Sacramento may not be widely recognized for its Modernist architecture, but the city boasts a significant number of Modernist homes and buildings, particularly in the northern region. John Harvey Carter was a pivotal figure in shaping Sacramento's architectural landscape, contributing to both private commissioned residences and commercial structures, as well as playing a key role in the establishment of the American River Parkway. With a portfolio encompassing over 400 buildings in Northern California, Carter left an indelible mark on the region.
Adding to the unexpected charms of Sacramento, The Nittler Residence which was built in 1963 by John Harvey Carter stands out as one of the rare homes situated on a suburban hillside in the area. Karen and Najib stumbled upon this distinctive property while perusing homes for sale in their neighborhood, and the story of how they came to own it is both surprising and perhaps fateful to some. The residence retains much of its original character, boasting features like wood paneling, terrazzo flooring, a spiral staircase entry, and copper facade fireplaces. Its unique layout seamlessly accommodates the needs of the family of five, with the yard, patio, and hillside areas flowing effortlessly from the rear of the home. You can rest assured that the home is in the right hands and will be beautifully preserved for years to come.

Nothing beats the vibe of a well designed and well preserved Mid Century Modern home. They really need to be owned by folks who appreciate what they are.

I live in Carmichael, on the river. I toured this home when it was on the market. It was very cool. I’m so pleased to see the new owners preserving and expanding the legacy of this home. Beautiful! I wish I knew them!

To think that your first reaction was to say that this is not a house for a family only to realize that it was actually built for a family... it is absolutely priceless. An amazing house for a beautiful family. Thank you so much for sharing your experience...

I love the geodesic dome in the yard. My father was an architect and a devotee of Buckminster Fuller. So I also had a dome in my back yard as a child. I was an MCM child, now an MCM adult. I love the warmth of this home. ❤

Lovely, warm house perfectly integrated into its site. The slab wood millwork with the diminutive exposed hinge hardware for it is sublime.

You always shoot your feature homes beautifully, but this video was stunning. Every detail shot, both interior and exterior was phenomenal. I loved how there were so many exterior detail shots. Beautiful home.

Beautiful, wonderful home and family. As a teenager, I had a good friend whose family lived in a somewhat similar home. Thought, at the time, "Oh, cool house," and that was it. Now I wish I'd really learned more about it-I'm sure it had an amazing story to tell. Thanks for telling this one!

You guys look like good caretakers and the advice in the end was spot on, my family too lives in a 1961 custom built modernist house and it's true, if you want perfection it would drive you nuts. But if you embrace it for what it is and accept imperfections it's awesome to live in houses like these and they should be embraced and protected as important postcards to a great optimistic time in American history.

Love 🥰 so awesome these guys have embraced living here as a family home - which was what these houses were intended as; not museum pieces.

Meanwhile living less than 10 miles from this house...my husband and I can dream 😂 beautiful home. So cool to know I live so close to such beautiful homes. Sometimes being surrounded by fast-built cookie cutter homes makes you forget these places exist.

Great video post. Beautiful home. And so refreshing to listen to a couple who clearly enjoy the building and appreciate both the quirks and strengths. Nice also to listen to someone people talk about a building not using hushed, art-school language....

The house wasn’t expensive, it was about $700,000 (which is very reasonable for being in the capital of California). I toured it when it was for sale.

Lovely home that's been beautifully preserved but OY VEYYYYYY IS IT DARK!!! And that spiral staircase being the only way to the front doors is a reeeeeeeally "unique" feature that makes it non-functional.
