe. You can't turn it easily with gloves on. Sometimes you will put on a glove for certain moves, trimming a lip, or tweezing, times where you have close proximity for a long time. Assistants also use wooden paddle for shielding your fingers.
